There has been plenty of speculation as to when Apple will upgrade MacBooks and MacBook Pros from the Intel Core Duo (code-named "Yonah") chips to the faster and cooler Merom (a.k.a. Core 2 Duo) processors.

Initially I heard that Merom was on tap to land in MacBook Pros in time for the holidays - late October or early November. Then last week, DigiTimes reported that the new chip was imminent and that it was expected to turn up in MacBook Pros and MacBooks in September.

Sources at PC and notebook component makers indicated that Apple will launch its MacBook laptops using Intel's new 64-bit Merom CPU in September, with associated OEM makers, such as Asustek and Quanta Computer, expected to benefit from that, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

I've heard that September 1 is when the manufacturers will be ready to start stamping the new logic boards - not the delivery date of finished machines. A source tells me that MeromBooks will be entering the manufacturing phase in early September and that they could be announced in the October - November time frame.

It is also believed that there's a good deal of inventory of existing Core Duo MacBook and MacBook Pros in the channel so Apple would be wise to sell that down before announcing the new models. I'm sticking with my original prediction that we won't see Merom until October or November.

(Keep in mind that MacBooks are not upgradeable to Merom because they don't have socketed interfaces. iMacs and Mac minis are Merom upgradeable - but it will void your warranty.)

Are you going to buy a first generation Merom MacBook from Apple?

  • I will definitely be one of the first in line ...

I'm getting one as soon as it's released.

Just looking at apple-history.com and the updates for iBooks seem to follow a pattern of May and October/Novermber refreshes. Need a MacBook for Uni and will be well pi**ed off if I buy one and have a newer, faster, cooler chip around the corner.
Might buy a cheap iMac to tide me over in the meantime.

  • Price Discounts

I have seen some $150 price discounts on the MAC annd this often preceeds new models.

  • Still not biting

I can't see buying an Intel Mac until Adobe gets their act together and issues a native version of Creative Suite.

I'm also still kind of waiting to see some big development that's more compelling than just a speed bump. Yes, it's great that the Intel chips are much faster than what IBM/Motorola could provide, but for my usage, the speed has never been that big of a factor. Give me a new form factor, a new paradigm, something to get excited about and I might buy in earlier than I'm planning to.

i am going to buy either a macbook or macbook pro solely for the use of Logic Pro. can someone help me please. i am not bothered by the screen size, the graphichs, but solely on the speed so that i can work live in a studio as well as at home producing music.
if i go for the macbook with the 2GHz, should i upgrade the RAM or anything else so that i can run Logic, ableton etc

any help from music producers and djs would be greatly appreciated
