More on the Microsoft Office 2008 12.0.1 update
My co-hort David mentioned yesterday Microsoft's Mac BU just released the Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update which contains suite-wide stability, security and performance improvements.

I've been having some weird issues with Office 2008 for Mac since it came out. Including:

  • Certain documents crash Excel 2008 every time I print when they are opened from a Windows 2003 Small Business Server.
  • Excel 2008 will sometimes say "document not saved" when I try to save it. (see attached)

I've lost many hours of work to these pesky Excel 2008 bugs because I forgot to save my document before printing it. I'm happy to report that the Office 12.0.1 update appears to have squashed my particular Excel crash on print bug. (I emphasize appears because it's only been about four hours and I've only tested some of my files.) Unfortunately, the crash on print bug persists.

According to Microsoft's download page the 114MB update fixes critical issues in Office 2008, including issues that might cause Office 2008 applications to stop responding or quit unexpectedly. It sure does.

Microsoft's knowledge base article 948057 offers a few more details:

The Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update contains several changes that improve security, stability, and performance. These changes include fixes for users of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and include fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.

Apple should take a page out of Microsoft's book on bug fix reporting and instead of telling us that a particular update "improves stability" or something suitably vague, actually tell us what it fixes! Imagine that...
