BlackBerry service down again in Europe, Middle East, Africa: Twice in two days

Summary: Research in Motion is suffering from another service outage and users are going to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

SHARE:

Research in Motion issued a statement that BlackBerry services were "operating normally" after a service crash affected users across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but many customers are still seeing downtime.

Update: In a statement addressing today's issues, Research in Motion said:

"Some users in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina are experiencing messaging and browsing delays.  We are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible.  We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

BlackBerry users are flooding microblogging site Twitter with comments of anger, frustration and outright fury, after another service failure seems to have brought all data services for BlackBerry consumer handsets.

Users across Europe are complaining that data is not flowing to or from their devices, with network dependent operations like text messaging and multimedia messaging still working.

ZDNet colleagues have also reported difficulties with the BlackBerry service.

Research in Motion, the BlackBerry maker which maintains the BlackBerry infrastructure, enables data services such as email, browsing and applications to function.

Users across Europe, the Middle East and Africa -- from Spain, Belgium, France, Germany and as far away as South Africa -- say that the BlackBerry service is down.

T-Mobile UK tweeted that there was another outage with the BlackBerry service, and that "BlackBerry are currently investigating this."

With less than 24 hours since the last outage, Research in Motion offered no explanation as to why the network failed. Sources had said that a datacenter in Slough, near London, had failed due to a service outage.

Some customers of the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) also suffered downtime, Microsoft tweeted yesterday. BPOS, though not accepting new customers in favour of the new Office 365 suite of products, uses BlackBerry back-end to support business users. Because the BlackBerry service is hosted, some Microsoft users also suffered during the outage.

The Slough-based datacenter, which provides BlackBerry online services, went down around 11am GMT yesterday morning and took nearly the full day to restore services. By the evening, the backlog of email queued for delivery started to appear on BlackBerry handsets.

Research in Motion "could not confirm the outage", but will make a statement as and when they have any more information through.

  • Good news:

No riots in the UK today, for sure.
And less turbulence on the financial markets, for sure.

Maybe BB services should remain offline?

  • BB DOWN AGAIN.....

Once again BBM is down in South Africa. Internet and outgoing e-mails are working but no incoming e-mails.

    Peace and quiet........

@JamesmPat ... if an email is outgoing, but not incoming, where exactly is it?

        @dwhipple E-mail limbo?

These outages will do wonders for RIMs already dwindling image.

to bates_ Why bother adding drivel if you've nothing constructive to say? I doubt you even comprehend the service offering or problem but feel the need to talk.

        a) It's not all down. Its sporadic, mine is fine, 90%+ of my company is fine (40,000 users).
        b) It's a secure service. Only a fool can compare this to normal email/iphone internet/pop3 mail. Yes you can get secure iphone mail, via a secure app and a secure server. I dont have one to hand,... do you?
        c) 'Dwindling' is a subjective term and relatively meaningless. I do agree they need to drop the rubbish and get much better kit like the Torch. I have iphone, android, and BB Torch; given that iphone lsts 1 day on charge, BB 2 days; I choose my BB every day. (And lower models than mine will easily last three days of use on 1 charge. This is important to me). I could use my iphone if my BB service was impacted, but I haven't need to.

ps I do feel for folk affected by the outage but given I administer our BES I can say it's not neen as bad as some are paintin in the media. I do wish I knew why it was sporadic, but i dont.

If you are going to provide a service, provide it right or don't provide it at all. Simple.

Drop your phone number and expect a call from some senior RIM execs. It's this wisdom the guys at RIM have forgotten. Maybe you can point them in the right direction and spot the issue with some fresh eyes.

Did you say the same with the iphone antenna problem? Do you say the same when a Broadband centre goes down? (like we had in the UK recently) $hit happens from time to time. Get over it and, like I said in an earlier post, my experience is its sporadic. It's not affected me at all, and the majority of the BBs I administer are ticketyboo thank you.

From Botswana....BBM services are out, no incoming emails. sms and mms are working. I guess the problem is not network related but directly linked to RIM.
    SO what exactly is wrong?

BB has egg on its face and appears to be in denial. You are feeding your android nexus. I feel you got arrogant and may be having reality issues. The world can make it without you. You cannot make it without them. Shape up or get kicked out twits.

Has anyone actually thought RIM have been compromised? Why else would they be silent with no feedback to their customer base, surely if it was a simple hardware malfunction then they would have
identified, fixed and provided a response, coupled with the fact i'm sure their DR plans would have kicked into play to save them the embarrassment of a lengthy outage. Drama over! However they need to address their total lack of communication... The silence is deafening and echoes the RSA debacle... They were breached and thousands of customers were left in the dark. RSA stayed quiet whilst it could get their PR teams in place with how best to deflect the heat and spin and also leave it long enough for people to find something new to talk about before releasing their official statement. They knew they'd been hacked the minute it happened and what they needed was time...

I'm intrigued to hear what Blackberry are going to do in order to redeem themselves from this one!

      @Peppster

This is what RIM says what the problem is-
RIM was attempting a software upgrade on its database but suffered corruption problems, and that attempts to switch back to an older version led to a collapse.

And the activist are pouncing on this. I think Ichan and Whitworth get a bad wrap when they come to the rescue for things going a wry. http://www.nndb.com/people/370/000177836/
