Apple's word of mouth challenge: Will Consumer Reports hamper iPhone 4's mojo?

By | July 12, 2010, 2:38pm PDT

Summary: The iPhone 4’s thumbs down from Consumer Reports is a major blow. Hopefully, Apple will recognize the significance of it and start working to fix not only the antenna problem but also its lack-of-response to it.

It’s one thing for a blogger like me to go on these rants about the shortcomings of the iPhone 4. But when Consumer Reports, which has the power to drive or halt buying decisions with its recommendations, announces that it cannot recommend the iPhone 4 because of the device’s antenna issues, it carries a lot of weight with mainstream consumers.

Hardcore iPhone fans can try as much as they’d like to discredit the Consumer Reports findings - and some are already doing just that - but they’ll have a hard time convincing mainstream consumers that CR is turning this into something more than it is. After all, this isn’t just some thumbs-down from a tech blogger who had a bad experience with the iPhone. This is Consumer Reports - and that matters.

Yes, sales of the iPhone 4 were strong right out of the gate - but it’s important to note that 77 percent of those initial sales were upgrades by existing iPhone owners. And many of those folks were likely early-adopter Apple fans who probably would have bought the phone even if it only handled smoke-signal communications. After all, dropped calls are no big deal when your friends see you carrying around the latest cool gadget, right?

But what about everyone else, the regular folks who don’t place pre-orders or spend the night outside Apple stores, those who care about the quality of the service and refuse to pay even more money to fix a problem that should have been addressed before the product was sold in the first place? Many of those people are the same ones that will take their time researching and comparing products - starting with what Consumer Reports had to say. The magazine has a stellar reputation of testing products and for some, the magazine’s word is gospel. Its ratings and rankings can spread like word-of-mouth wildfire among mainstream consumers.

But this isn’t just CR running some tests on a new device. This is also about CR challenging Apple’s response and explanation of the antenna issue. From the CR post:

Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4’s signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that “mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength.” The tests also indicate that AT&T’s network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4’s much-reported signal woes.

Apple tends to take a no-response position when the criticisms surface. That’s just the Apple way of doing things. But the company may not be able to ignore this one. The CR report dominated headlines today - and not just on Techmeme and other tech blogs. The CR news went mainstream, which means that those non-techie customers who may have been on the fence have now been influenced. The on-air hosts on Bloomberg television even went so far as to compare it to the Toyota debacle. Ouch. And many of you thought my comparison of the device to Windows Vista last week was brutal.

What’s funny, though, is that Consumer Reports wants to give the iPhone 4 a glowing recommendation. It was practically giddy about other new features on the device - but just couldn’t get past the antenna issue. If I’m a consumer doing some research, the fact that CR likes the device so much but still can’t recommend it speaks volumes more than just a thumbs-down.

Consumer Reports seems willing to recommend the iPhone 4 later (that’s how well-liked it was) but “Apple needs to come up with a permanent—and free—fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4.”

So the ball is back in Apple’s court. Instead of selling consumers a $30 case to “fix” the problem, maybe iPhone 4 should be repackaged to include a case, along with a warning that failure to use the case could result in a poor signal for the phone. Maybe it should invite iPhone 4 owners in for a free case or issue refunds to those who’ve already purchased them.

Better yet, maybe it’s time for a product recall so Apple can start righting the wrongs that have come from this hardware design problem.

Apple needs to step up and start making some fixes soon - and not just the antenna issues on the iPhone 4 but some perception issues, as well.  Otherwise, all of this inaction by Apple - as well as the CR snub - will likely make its way into legal documents as part of lawsuits already being filed.

This is all smoke screens and mirrors. The only dropped calls I have gotten are from EVO users to keep it real. The antenna works seamlessly. People and engineers looking to fill their pockets and who do not own iPhones need to stop. Apple did an awesome job on this phone and truth be told, Apple always bounces back with any initial phone problems including a promised software update and a full refund for the first time. On top of that, I have a neighbor who is livid regarding how the EVO lacks in getting to the Internet or on YouTube as fast as the iPhone. Apple has never been without controversy and this too shall pass.

