Can Google Music and Froyo overthrow the iPod-iTunes-iPhone monarchy?

By | June 15, 2010, 3:30am PDT

Summary: Google is reportedly gearing up for a launch of Google Music, a move to go head to head with Apple and iTunes, starting this fall.

The one thing I’m most looking forward to in my forthcoming Android update - aka Froyo - is the enhanced music feature that promises to unleash wireless streaming from my personal iTunes music library to my Droid Incredible.

Like many others, I’m deeply entrenched in Apple’s music ecosystem, an iPod player populated with music purchased from or ripped into iTunes, indexed and cataloged in Apple’s format. Now that I’ve plunged into the world of Android, though, I’d like to turn my device into a true iPhone replacement - and that includes music.

Also see: Top 10 ways the HTC Droid Incredible killed my iPhone envy

When I saw Google demo the Froyo feature at Google I/O last month, it started to make sense - Google marched in to the mobile device scene with a small (and growing) army of devices and targeted the iPhone-deprived consumers, those of us non-AT&Ters. First, they sold us on Android as a phone. Then came the big push into Apps. Now, as the Android army has grown bigger, it’s time to head into the next battlefield: music.

CNET’s Greg Sandoval is reporting that Google could launch a music service with song downloads and streaming music by this fall, citing music sector insiders. Granted, it’s not the first to try to take on iTunes. Amazon, for example, has a nice digital storefront - but hasn’t been able to gain enough traction to become a threat.

But Amazon was missing something that Google now has: a device with a brand name that is spreading like wildfire as the iPhone alternative. Actually, it’s a brand for the platform, not any of the devices (Droid excluded). But that’s just a technicality for the consumer who can walk into any wireless carrier store and simply ask for an Android phone and have the clerk point one out - now, alongside the brand spanking new iPhone 4 at AT&T stores.

The deeper I find myself getting into the world of Android, the more I look for ways out of the iPod-iTunes world. Why? In a sense, I feel like Apple has moved on and is leaving behind those of us unwilling to hop on board the AT&T bus to get to the next level of the iPod experience.

Sure, I have an iPod Touch and it’s a great experience when I’m home or someplace else where there’s WiFi. But what I really wanted was an iPhone - and only those willing to pay for poor service were allowed to take the next step with the company. I wasn’t willing to do that.

As Google ups its offerings with Android, it continues to squash reasons for me to want to stay locked into Apple’s world of music.

I wonder if craigslist will see a jump in “iPod Touch For Sale” ads once Froyo is widely deployed.

Personally I think it is possible
BondiGeek 15th Jun 2010
Having used both iPhone and recently converted to Android (http://www.bondigeek.com/blog/2010/06/07/htc-legend-android-behold-the-iphone-slayer/) nothing could make me happier than to ditch iTunes.

That said I really like Zune on Windows 7 as a media player and music library so I am hanging out for Windows Phone 7.

Personally I am 'over' Apple and their closed and crippled hardware. The upgrade ploy from them is wearing very thin and open competition from Google and Microsoft is most welcome.

BondiGeek
@BondiGeek I'm sorry, but Gartner is full of it on this one unless they're ONLY considering IT departments that have been XP exclusively for the past 5 years and haven't bought new systems. But for most people, system replacements are inevitable and upgrades desirable for most IT shops.

I'm in the middle of Windows 7 roll-outs right now. All of my mobile users are officially on Windows 7, and my desktop deployments are about 1/4 in progress. For the ones that need replacing, we're going straight to Win7 through OEM licensing, and for the existing XP/Vista licensed systems, we're volume licensing our way to Win7, which really isn't any more expensive than previous versions.

I don't understand why every week there is claimed doom and gloom on the IT side of business deployments. IT departments that want to remain relevant will be upgrading. Those who don't, don't care either way, so no doom or gloom needed. friv yeni oyunlar oyunlar kral oyun

huhh? what is this apple format you are talking about? another stupid apple is closed, apple is proprietary meme? there is no apple format.

