iPhone OS 4.0 keynote - The highlights

Apple gave the world it's frist taste of the next generation of the iPhone OS, here are the highlights.

If you missed it, do yourself a favor and watch the rebroadcast of yesterday's iPhone OS 4.0 media event. You can watch via a Web stream or download it for offline viewing on your iDevices as a podcast. If you don't have an hour to spare, you can zip through Steve's slide deck by skimming liveblogs of the event from CNet and Engadget, or check out Gizmodo's piece on iPhone 4.0's best new features. iLounge has posted a transcript of the event including the question and answer session with journalists that followed the event (which isn't included in the Apple video).

Some highlights include:

  • 450,000 iPads sold to date "can't make enough of them"
  • 600,000 iBooks downloaded
  • 3.5M iPad apps downloaded
  • 4B apps downloaded
  • 185,000 apps available (3,500 iPad apps)
  • 50 million iPhones sold, 35 million iPod touches sold, for total of 85 million. "A plum market for developers for go after"
  • The multitasking interface
  • Pandora's revelation that 26 percent (a cool 13 million) of its users listen from the iPhone
  • The concept iAds that Apple created for Nike and Target
  • A couple of apps that I had to pause and immediately download including