@Economister And no matter how much Apple fan boys would like this to be a non issue. It is.

Deal is Apple is loosing on all fronts, lets take a look.

- By Jan 2011 or sooner Android will have more Apps
- The most advance Apps (Swype / Gesture Control / Fring, Google Navigation, Google Wave, Google Translation / App Inventor, etc) work on Android
- Android has now more features than Apple
- More phones
- More providers
- Android phones have better technical specs than iPhones do.

The only item left that Apple fans can brag about, Apple has a better experience and foolish fragmentation ( a non issue, when a G1 runs Froyo). Gingerbread will take care of that.

By Jan 2011, Android phones will be running dual core 1.5Mhz to 2Mhz phones while the 4G is still going to be a 0.8Mhz phone.

Lol, like the cartoon said, Android can make money the iPhone come back shall be.. been blind... "I don't care!"

Deal is we wont either!
@Economister What's the matter, don't like it when someone has a positive experience with iPhone 4?
@athynz
Sound like happy Vista users. No matter how many were happy with vista, the stigma persisted. iphone 4 = the new vista. And I love how there are new issues every week to help keep this true.

Amazing the power of heavy emotional investment
OS Reload Updated - 12th Jul 2010
@cs2010

Emotional investment has the power to completely obliterate reality and turn your world upside down.

The only thing puzzling me is this: What on Earth is giving that gizmo such tremendous power? Can, by any chance, be it's peculiar antenna configuration?

Anyway, something is doing that, this is a case to be studied in fine detail by the best minds in both tech and psychiatry. Very very interesting!

Special coating on the outside - perhaps halides?
Patanjali Updated - 12th Jul 2010

"Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual`s power to resist domination, by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain, thus making him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him. [A convenient light lobotomy]. (From a conspiracy theory mag, Nexus.)

Nazis and Russia both advocated flouridation for mass mind control.

Bromine was given to WW1 troops to quell libido.

Halides do some strange things to one's will. Perhaps Apple has a novel application for them!

Fluoridization
vulpine@... 13th Jul 2010
@Patanjali: So that's why world governments are forcing fluorides into their peoples' water! Did you know the US is one of the biggest proponents of this practice? They claim it's for tooth health, but from what I've read, it makes teeth weaker rather than stronger.

@cs2010

EVO is only slower because 4G probably isn't in his area yet... Now when it rolls out there he'll be surfing circles around your AT&T connection and with FROYO even his current connection will smoke yours for web browsing.

As for Consumer Reports, they test the phones themself and if they say there really is an issue thent here really is an issue and they actually tested something like 10 other AT&T phones but none of the others had the reception issues that the iPhone 4 have had!

@Peter Perry

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, 4G is 4th gen, not necessarily something better or faster than 3G. Kind of like HD Radio doesn't stand for High Def, but it is a great buzzword.
@Peter Perry
You've got to admit that's a fair test. But both 3G networks use different technologies and at&t 3G out specs verizion and Sprint 3G capibility. I'm getting almost 4meg/sec downloads and at that point it's faster than my t1. Kinda funny you have to hold the evo for the display to work correctly.

CR is a god or fallible (????)
oterrya 13th Jul 2010
@Peter Perry

Consumer Reports (CR) has such a following that, unfortunately, if they say say a problem exists, there is a problem even if they are wrong -- and they are occasionally wrong.

Some years ago, they gave a new variety of a product from a high end manufacturer a "do not buy" recommendation. I managed to get one before the manufacturer pulled the plug on the product. Not only were they wrong about the specifics, they were wrong about the durability of the product. Times have changed, but the product is still performing perfectly as advertised. This is not an isolated case -- there are hundreds of these across the country.