Obviously it wouldn't be a proper blog entry with an Apple reference if it read:

"...indexed and cataloged using an XML file with a published dtd that any application can use to access the iTunes library"

Delusional Apple haters

immersed in Android. And they laugh at the Jobs' reality distortion field. (ie, EVO still being put on a pedestal despite the recent issues re poor quality and functionality)

The only thing presently going for the iPhone wannabe Android is iPhone being exclusive to AT&T. Android will take a big hit if/once the iPhone becomes widely available on other carriers.

But keep up the mindless fanboism and Apple bashing as it proves Mac "zealots" are the tame and sane ones happy

Master Joe Says...Apple
MasterJoe 15th Jun 2010
@MacCanuck The only thing Apple has going for it is a reputation of being the latest "hip" thing. Eventually, other players will come to the market, and taht will end, just as all fads do. That is the downside of BEING a fad or trendy item. While I am not a huge Android fan, and cannot say anything on Windows Phone 7 until we actually see it out this Fall/Winter, I also am not a big iPhone fan, and am even less a fan of the Apple business model. Being described as a "walled-garden" is not the way you want to go, when dealing with the Internet, or anything related to it. Besides, they say history has a habit of repeating itself. And, with Jobs right back at the helm, it is very possible that Apple will, once again, self-implode. The harsh reality is, if it weren't for Microsoft, there would be no Apple at all. I'm nto sure of the exact number now, but look up the amount of shares in stock Microsoft purchased of Apple back in the 90s. Or, watch the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley." While there is an obvious dramatization of the story, it does give you a basic idea of how everything went down. I could be wrong, but only time will tell.

fading

@MasterJoe
you mean the iphone and now the ipad will fade as a trendy item as the ipod did? oh wait, it didn't. besides the onslaught of all the self pronounced ipod killers over the last decade it is still no 1 in the pmp realm by a wide margin. seems your assumption is flawed. and please stop the bs fud meme of the wallet garden. for your daily dose of porn fire up safari, for you totally open, uncontrolled apps get a web app in html5 and if you want to buy from apple's very own store, yes you have to live with whatever apple decides to sell there. as would any other store in the world. walled garden? can i use android apps on my iphone, wii games on the xbox? puleeze.

p.s. and no, not the microsoft saved apple lie again. when microrosft invested 150 million in apple in 1997, apple had still more than a billion in cash at hand. so much for saving. and the 150 million were a part of a licensing dispute settlement, that involved cross patenting. no, sorry your fud doesn't stick. no saving here.

apple is on a roll to take over the whole technology world. it has already eclipsed microsoft in market cap. will be in revenue and profits soon. google is already far behind. get used to it.

@MasterJoe

Anyone using the word "fad" to describe Apple's devices is only outing their own bias towards the company. As mentioned, the iPod was supposed to be a fad also. Mac computers was supposed to die decades ago, but they're still selling in droves, especially their laptops.

Apple is not "waled gardening" the internet, it's wide open as it should be. Apple is supporting open standards like HTML5 and H.264 instead of proprietary like Flash. The work/code Apple have put into the webkit engine (Safari) was open sourced for others to use. Rim, Google with its Chrome and Android browser, Nokia with the Symbian operating system, Samsung, LG, Palm just to name a few benefiting from Apple's open-project. So to say Apple is walled-gardening the web is grossly misrepresenting their position.

They have every right to control their own personal App store.
@dave95,

Apple does "not" truly support open standards, they're only using it a as ploy to try and dethrone standards like Flash. To add confusion for those that are either too naive, or DUMB to know otherwise.

Apple does media. They do video, now games, and now advertising. This is where Flash is used primarily on the Web. Even music has been handled by Flash via the Web. These are areas Apple wants COMPLETE control of on their iOS devices.

And talk about proprietary -- I'm assuming this is the word you were looking for -- and hypocrisy, Apple's so called support for open standards involves downloading THEIR browser. DUMB!

