Akamai lost an appeal in a long-running patent infringement lawsuit with Limelight Networks.

In a statement, Limelight the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed a judgment stating that it didn't infringe on three Akamai patents.

Akamai shares fell on the news. The Akamai-Limelight scrum---initially filed in 2006---revolved around three patents related to content delivery networks. Akamai won a jury verdict for $45.5 million in 2008, but a judge tossed the result. Akamai appealed and lost.

Limelight, Akamai and other players such as Level 3 are in a dogfight for content delivery network deals.