I am not commenting on the validity of their statements on the iPhone 4, but merely pointing out that CR is not perfect. Their reviewers are humans also and may (insert expression of horror) make mistakes like the rest of us. The message is that you should take their report as another bit of information when you are doing your own evaluation of the product. (Unless, of course, you are a lemming -- then you are following whomever you perceive as tooting the loudest.)

Of course, nobody commenting here is in error. Not even those with arguments so far out they are off-planet nor those whose spelling and grammar are so bad that you cannot figure out what they have said after you have read it.

iPhone 4 vs 4G...
Wolfie2K3 13th Jul 2010
@G8rsFan
Generally, 4G is reserved for the particular radios used in Sprint 4G cellular service. It IS a standard and it IS faster than 3G. Currently, as of this writing, it's not completely rolled out nationwide. But they're working on it.

When you're referring to the iPhone 4, it is, indeed the 4th generation - but it doesn't have the moniker 4G. It's just the iPhone 4. Period. Full Stop. No G at the end. Some people mistakenly add the G because the previous 2 incarnations of the iPhone (the iPhone 3G and 3GS) both had a G in their name.
@G8rsFan Be sure you know which "generation" you mean. 4G in the telecom sense does absolutely mean faster. In fact, that's all it means -- its a metric for all-IP wireless with a peak download speed of at least 100Mb/s. WiMax, as in the EVO 4G, is one suggested 4G technology. Most carriers will be using LTE instead. Neither is yet certified as meeting the 4G specs in practice (set by the ITU). Both are faster than any of the 3G specs, at similar power levels.

The new iPhone is called the "4", not the 4G. However it, too, is potentially faster. Older iPhones do not implement full 3G uploads -- they max out at 384kb/s. The iPhone 4 does full HSUPA+ uploads, up to about 2Mb/s. Otherwise, it is like the 3GS... and that's assuming no software or antenna issues in th way.

@DonRupertBitByte There is a problem, but I haven't seen valid data on it yet.

The CR test is flawed. I don't doubt that what they said happened really happened, though. I'll just make sure that wherever I move doesn't involve me spending my day in a cage, and certainly not a reflective chamber!

John Zern 13th Jul 2010
so what's your point athynz?

It sounds just like you when you carry on and on about some insignificant issue with Windows.

Unfortunatelly, a phone that can't make calls isn't what I would label "insignificant".

It actually belongs on an island next to the Charlie in the box, The train with square wheels, and and an ostrich riding cowboy.
@athynz
payback is a female pooch.
@athynz are you and @cs2010 really that delusional? This is CONSUMER REPORTS. They have been doing this much longer than Apple/MSFT/Google have been around combined. They know what they are talking about. They are unbiased and test devices themselves. You apple lovers are starting to sound like you are screaming the sky is hot pink and the grass is hot orange and truly believe that arguing it until you are blue in the face. Lay off the kool-aid and face reality.
@John Zern I don't hate Microsoft or Windows... I'm running Windows 7 on my HP laptop right now and I really like Windows 7 - you won't ever see me go on about an insignificant issue with Windows... I've ranted about Vista and that was from my own personal experience with it, XP, and 7... but by all means go and find a post where I did carry on about an insignificant Microsoft issue - I'll wait.

Unfortunatelly, a phone that can't make calls isn't what I would label "insignificant".

I agree - IF the iPhone 4 could not make a phone call I'd be on the forefront of calling Apple out over it. IF the majority of the iPhone 4's had this issue then yeah I'd be here calling them out. IF I had an iPhone 4 with this issue and Apple would not exchange it for another unit or if the new unit had the same issues hell yes I'd be pissed and you'd be hearing about it here... but none of the above has happened. There are more Apple Haters commenting about it than there are actual iPhone 4 customers with the issue.
@topgun966

The reality of the situation is that the majority of the people who have commented on ZDNet and other forums are Apple haters rather than the actual iPhone owners who have this issue. The reality is that many iPhone owners are unable to replicate the issue. The reality is that Consumer Reports also said that the iPhone 4 is one of the top smartphones. Now I will say that CR weighing in on this issue does tend to legitimize it a bit more than the ZDNet bloggers and Apple Haters and I did not every say this was not an issue but I am saying that it is not as widespread as the Apple Haters claim.

