Bing-powered search share climbs the most in October
Summary: Google retains the search crown, but Bing wins for most improved.
Bing stepped up its game considerably in the domestic search market share, according to the latest figures from research firm Experian Hitwise.
The report, which covers the four weeks ending October 29, found that Microsoft's search engine was the most improved from the prior month as Bing-powered searches climbed by 2 percent to cover 28.62 percent of searches (second place), while Bing.com grew even more by 3 percent to hold onto fourth place with 13.23 percent.
This might be even more shocking news. Google was the only one in the top four to actually slip, which it did so by only 1 percent. Of course, Google is still sitting pretty at the top with 65.38 percent of the search market.
Nevertheless, Yahoo is also improving as it saw a positive change by 1 percent to retain third place at 15.39 percent of the market.
That's a huge contrast to the search share breakdown in September when Bing-powered searches actually dropped by 3 percent, while Yahoo dropped by the most with a negative 4 percent change.
Here are a few other notable highlights from the report:
- The remaining 66 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis report accounted for 6 percent of U.S. searches.
- One-word search queries increased 3 percent between September and October.
- One-word searches comprised the majority of searches, amounting to 27.23 percent of all queries.
- Shorter search queries (one to four words) remained flat.
- Longer search queries (five to eight words or more) went down by 2 percent.

And Yahoo! seems to to be buying share; the last two times I upgraded software, I was offered the chance to make Yahoo my default search. I declined both times, but one did it anyway, and it it took two days and a cry for help to get it fixed.
Let's face it, there no other way that pre-moribund Y! can achieve anything. :(

After Google's recent changes, I am looking for new search.
Bing is OK but I have been really surprised by a new one out there, DuckDuckGo. It is a very small operation (1 person I think) but for its size, I am really impressed. It has lots of the feel Google did 7-9 years ago. Low spam. Highly relevant results. Pretty darn fast. Blekko is also interesting but I am finding it harder to control.

But bing need to step up the game. Outside US and certain european coutries, bing is still in beta and the local search results are not good as google. Bing should use nokia maps in these countries and roll out all bing services that are available in US and Europe.
