Rumor Mill: iPhone 5, 7-inch iPad, iPods and bumpers

By | August 5, 2010, 9:07am PDT

Summary: Now that the iPhone 4 and new iMacs are out we turn our attention to a couple of mouth-watering rumors about new hardware in Apple’s pipeline.

Now that the iPhone 4 and new iMacs are out, Apple hardware rumors have slowed down to a trickle — until yesterday, that is. iLounge posted a great piece with a couple of mouth-watering rumors about new Apple hardware in the pipeline — oh happy day!

Let’s jump right into it, shall we?

iPhone 5 - Not much meat on this one, but the word is that Apple is pushing up the release date of the fifth-generation iPhone to “early 2011.” Translation: as soon as January. The reason is believed to be because of the antenna issues with the iPhone 4.

It’s unknown whether this will be a repackaging of iPhone 4 components in a different shell or something more substantial.

iPad mini - This one is pretty simple: a smaller version of the iPad. According to iLounge, a seven-inch iPad is “substantially finished” and could arrive as soon as later this year or early in 2011.

Apple has been prototyping devices with screens of this size for a long time—quite possibly predating the original iPhone.

iPods - Remember these? Apple sure does. Three new iPods could drop as early as this month, or as late as September. Expect a new nano, iPod touch and a question mark, which could be a small (1.7”) touchscreen replacement for the iPod shuffle.

There’s also continued chatter about a three-inch touchscreen that could make its way into an iPod, shaving half an inch off the diagonal of the current iPod touch.

Bumper cases - Apple is believed to be developing a cheaper, all-silicone version of its bumper case to give away after September. No surprises there, now that it is giving them away free with every iPhone 4.

Our source says that the original, unreleased version of Bumper had more hard plastic than the final version, and claims that Apple was considering giving Bumpers away with every iPhone 4 before deciding to take its chances with the bare device. The question is whether the Bumpers were originally intended for glass protection or antenna coverage, and why Apple developed them in the first place.

Wonder if Apple will give any incentives to iPhone 4 uses to get the "iPhone 5". Maybe $25 off. happy
@Gis Bun

Yes - I expect that Apple would offer an incentive to iPhone 4 users to give up the iPhone 4 - since the customer satisfaction rate is the highest ever for an iPhone.

Who would change over otherwise from their favourite phone to a new one so soon after they purchased it.

Next car companies will be offering a discount to car purchasers to upgrade from this years model to next years model because the fuel gauge reads 6 bars when it should read 5, and because if the user drives it a certain way it uses more fuel. They'd better rush out a new model and offer $1000 off for that!!! After all emptying the fuel tank results in being stranded, and having to use your mobile.
I wonder if the smaller screen will drop that ridicules price down on those i pad's.
The iPod Touch rumors are probably correct. The phone has a nice camera now and adding that to the Touch would help Apple move into the point and shoot market -- as long as the camera is competitive. And with the Touch's ability to do email, video, music and the Internet, it could be quite competitive in that space.i like this idea, and i like watching movies, i have changed all my dvd to my ipad with aneesoft apps, a small alternative could be a better way to watching movies from the things in your pocket
David Freer (VP, Symantec Consumer Business Units - Norton, APJ) is a BIG LIAR! He lied to me for more than two and half years for my true feelings, time, and money. Also kept saying I am the only one in his life. Even this year on Feb. 2, he used company line to lead me to have phone sex with him. Until I found out there?s some other woman, he made up another lie and finally admitted he?s been living with her for a year. Later, I realized they were all lies. He actually has married March 2009. And now he just totally disappeared and not answering any phone calls, acting like ?hit & run? irresponsible baby. Can you trust someone like this, with no ethics and integrity? The more unbelievable things are David Freer newly-wed wife - SUZY WALSHAM, she shamefully admitted she was the third person who broke up David Freer & his ex 12 years relationships, and mocking at me as the 3rd "unsuspected" person, as she agreed with his husband?s behaviors!!!!!! SHAME ON both of you, DAVID FREER & SUZY WALSHAM!!!!!!! (THEY BOTH WORK FOR SYMANTEC)

As I have reported to Symantec Ethics about David Freer?s (VP, Symantec ? Norton, APJ) misconducts (fraud, having dissented sex with me as he lied, using company resources for personal benefits ? hundreds hours phone calls, hanging out with me during office hours, negative impacts on Symantec corporate image), what they do surprise me too. They basically ignore ? never process the investigation, covering the serial lying & cheating criminal up, then threaten me. As Warren Buffet said when he decides which company is worth to invest, he values the CEO?s ethic and integrity the most. Being a senior management, David Freer shall walk the talks, instead he has set up a terrible example. How dare Symantec always campaign the company itself as defeat cyber criminals, but in the real world, Symantec acts just like robbers, mafia, & criminals. How ironic!

Why would you want a smaller iPad...
mattmuir 6th Aug 2010
Think back to when you first saw one. My, and most of my colleagues reaction was "Gee - it's small!".
iPhone 5 won't happen. September will see thee current iPhone re-released as the iPhone 4a (a for antenna!), and it will have a bigger black line between segments, large enough to stop conductivity via the skin. A screen only iPod wouldn't surprise - a micro Touch, probably with the play bar similar to when you enter the multi-tasking bar on iOS4 and swipe left to right....

And I'm sorry, but when should an all silicone bumper be news?

@mattmuir

And just how many megaohms is the skin resistance across that gap now?

At microwave frequencies you can induce potential differences in metal at a distance.

Put a fork in a microwave and watch the sparks between the fork and itself, resistance close to 0 through the metal - and shorting effect by the metal? not at all!!! The air is a shorter path than through the metal.

I had an issue with power supplies for gas lasers a few years ago, the transformers were poorly insulated between layers, so within the one wire the potential difference was so high they would arc through the coating to further along the same wire.

The skin to metal gap is largely irrelevant to the signal, and the existing gap would give a massive resistance with human skin anyway.

This whole issue is such a joke when you look at the physics. All of the bloggers attacking Apple are talking like this is some sort of high voltage DC issue - which is complete rubbish.

At high frequency the world is not as the Hate bloggers understand it at all.

So would a larger gap actually make any difference?

I personally don't want a smaller iPad. The size of the ipad right now is perfect. And with my favorite iPad Case, the ZooGue Case because it is fully adjustable. I love watching movies in bed. here is thier site http://www.ZooGue.com

iPad: why not larger instead?
Herrie 8th Aug 2010
The current iPad series is just too small. This week I went out to buy myself an iPad, but I was disappointed by the small size of the device. It's just like a big iPhone. If they had made it the size of a regular magazine, I would have bought it instantly.

Problems certainly are a part of to get human. Appeal your issues for what there're: cherished existence lessons which could only be uncovered the complicated way. Except it will be a lethal error, which, at nfljerseys the least, other folks could be taught from.