Actually the ones who's doing the screaming that the sky is hot pink are not Apple fans. I don't think anyone is denying some are having issue with the iPhone, but lets not deny the extra over-the-top fud that's being spread around here because of it. At least that's what I am responding to.

We are a 4 iPhone family, 2 new iPhone 4s and 2 hand-me-down 3GS. The iPhone 4 is visually faster, is 802.11n instead of g, and unlike a Verizon Droid, it can still be used as a computer while making a phone call.
I use the iPhone to access customer records on the office database while on a sales call, something the Droid cannot do according to Verizon, unless you are connected via WiFi. Personally that is a deal-breaker for me. To be fair, it is the CDMA that is the problem...BUT...it also makes traveling internationally with the Verizon Droid awful...the iPhone pretty much works wherever I go.
I have not had any dropped call issues caused by handling the iPhone 3 or 4, as I use a Bluetooth headset, the Jawbone ICON, to be specific, and the phone sits in either a car cradle or on my belt.
The iPhone, using iOS4 is very nice and very stable in operation. The operational differences between this and the Droid are very much Mac vs. Windows. The Apple product is simply more polished and operationally reliable, for exactly the same reasons Macs have always been more polished and reliable than PCs... Simply because Apple does not have to technically support a wide number of hardware vendors, and/or software frameworks. The more permutations you add to any product the less reliable it will be, and the converse is certainly true.
A good example is that I have yet to deal with seriously shortened battery life when multitasking on the iPhone 3 or 4 using iOS 4...because Apple took their time and legislated the code to prevent such a user unfriendly and unexpected occurrence. They make developers use only Apple or Apple-approved frameworks to control such issues. I appreciate that, others complain about lack of openness. I argue openness is greatly overrated, be careful what you wish for.
Stories of the competition multitasking and draining batteries literally in minutes with certain app combinations are all over the web, along with associated solutions. Personally, I don't want any situation that can kill MY PHONE in favor free-for-all openness and running a random bunch of apps.
The camera in the iPhone is really great, so is the HD recording...the display is awesome and the video conferencing is slick and seamless. It is so cool to make a call, using cell minutes, then seeing that the other caller has an iPhone 4, hit the Facetime button, and continue the call in video FOR FREE! No cell minutes as it hangs up the cell call seamlessly....saves a TON of money when traveling internationally.
I do think Consumer Reports will have some effect on the mainstream customer who knows nobody who is personally happy with an iPhone 4. There is room for both products in the market, and competition is healthy for all...personally, I will choose Apple products for the constant innovation and visionary design, and mostly because I am pleased with the performance and reliability I experience on a daily basis.

Personally, I would like to see how many of the people commenting actually own an iPhone, or have experienced the product over a length of time.
@Kevin Doyle
And, your long (too long) rambling will not stop this POS from being labeled a dud. That is what it is!
@Kevin Doyle

From the top.
Got a 3G. Had connection issues. Apple rolled out a minor update - improved but still not great. Liked it enough to stick with it.

Got a 3GS. Better all round than the 3G. Faster, more stable, call quality marginally improved. Went back to carrying another phone (Epix) when I traveled to make sure I could always call. Eventually upgraded to iOS4 - holy crappola!!! I wish I could roll back to 3. Buggy. The folks at the "genius" bar told me - "we are aware of the issues. an update will be rolled out soon".

