The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is examining an 18-year-old's motives after they posted a fake report on CNN's iReport.com on 3 October 2008 that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had suffered a heart attack, according to Bloomberg.

The report briefly sent Apple shares down 5.4 percent (or about US$4.8 billion) before an Apple spokesman stated that it wasn't true. According to two Bloomberg sources investigators haven't found evidence that the teen was trying to profit by driving down Apple stock.

  • We cannot even joke!

This highlights the problems caused by greedy wallstreet crooks and cons. We cannot even joke!

Why would you even want to joke about something like that?

      • Because...

of the reaction that it receives. The fact that a joke like that will cause the news to report with out facts and wallstreet greed to panic. The "joke" or lie just shows how careless are world has become with information.

      • Seriously?

I don't know how old you are, but I really thought you were old enough to have seen piles of 18 year olds who joke about things even more serious, and in bad taste then Jobs keeling over dead.

While that level of humour may not strike the majority of having any humour in it, count on the fact that there are still large numbers who will get at least a chuckle out of the broad reaction such a story gets. Particularly the way it was placed. Used to be news services didn't even take their own rookie reporters stories seriously unless they had corroboration. Now some guy playing silly bugger gets taken seriously. Ha! To much. It just made me laugh.

    • I hear ya, buddy

It used to be hilarious to mail unknown powder substances to people, or leave ticking packages in public places. Pfft - fat chance of having THAT kind of fun anymore...

    Your correct.
I think Wall Street is another name for Al Queda and the Taliban.
We cannot joke, fly kites or do anything a free & democratic society is allowed to do.
We have essentially lost our collective minds to the financial screw ups at Wall Street.

I think Wall Street need to check their facts before they take their financial ship into iceberg.
Rumors and other "tales" should be checked before selling Apple stock for no reason like we should have checked on George Bush's facts before we, congress and us, went to war in Iraq.
Male bovine feces is still bull sh*t no matter who says it and we, with some intellect, should check if this is roast beef or bull cr@p.
We, with some intellect, should know what is on tabloid "Star" should be taken as a joke and take advice from this form of media. This 18 year old just put cr@p on the net and Wall Street just taken this seriously without checking if this real.
If you are doing something real, get the fact first. If you are doing a fantasy, then you can joke or lie all you want. But don't mix the two.
