MBP-3-4-weeks.jpgThe roller coaster ride of Apple ship dates keeps on rolling. Yesterday I posted a note about a new third configuration of the MacBook Pro that Apple was offering on the high end - a previously unannounced 2.16GHz model.

When a sharp PowerPage reader noted that the new 2.16GHz MacBook Pro was being quoted as shipping in "1-3 days" from the Apple online store I rushed to place my order. Sure enough the confirmation page and the online order status page indicated that my new super-zippy 2.16GHz Mac Book Pro is "Estimated (to) Ship By" March 16th. I had jumped to the front of the line.

Until I got the phone call yesterday afternoon from Apple.

According to the polite representative on the phone Apple had made an error on the Web site "for two hours" Tuesday. According to the rep, Apple accidentally posted the new 2.16GHz MacBook Pro with the default shipping time for most items (1-3 days). The rep gave me the bad news, the actual ship time for the 2.16GHz MacBook Pro was 3-4 weeks.

I find it odd that they send me an email saying that "this week Apple will begin shipping the new 15.4-inch MacBook Pro" and then in the second paragraph they say "We anticipate shipping your upgraded order by February 28, 2006." Granted it's a slight speed bump so I shouldn't complain, but c'mon guys, a spade's a spade.

Apple seems to be falling back to their old ways of not being able to deliver PowerBooks on time. Perhaps there are issues with the new machines (they are, after all, version 1.0), or maybe the chips are constrained. I only hope that Apple's under-promising and over-delivering on the dates.

  • Moral of the story?

Cheaters never prosper. If you weren't trying to cut in line you
would receive the MacBook you originally ordered in a few days. But
since you insist on trying to screw the rest of us....well, you deserve
what you get...when you get it.