And please get your facts straight. H.264 is not an open standard. Companies like MS and Apple are invested in it, as is Adobe btw. You should know that Flash Player 10 added support for H.264 and ACC playback 3 years ago. You should also know that Adobe AIR is built on Webkit, just like Safari.

Would you mind clarifying how companies like Nokia's Symbian OS is benefitting from Apple's open-project? But first off, what is this open-project you're imagining? Adobe has been working on an open-screen project. Is that what you were thinking of?

To say Apple is open is being willingly naive. Browsing the web on an iOS devicce is limited, as it excludes standards like Java, Flash, any plug-in for that matter,. This was intentional on Apple's part, because they want you to go through their App store and/or iTunes to buy what you'd normally have done for free via a plug-in like Flash.
@TongueDar
"Would you mind clarifying how companies like Nokia's Symbian OS is benefitting from Apple's open-project?"

Does Webkit ring any bill? Yes? No?
@TongueDar

You may find this link interesting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebKit

If you're going to respond to me, least you could do is understand the statement I was responding to. I never said Apple was "open", just that they've been supporting open standards for years when it comes to the web. Nothing walled-garden about that. I used their work on the webkit engine (read up) as an example of them supporting an open standard-driven web. HTML5, CSS, JavaScript always supported. H.264 may not be an "open" standard (royalties), but Apple was one of the first to support it and push it with their iPods/iTunes. Now everyone else is supporting it, making it a default standard.

The argument about Flash being a threat to the iOS App Store is bull. Firstly Flash was never offered as an option on any browser the last three years the iPhone been out, so the argument fails from the start. How could it be a threat when it's not even out, on any mobile browser? And Flash is still in beta wink

And i've yet to see Flash games on the web that rivals many of the games found in the App Store, that takes full advantage of the device power. Why would Apple be scared? The game everyone is going crazy about is Farmville (some strange reason) and that's also coming to the iPhone. They can't be afraid of sites like YouTube when they've offered a YouTube app from the get-go. And YouTube have been transitioning to the open HTML5 and H.264, so iPhone/iPad users can easily play videos from the website, like they would with Flash. Hulu which uses Flash is said to be coming to the iPhone. Now why would they allow service like Hulu, ABC, CBS, Netflix Apps, YouTube site if they're so scared of it effecting their iTunes ecosystem?

Not again!
frabjous Updated - 15th Jun 2010
@MasterJoe has, as is frequently the case, gotten his history wrong again. For the umpteenth time, MS bought $150 million in Apple stock as part of a settlement of a lawsuit that MS lost, a sum that at that time was about six days' worth of Apple revenue. In fact, when MS later sold the stock, it made a significant profit on the investment. Rather than implode, Apple has grown under Jobs' direction to the second largest company in the US in terms of market capitalization (total number of shares times price per share) second only to Exxon-Mobil. For the current data, see: http://ycharts.com/calculations/rankings/market_cap
Yes, that means the second most valued company in the United States. I bet Joe knows that Jobs only takes $1/year in salary, too.

Apple's success with the iPod
Pete "athynz" Athens 16th Jun 2010
@MasterJoe line already kills this "fad" theory of yours. And as others have pointed out, Microsoft did not "save" Apple, they paid that money to Apple as a settlement for taking code from QuickTime to put into their own media player... So in reality Apple never "self imploded" - they did have some issues when Gil Amelio was CEO... issues which were corrected when Jobs returned to the company.

It will be interesting to see how the Google Music/ Froyo combo works out...
@MacCanuck, @banned from zdnet

Android fanboys don't have a clue what you are trying to say. They are far to fanatical and delusional to be objective. Rant, rant, bash bash. Some great arguments there boys.
@MacCanuck I welcome the day when the iPhone comes to other carriers so it can sit along side the monsters of the Android world. It always ends up looking like a joke next to my Incredible and the Incredible is about to look like a joke in a month or so. Let the people see the joke that is the iPhone right at the time of purchase and Apple will be whittled down to its nutcase fanboys like the one I'm replying to. Everyone else will be on the serious devices controlling their Google TV's and wirelessly streaming their music collections....at the same time. wink
@Master Joe: actually, the thing that Apple has going for it is not "hipness" but how natural Apple interfaces feel to many people. Apple spends more time and effort engineering the user experience - and it shows. Admittedly, not everyone finds Apple interfaces to be simple and natural - people don't all think in exactly the same way so NO interface will ever appeal to everyone equally.

