What doesn't interfere with your iPhone's Wifi?

Summary: A recent post at the TiPb blog runs down the many many causes of Wifi interference with your iPhone, more than the advice to hold it differently. Some of the items on the list may surprise you.

A recent post at the TiPb blog runs down the many many causes of Wifi interference with your iPhone, more than the advice to hold it differently. Some of the items on the list may surprise you.

The article talks about some of the differences between the radios and frequencies supported by different iPhone models, potential environmental problems, and a range of obscure hardware and physical barriers that may cause a problem.

Even the responses offered tips:

I had a customer who we could not get a decent signal one room over from her router, stick the USB adapter out the door and the signal was 100 percent, in the room maybe 15 percent. After much testing I came to the conclusion the walls were painted with lead based paint (built in the 50’s) and that was causing the signal drop.

I can believe this.

In urban areas, there's also the potential for users to live near power sources such as transformers that could cause interference.

I recently visited an apartment that was in the shadow of a transformer — it was on a pole right just a few feet outside the living room window — and the occupants were unaware of it. It wasn't really in their primary view and for the persons living there, this very large piece of industrial equipment just faded into the urban landscape.

  • Nothing!

I never have any of these issues (whatever your article is about, I haven't read it yet) but I will tell you my iPhone never has problems.

    • What about TiO2-based white paints? Do they "screen" the signal?

I hope that the 4s doesn't have any of the problems so I can use it in the bathroom when I am sitting on the toilet. toilet roll holder

  • What the hell does the iPhone has to do with lead paint?

Seriously, did you just throw the word iPhone in here to get hits?

Last I checked the iPhone is not responsible for the lack of quality of the paint of the property where it is used.

This article mentions iPhone ONCE in terms of interference, it reads like you were writing an article about wifi interference, got bored, then decided to put iPhone in the title to attract more hits.

You succeeded, but also succeeded in being a complete waste of journalism.

  • Change this to WIFI Interference and you'll have something...

Oh, and while we're on the subject of WIFI interference, let me add a story...

Working for a Cable ISP several years ago, I had a customer call in about issues with WIFI in only one room of the house. Even though it wasn't something supported, it piqued my interest because that sort of thing just doesn't happen.

Well, after playing the antenna location game for a while and testing out other WIFI connected computers (4 laptops along with the desktop in this room), I finally started asking about construction of the house itself. The house was built in 1984, but the room was covered in stucco. Not just spray it on, but done properly as if it were outside, which meant there was at least one layer of wire mesh somewhere in it.

Needless to say, it was probably the most interesting way to block WIFI I've ever heard of, considering I have several friends with stucco on their houses and no problems with their WIFI when I go outside.

@nix_hed Yep why the need to insert iPhone into it? I have dead spots in my house, do I need to replace my iPhone since I can't get a signal there?

I haven't seen this issue in my iPhone 4. But I have seen issues with multiple programs/games opened and whenever I make call it might break sometimes, not always though.

naw..not the paint but behind the wall was metal lathe used for real plaster walls of that era. Today they are drywall and the walls contain little or no metal other than some which use metal studs which do not much interfere but lathe metal is a Faraday box and a great shield against cell phones and other electromagnetic energy.
