Your second subsidized VZW iPhone will probably be the iPhone 6

Your second subsidized VZW iPhone will probably be the iPhone 6

Summary: If you get a Verizon iPhone on Tuesday, you won't be eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 5, but you will be eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 6 -- in September 2012.

SHARE:

In the U.S. changing mobile phone carriers isn't trivial. All four major US carriers require a two-year contract which is backed up by a hefty early termination fees of around $350. But hey, at least you can upgrade your phone at the halfway mark, right?

Not so fast plucky...

leaked slide (above) published on Android Central suggests VZW will be changing its phone upgrade program from 12 months to 20 months.

Update: VZW confirms the 20 month policy in its wireless FAQ "You are eligible redeem your New Every Two benefit after fulfilling 20 months of your two year term."

This means that if you get a VZW iPhone this Tuesday -- and Apple continues its current pace of annual iPhone releases -- you won't be eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 5 in June 2011 (that's only 5 months out), or at the launch of the iPhone 6 in June 2012 (17 months).

You'll be eligible for a subsidized iPhone again three months later, and you'll be able to finally pick up the iPhone 6 in September 2012, but at this point details of the iPhone 7 will start to trickle out and you'll probably want to hold out for that.

    Just pay the 1-year contract rate for the phone. Are you saying this won't be available?

    Anything is better than this POS Android phone I have, it is called a Galaxy S series... anyone want to buy it? I'm going back to Apple, they got it right.

      • And you're renowned for your...

        Flexibility with the truth, so it's a tad rich you plonking out the "liar" tag.

        Oh, and haven't you said your iPhone is the best phone you've had? Useless, aren't you.

        @NonZealot
        ... but just last week I observed that I had never seen you praise an Apple product without qualifying that praise with some sort of insult to Apple. You responded by praising the superior hardware of you iPhone4 and MacBook Pro. I have read in the past where you praise the iPhone4 as the best phone you've ever owned. Now you seem to be denigrating the iPhone4.

        So I wonder, were you truthful then, or are you truthful now?

      • @macadam: I believe Hasam is lying, EOS

        @NonZealot
        How is that mutually exclusive with me also thinking that the iPhone 4 was the best phone for me 6 months ago?

        Hasam has been spamming ZDNet with the same post over and over again. I do not believe that he has an Android phone. That is why I called him a liar.

        So I'm being truthful now (I do believe Hasam is lying about owning an Android phone) and I was being truthful then (6 months ago, the iPhone was the best phone for me).

        And.... this is me adding you to my ignore list.

  • For sale on 1-11-2011?

    > If you get a Verizon iPhone on Tuesday, you won?t be

    Who said they will be available *IN STORES* on 1-11-2011????

    It's an iphone "announcement" only. (And no one is certain even about that.)

      @CathyCC

      At least here in Colorado, my uncle went to the Verizon store a couple weeks ago. When he asked a Verizon salesman when they'd be getting the iPhone, the salesman was so kind as to tell my uncle that they had them stocked in the back already, but that they couldn't sell them until Verizon/Apple gave the thumbs-up.

      Now ask how good of a story teller my uncle is. I'd like to believe that Verizon already has their stores stocked, ready for the masses to wipe them out.

  • Waiting for the iPhone 4.5, 5, 6, 7, .... 12

    Why get the iPhone 4.5? Wait for the iPhone 5. Why not just wait for the iPhone 6. Ok, then just wait for the iPhone 7.

    Is ZDNET a joke, or what?

    You can *ALWAYS* wait. Why not just wait forever and get an iPhone 12?

    • Exactly

      @CathyCC
      The time to buy any new hardware is the moment where price = perceived value *to you* of the then-current hardware set.

    I love the spin -- "simplifying" seems to be a euphemism for "making it more expensive for the customer".

      Of course!
      Phones should be a commodity just like a TV! Will our Govt. fix it? H377 no. They are busy making health care the same as a cell phone!

  • This is typical.

    New-phone-every-year is far too expensive to be sustainable. 12-month contracts are as rare as rocking horse manure.

  • RE: Your second subsidized VZW iPhone will probably be the iPhone 6

    If Verizon has a 12 month policy, why is mine 20 months, and always has been? I have never understood the reasoning for a one-year phone (or laptop etc) to have a multi-year contract.
    I would rather pay full price or for an unlocked phone than pay a discount and insurance, locked into the service. Won't do it again.

  • Pricing realities

    One of the things that always seems to get overlooked in these endless parade of Verizon-is-superior articles is that their prices are "superior" too (e.g. higher). I wonder if the analysts predictions of the number of people waiting to jump ship factors in their willingness to pay 15% more for equivalent services too.

    anybody notice how damn annoying it is that this website erases everything you type when you forget your not logged in?

    @the.ksmm

    VZW is not actually 15% more then the other carriers for "equivalent" services.

    their pricing matches AT&T, only diff is one has rollover and the other has unlimited data. also, vzw offers talk+text+data plans that match or beat sprints plan(advertised in northeast area, but available nationwide to any customer that threatens to go to sprint), and unlimited talk and text plan that is 69.99 that beats T-Mobile(available in southern California) and an "unlimited to any mobile" plan that also matches sprint pricing but available with more minutes(available in most southern states and still spreading to more areas). also vzw is the ONLY major carrier that offered the ability to upgrade 12 months into your contract for those paying 59.99 for their VOICE access(combined cost of data and features do not count, so if you read this and say you can't get that benefit, thats why), or the primary line a family share plan can also get that perk.

    Actually...for most people, it will probably be an Andorid phone. But thanks for playing. You are ONE step close to finding out what Steve Jovbs' semen tastes like. (If you don't already know.)