Too painful. Went shopping for another device.

present day..... out comes the 4. Will wait till post crush. Want a white model anyway.
Neighbor and a couple of friends got the 4. Started playing. Found numerous issues. Most had a proximity sensor issue, a couple had yellow spots, we could replicate the antenna problem in all 3 phones. Interesting. (btw: one has already cracked the glass on his, bumper doesn;t help that).

Tried a buddy's EVO - sweet!!!! unfortunately I like/need AT&T (don't ask - rollover I luv).

Looked at and tried the Nexus One.
Compared to neighbors i4. Excepting the display, the N1 wins. Even the display is not that far off and after a while you start asking yourself why Apple stayed with the small screen. idk.

Bought the Nexus One.
After a couple of days, I don't miss the iPhone at all and the call quality? Much Improved Compadre!

So, over 2+ years, two models of the iPhone.
I now ask myself one question: "Why the hel!! did I wait so long to switch"?

Later
@cs2010
Wow, you are really blinded by the insipid apple kool-aid. Then, try to slam another product to take the stink off of this dud. Nice try, but no apple core. If you is really enamored by this POS, fine, but hope you have a bunch of duct tape on hand. Note, Lowes have a 30m roll on sale for $7.98. Enjoy your sticky situation!

@cs2010 Your use of words like "seamlessly" to describe antenna performance lead me to believe that you would say anything good about the iPhone 4, if it only pops into your head. Also, your blatant (and oh-so-expected) attack of the EVO confirms your biased approach to the issue. Who cares about the EVO? If iPhone 4 needs to be fixed, then it needs to be done. EVO or not. (Btw, where's your unlimited internet with the iPhone? Or the 8 MP camera? Or, while we're at it, the incredibly feature rich UI? And the lack of complaints about the device? I am in love with Apple's products' designs but this is rather serious...
@cs2010 C'mon dude! You really have one of those? My sister have one, she let me use it for a week and that week was really miserable for me: almost 75% dropped calls. It's true, you have to hold the phone in a certain way or the calls drop . Very annoying and important design flaw.
Design is nice, as everything Apple, but you don't need a phone to look at in a museum, you need a phone that makes what it's supposed to do without problems, to make phone calls in the real world. I've neved had a phone that forces me to grab it in such a restrictive way or it won't work.
Duck tape, ha! This phone is a lemon and Apple executives are idiots if they think the users are to blame for a defective product. They should correct the problem ASAP in stead of blaming customers and delete comments at their help forums.
I think you don't have one and/or you're a FANBOY.

@NStalnecker
Apple has been in the unique position of having their army of rabid fans do the lions share of the fighting in the past. Its allowed them to respond to questions and concerns about Apple products with half stories and red herrings that generally take the focus off the real issue they are confronted with. The inevitable clamor that rises up from their fans objecting to virtually any kind of criticism about an Apple product usually served in the past to give some kind of legitimacy to Apples stance that believe it or not; all is well in Jobsville.

It can be pretty hard for many to take complaints very seriously when you have the Apple Corps screaming cries of "the claims are sheer insanity", it gives the impression that those who know and use the very products complained of think they are perfect.

Mind you, most of the Apple fanatics who rush to Apples defence will tell you that they don't think Apple is perfect, on the other hand if you try to point out any imperfection with an Apple product the very same fans will do what they can to cut you off at the knees for even suggesting an "actual" problem exists with some product. I guess its much easier to accept imperfection so long as you simply admit it exists without acknowledging exactly where it exists.

I guess I'm one of the targets for your hatred - I suppose the fact that I run many non-Apple products (even where Apple have products) doesn't help.

Is this causing me to suffer? Well I'll admit I'd have liked a nice new phone, and the iPhone 4 seems like a good option. Currently I'll wait it out, see what happens with this issue.

I can't stand the display on HTC's new phones, but the Sony Ericsson X10 has a nice display (it's no "Retina Display" but still), the Android version is a bit long in the tooth - but I guess there are always compromises. Anyone got one of these phones (and unlike NonZealot) want to give me the skinny?
@Jeremy-UK

I have the HTC Droid Incredible, and even my iPhone-toting boyfriend likes it. The web surfing is quite fast, there are plenty of apps, and it still performs its primary function as a phone.

