Apple iOS tops Android in reach: Will influx of tablets change the equation?

Summary: Apple's iOS has twice the reach of Android when the continuum of mobile devices---tablets, smartphones and mobile media players---are considered, according to comScore. A bevy of Android tablets may change that equation.

Apple's iOS has twice the reach of Android when the continuum of mobile devices---tablets, smartphones and mobile media players---are considered, according to comScore.

ComScore's report has a bevy on interesting details embedded in it. However, this reach calculation only serves as a notable benchmark. Since the army of Android tablets hasn't hit the market in full force yet, Apple has the field largely to itself. ComScore's data will be more interesting a few quarters from now---assuming an Android tablet can step up to the iPad plate and be competitive.

Among the key data points via comScore:

• Apple's unduplicated audience reach with its iOS---iPad, iPhone, iPod touch---is 37.9 million users. Apple's iPhone installed base only slightly tops iPod Touches.
• Of Apple's 37.9 million user audience only 4 million access iOS via more than one device.
• Apple has 16.2 percent share of mobile subscribers.
• Android's installed base is 23.8 million across smartphones and tablets---good for a 10.2 percent share of subscribers.
• RIM smartphone customers are the second highest group of iPad owners. That fact represents a challenge and opportunity for the PlayBook. The challenge is that many BlackBerry owners will compare the PlayBook to the iPad---perhaps unfavorably. The good news is that more than 11 percent of BlackBerry owners haven't gone with the iPad. Those users are potential PlayBook owners.

And the demographic look at iPad owners.

• RE: Apple iOS tops Android in reach

But wait - this cannot be true! Android is beating iOS, all the Linux Heads and Microsoft Fanboys say so!

Okay all sarcasm aside this does prove the point I've been trying to make to all of the Android Army trolls... But if a manufacturer can bring a viable, cheaper, and better specced tablet to the market iOS's hold might be in trouble. For now since there is not a cheaper tablet in the wild I think iOS will be okay for a while.

@athynz android is beating iOS in the smart phone category... its when you start adding ipods and ipads into the mix that iOS takes the lead... but yes I agree with your statement that for now iOS is probably safe, until someone comes out with an ipad killer... which shouldnt be that hard, the ipad is a giant glorified ipod touch anyway

Do you know this from experience or from pulling out of your a$$. I have replaced my laptop with an ipad2 and love it. My phone is a Samsung MM300 freebie and works for calls & texting.

@nickdangerthirdi@... What Apple needs to learn is that they need to hire astroturfers like Google does to spam all the articles on the internet about iOS. Googles done a really good job hiring people to spread FUD.

• "android is beating iOS in the smart phone category..."

@nickdangerthirdi@... : Is it really? Can you name one single brand of Android phone that's even close to the iPhone in sales and user base? Can you name one single version of Android OS that has the same penetration as iOS 4.x?

You see, you have a problem with Android and one of those problems is why Apple is currently suing Samsung--there are many different versions and they have to be careful not to look and 'feel' like the iPhone due to Apple's patents. Apple is not about to let what happened to the Mac OS happen to iOS--Apple thought that having copyrights on the appearance of the OS would protect it; the courts proved them wrong. Patents are much more strongly protected than copyrights. So while Android as an overall platform is beating iOS on smart phones, no one version--no one manufacturer--is doing as well. Yet.

• Android's growth rate, spectacular!

@nickdangerthirdi@... Exactly, it doesn't make sense to include iPods in this comparison because Android is not in that market. To just generalize as one big "mobile" market is irrelevant.

Besides the bigger issue is one of rate of adoption in the last 12 months compared to now. iOS has about a 3 year lead in the market compared to Android.

Android's growth has been spectacular!

• iOS market penetration is not Apples to Apples, Pun intended.

@nickdangerthirdi@...

<i>"until someone comes out with an ipad killer... which shouldnt be that hard,"</i>

Well evidentially it is difficult enough, since so far a comparable size tablet running Android has yet to beat Apple on Price. They have matched Apple on price, but have yet to beat it.

<i>"the ipad is a giant glorified ipod touch anyway"</i>

Following that logic, so is the iPad clones such as Xoom and Tab. And that doesn't make it a bad or shoddy product even if it is just and overgrown iPod, because what is the experience geared toward? Multimedia and content consumption.

Ultimately, it will come down to sheer numbers. Android is put on multiple phone models from multiple manufacturers. Eventually yes it is all matter of time before Android is the Windows of the Mobile space. Remember, Apple's iOS only goes on Apple's Hardware, which means market penetration has to be compared on two facets. One the OS penetration, and two, the Hardware Penetration, which I would suspect could exceed some of the other handset makers.

@nickdangerthirdi and Mrxxxman
No, android is NOT beating iOS in the smart phone category. As I have repeatedly asked, please name a single carrier ANYWHERE on the planet, that has carried both devices, where the iPhone does not beat the number of Android devices from ALL manufacturers, COMBINED.

