Android gets Kindle App; Analyst downgrades Amazon

By | June 28, 2010, 2:03pm PDT

Summary: Amazon release a Kindle App for Android. Meanwhile, a Wall Street analyst downgrades Amazon over concerns about Kindle.

Amazon said today that its has released its free Kindle reading app for Android-powered devices, furthering opening the Kindle platform to other platforms but also raising some concerns about the long-term survival of the Amazon’s Kindle e-reader.

The app, available for download in the Android Marketplace, is the latest to hit mobile devices, with Kindle apps already available for BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as Windows and Mac computers.

The Android app includes Amazon’s Whispersync technology, which saves and syncs books and bookmarks across the various devices. For now, the Kindle app is just a reader but additional features - including full text search and the ability to purchase Kindle books from within the app - will be added soon.

Separately, Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Marinanne Wolk cut her rating on Amazon, according to a post on Barron’s Tech Trader Daily blog. Why is Wolk so concerned? Among other reasons, Wolk cites the market share in e-book readers, how the recent price cut will affect profitability and the early momentum of the e-Book space in Apple’s iPad.

Yea what's the downgrade about?

My first thoughts are: Yeah, now Android has a Kindle app too...great. BUT, why is launched a day after a way better iPhone/iPAd version of the app was launched?

They are just asking for comparisons here. And the glaring omissions will not go unnoticed.

It's predicatable that they would go for the larger market of iPhone/iPad users (There was a line of thousands to buy that phone last week, cmon), but treating Android users like second class citizens will not win them any fans.

Better keep it short... More thoughts on this new app on my blog: http://ebookreader-ben.com/android-fail-kindle-app-not-as-cool-as-iphones/

I've been waiting for their app for awhile, I've downloaded free books, but I would like to try it on my Droid since I cannot download the files directly without an actual Kindle.

Amazon makes it's money on the books. If they don't have to loss lead with the reader WHILE getting a much larger audience, why wouldn't this make Amazon stronger?