I'm a Verizon user, and that does weigh heavily into my device choice. I plan to stick with Verizon not only for the network, but for the excellent customer service and technical support--features that are apparently nonexistent in the iPhone world.
@Jeremy-UK Its not a hatred, more of a bitter sweet victory. Every apple/iphone user I know has a certain smugness about them. That their product is superior to everything therefor makes them superior. They have products that "just work". Well reality is no they don't. It's annoying to everyone else and its comical now with all that is going on.

@topgun966: Maybe you should read the CR article for yourself. Apple users are smug because they know they have the best product; even this CR report proves it. No, it's hatred against Apple because Apple made a comeback when it should have died--a comeback that now threatens the livelihood of many old-school techs whose job security is not so secure any more.
@Jeremy-UK
Nexus One vs I4 - the I4 has a better display but not by much. I find myself more often asking "why is the i4 display so small?".
@vulpine

No ones saying Apple doesn't have a great product, a lot of folks are saying it has issues, problems, bugs, etc.... that Apple wants to hide/ignore/not address/etc....

The CR report goes right along with those user findings.

Lighten up.

I think Consumer Reports on the iPhone 4 is weird cause they claim it's like the best phone out there but don't buy it.. Strange but true. As I've stated in the past Apple has never been nor is now perfect and I expect to see and have seen Apple make mistakes. Not sure how this will turn out but time will tell not you my friend. Nor the blogs or the haters who often show up here eh NonZ:) End result no suffering here.

@James Quinn I think Consumer Reports on the iPhone 4 is weird cause they claim it's like the best phone out there but don't buy it..

Nice sugar coating. More like, that it would be a fantastic phone... if it weren't for the lousy antenna design.
Actually Badgered...

The antenna design is brilliant... This is simply about a common sense understanding of technology... Normal consumer televisions, toasters, electronics, etc. do not work when submerged in water... You have to be touching the heart monitor on exercise equipment in order for it to read your heart rate. Don't stick metal objects in electrical wall outlets... These are NOT common sense things to people who have lived thier lives in remote areas lacking in modern technology. But they are common sense things to the majority of the world.

There are actual 2 places (lines) on the iPhone 4, that you could touch and lose signal. The outer band is made up of 2 separate antennas, one for GPS, the other for cell calls. If you connect them with something conductive (your finger or hand), then the 2 separate antennas interfere with each other and you see the signal drop. Having those antennas on the outer band means they work better, (providing you are not a dork and bridge the antennas with your finger).

So if you are a moron, then the iPhone 4 is not for you.

I have an iPhone 4, I have many friends with iPhone 4s as well... We all bought cases when we bought our iPhones... We all love our iPhone 4s and we all agree that the iPhone 4 reception is better than the previous iPhones... I am able to make clear calls in areas where I had poor reception with my 3GS. (no new towers).

Consumer Reports saying not to buy an iPhone 4 is like Consumer Reports saying don't have a home with electricity because you get shocked when you stick a fork in an outlet. It's just plain stupid...
@i8thecat Don't stick metal objects in electrical wall outlets...

So not touching a corner of your iPhone is equivalent to sticking metal objects in a socket... Well... I honestly don't know what to say to that. I can't help you.
@James Quinn
Sorry Pagen, but you are misqouting CR. What they said was there was some nice features about the I4g, but they could not recommend it because of the conditions it exhibited. In other it does not work as advertised. In layman's term, a dude!

@NonZealot

Oh yeah, we're really suffering after riding the stock up another 100% in the past year alone...God it sucks having to count all that money...It must be a lot easier to be poor and dumb like you...
@GENESIS667@...

Well I've always said it's better to own Apple stock than their products. You can save money AND make money at the same time!