All right,
1st - tell me, how do you update your iPad if it has replaced your laptop?

2nd - if it has replaced your laptop you were a seriously light user - a crippled netbook would have worked for you.

I'm not picking on you or doubting what you claim, I feel it is idiots like you who make statements that can't hold water.

A big chunk of the Android market is very cheap phones and Apple is not in that market so based on your above statement we should deduct those from the overall figures when comparing to the iPhone right?

Besides the bigger issue is one of rate of adoption in the last 12 months compared to now. iOS has about a 3 year lead in the market compared to Android.
This lie again. I will give you that Android's growth since late 2009 has been spectacular but as has been point out to you more than a few times, iPhone has less than a 18 month lead on Android, not 3 years.

• RE: Apple iOS tops Android in reach: Will influx of tablets change the equation?

@Feds Against Guns ... the reason no one brand can compete with the iPhone is because there are so many different companies that are competing with it in the same way.

Nice try but wrong. If there was one manufacturer that produced one device or a whole line that was more popular that the rest of the Android devices and/or the iPhone then it certainly could compete with the iPhone. The fact of the matter is that not one device or manufacturer has been able to compete because none of them have been able to set themselves apart from the crowd like the iPhone has been able to.

Where did he state that he doesn't have a desktop which he syncs to? He only stated that it replaced his laptop which apparently was his mobile device but not necessarily his only device.

2nd - if it has replaced your laptop you were a seriously light user - a crippled netbook would have worked for you.
Where did he state that a netbook wouldn't have worked for him? Where is it said that if a netbook can do what you need you have to use one? This was his portable device and you have no idea how he uses it. Maybe he does all the horse power work on a desktop and only used the laptop for email, web surfing and the occasional movie.

@athynz <br>What makes me laugh is they never say which version of Android is beating iOS. They better be careful or that sneaky WP7SOS might take marketshare away from their particular favorite flavor of Android.

Then they have to stop counting iPod Touches and iPhones with previous versions of that software, too. And you know there are plenty out there.

• RE: Apple iOS tops Android in reach: Will influx of tablets change the equation?

@Droid101
No they absolutely do not, which is the WHOLE point of this post, anyway.

When looking at these numbers, you view iOS as a whole because that means you have [total] of devices on which to market an iOS app to. Remember, this is one OS across these devices to which you can market an app.
lelandhendrix
• @Droid101

@Droid101 Okay let's count them - how many iPhones are running iOS 4.3x (the latest iOS version as of this post) vs how many Android smartphones are running Android OS 3x? I'm certain that there are more iPhones running iOS 4.2x than there are Android smartphones running Android OS 3x. I have NO proof of this other than that there are NO stock Android smartphones running Android OS 3x.

As for tablets running the latest OS - iPad2 came with iOS 4.2x and has outsold the Xoom which came with Android 3x.

Any other questions or is your drive by trolling attempt at FUD fully shot down?

Should we keep on going with this?
athynz
• Tablet OS

@athynz
I sure hope there aren't many phones running Android 3.x since it's a tablet OS and Google has held back from releasing it specifically because it shouldn't be on phones in its current state. I think you don't know enough about iOS vs. Android to be comparing the two.
daengbo
• Who gives a toss about the price?

@athynz
Price means nothing without considering value. So what if the iPad is doing a good job??? I have access to one daily and it lies in a drwaer as it is of no interest to me at work; secure app equals more passwords equals PITA and I cant be bothered. Great consumer device BUT i want to slip movies in; on an SD card. Cant do that so... for me.... Much prefer Playbook size and portability for work roles; really looking forward to the Acer Transormer for home use. HDMI, SD, USB..... there is simply NO value comparison to the ipad in my mind. SO.. when it hits the market I am keen that the transformer delivers close to what it claims. If so I will spend MY money and get a device I want rather than a tied down iPad for free. Thats my value equation. Whats yours?
johnmckay
• Where to begin?

@GetReal-mac.com If you want to buy something different than an iPad more power to you... Just be wary of the Acer Transformer - Acer's track record as far as reliability has not been too good lately. The PlayBook seems interesting - although I'd wait and see what the next gen version or next major BB OS update for it has in store... I'm a bit leery of it as it does not come with email capability right out of the box.

As for "slipping" movies on an iPad - you do know that you can sync the iPad (or iPhone in my case) to any computer running iTunes (or alternate software) and put the movie on the device, right? It just takes proper planning. If you want something that you can use an SD card with then why did you buy the iPad to begin with? There are IMHO too many questions I have with your post for me to believe that you actually own an iPad. And what is this secure app equals more passwords equals PITA and I cant be bothered. supposed to mean?

I do not own an iPad - but if someone gave me one for free you'd better believe that I'd find a way to work with it and use it - hell that (hypothetically) saved me at least $400 bucks... THAT is my value equation.