In any case, I gladly welcome the Android, Verizon, Microsoft and all of Apple's other competitors - competition drives innovation, improvement and lower prices.
Would be nice to see this model in play.
I do a significant bit of business via Amazon including music (much cheaper than iTunes).

and on the "me" side, I am moving to a Streak this summer so this would be a win.

Nice.

Lala lives??
wmcoverdale 15th Jun 2010
Assume Google can replicate Lala without impinging on any copyrights, that Apple now holds. Lala was a cloud music App that was far superior to Itunes. You could download your existing music collection to Lala and thereafter access it on any computer anywhere. You could purchase music on the cloud for 10 cents a song and play the song on the cloud with your own songs. If you did not like cloud music you could buy and download the song to your computer in the conventional manner. The sound quality of cloud songs played from my computer via my AVR and its speakers was equal in quality to downloaded music. Since the music is in the cloud, your listening device had no need to have a large hard drive to access your music stored in the cloud. Now if Google's new music app does replicate Lala's features, and Apple keeps Lala in the dumpster, Android would become the clear phone of choice for me.
@wmcoverdale ...and thats probably exactly why Apple snagged up Lala. People think these features just pop up the day before they are announced.
@wmcoverdale If you want to try something that does what Lala does but from your computer so that you don't pay again for something you bought, Jam11 is doing a closed beta for their product and you can go to www.jam11.com and get a beta code from them to try it out.
Why does no one mention Rhapsody? I've started slowly, as befitting my limited funds, with a Sansa Clip and now have moved to an iPod Touch. I still use Rhapsody on a daily basis via its iTunes app, and at $14.99 for unlimited downloads and up to three devices, it is more than I could possibly need to support my music habit.

Granted, I plan to upgrade my phone but I'm waiting to compare all the devices once Microsoft's offerings come out. I'm not crazy about living without Flash, but then Adobe's near-monopoly and security problems have always made me more than a little leery.

Standards such as HTML5 and Silverlight to a lesser extent will hopefully gain ground and consumers such as myself can shop with our hard-earned dollars and not feel constrained by a "business model."

I cannot help but feel excited about how open-source, however defined, is forcing the entire industry to innovate, and compete, for their audience.
I could never understand why iPod became dominant. Just good marketing, I guess, and lots of sycophants sucked in by Job$. I have had and used many different personal music and video players over the years including an iPod. The iPod is the only one, other than creative, that i didn't like. I absolutely hated iTunes and would never purchase any device that required using iTunes.
@eddzpc@...

Well, we now have an exact clone of iTunes for Android called Double Twist, which seem to be gaining in popularity. So maybe iTunes wasn't all that bad if Android users want to clone it. wink

The only thing saving Apple...
storm14k 16th Jun 2010
The only thing saving Apple at this point is the lack of the Google commercial. In just a 30 second commercial Google could actually destroy the iPhone. iFools love to say "its the experience". But in reality when comparing the two products that like saying riding a tricycle is an experience vs driving a Porche. The tricycle is an experience to them because unlike the Porche you don't have to know much to just get on it and peddle.

In reality however experience is the sum of features. Thats what makes a Porche different from a tricycle or a Ford. All it would take is for Google to show 30 seconds of the features of Android that make it so seamless to not just itself but the world around it and no one would care about an iPhone. Once people see the features of Froyo like being able to push things to your phone or make a phone call by hilighting a phone number in your browser and right clicking it would be completely over. Only the fanyboys that can't stand that something is better than an Apple product would be left. Google doesn't want to kill Apple though so it won't happen.
How can android users like Flash? It is buggy on Linux and not supported in many distributions.
