The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility and its Jaguar system kept the No. 1 spot on the Top500 list of fastest supercomputers, but China's new Nebulae is close behind at No. 2.

The Top500 list will be presented June 31 at the ISC'10 Conference held in Hamburg, Germany. The rankings are compiled by Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim, Germany; Erich Strohmaier and Horst Simon of NERSC/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Nebulae, which emerged late last year as China's big entry into supercomputing, is currently the fastest system worldwide with a theoretical peak performance of 2.98 petaflops per second. One petaflop/s is one quadrillon calculations per second.

Nebulae, located at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, China, runs on a Dawning TC3600 Blade system with Intel X5650 processors and Nvidia Tesla C2050 GPUs. Nebulae's Linpack performance benchmark was 1.271 PFlop/s so it was No. 2. Dawning is an Asia-based high performance computing vendor. Supercomputing systems with GPU accelerators have a higher theoretical limit.

Jaguar held on to No. 1 with 1.75 PFlop/s. Jaguar's theoretical peak is 2.3 Pflop/s and almost a quarter of a million cores (see paper on how Jaguar works).

At No. 3 was Roadrunner, housed at Los Alamos, with a performance at 1.04 Pflop/s.

Among other key points:

  • China is No. 2 in installed performance now---due to Nebulae and the No. 7 Tianhe-1 system. Tianhe-1 and Nebulae are both hybrid designs with Intel Xeon processors and AMD or NVidia GPUs used as accelerators. Each node of Tianhe-1 consists of two AMD GPUs attached to two Intel Xeon processors.
  • The U.S. is the largest consumer of high-performance computing systems with 282 of the Top500 fastest computers. Europe accounts for 144 systems with Asia at 57 systems. In Europe, the U.K. has the most systems. In Asia, China has the most with 24 systems, followed by Japan (18 systems) and India (5 systems).
  • IBM's BlueGene/P supercomputer was No. 5 and good for the fastest system in Europe.
  • Quad-core processor systems dominate the Top500 list with 425 systems using them. Processors with six or more cores are found in 25 systems and can be expected to increase going forward.
  • 81.6 percent of the systems---408 supercomputers---listed in the Top500 are using Intel chips. That tally is up from 80.4 percent six months ago. AMD's Opteron chip powers 47 systems (9.4 percent) up from 42 supercomputers six months ago. IBM Power processors run 42 systems (8.4 percent), down from 52 six months ago.
  • IBM and HP sell the most supercomputers in the Top500 list. IBM has 198 systems (40 percent) in the Top500 list followed by HP with 185 supercomputers (37 percent). Six months ago, HP led IBM. Cray, SGI and Dell account for anywhere from 3 percent to 4 percent of the Top500 list.
  • Big Blue accounts for 33.6 percent of the Top500 list's total performance. HP has 20.4 percent of total performance.

    • Larry: A Day Late and A Dollar Short! ;)

@lucho_monge@... But even Jaguar will be short lived atop the Super Computer Heap. They are only on top of Roadrunner, because they're using all AMD's fastest chips. IBM is right now is building Blue Waters, scheduled to ship in 8 months. It will run on their Power7 (32 core monsters) and be capable of up to 16 PetaFlops. That's 6 times faster than the maximum theoretical computational power of Nebulae. IBM Roadrunner is just a little behind Nebulae now. But in other words, nobody'll touch Blue Waters for many years, unless it's another IBM!

Who did they steal the technology from this time?

They have been stealing everything legally and illegally that isn't bolted to the floor for a long time. This is in exchange for their cheap labor. Their goal is to bring over all the jobs to China and leave us at their mercy and in their control. They will succeed unless we can get the socilaist appeasers out of government and consumers chnage their buying habits to look for American made products. If their no jobs, than the country can't be a super power. Just look at how USSR crashed and continues it's decline.

Problem with that idea is that most USA made products have horrible quality control, I bought a $130 made 100% in the USA toy that required some assembly, the tabs and slots that they were supposed to go in were off by as much as 5 inches from actually fitting together! I went to get a replacement and had to argue for 30 minutes before the manager would take the return. I opened the new one in the store and it was just as bad. I then wrote down the numbers on the box (hoping one was a "lot" #) and went to another store, theirs had none of the same numbers on them so I bought one and took it home... same problem... if you want people to buy american, then you need to import some chinese to make the products so that they'll actually function.

    Truth and Lies:

Truth: US is at China's mercy because the former owes China over U$1 trillion and rising. Just watch Clinto brought the entire Obama's Cabinet over to Beijing this last week to kowtow for more cheap loans.

    Lies: China stealing US technology.

For 80% of China's history, she has been the #1 economic, military, and political power in world history. The last 150 years was part of the remaining 20% of her history. The first decade is certainly China's decade: First time hosted the Olympics in 2008 and got the largest gold counts in Olympics' 2,000 years history. Now holding the world's largest World Expo in Shanghai.

China even founded America, not Columbus. So without China there is no modern America, just our friendly American Indians living undisturbed in peace with nature. With the US, the world got two world wars and saw humanity first use of weapon of mass destruction. Obama has the vision to kill the destruction the Pan-America empire illusion to a stop. Think of all the wars America fought under the guise of human rights and freedom and the enslavement of other countries US attempted to wrought on the world. The world cheers China resurgent and the demise of the Evil Empire. Have no illusion, resistance is futile, you will be assimiliated.

    • What a bunch of garbage! Fact: China is a dependent country...

and it's dependent upon the consuming markets, most noticeably, the U.S.

Without the U.S. as a market for China's production, China would be just another 3rd World Country, either looking for a handout from the free-market leaders, or it would just remain another communist country trying to make a go of their socialist ideals, where those ideals had kept the country very poor in the past.

The fact is that China, with 1 1/4 billion people, is still one of the poorest countries on the planet. Though they may have entered into the modern world with some 200 million people leaving poverty, the rest of the population (over 1 billion of them) are still living in misery.

People have a right to know the facts, but some "facts" don't tell the whole story, and many "facts" can be made up on the spot.

So, as long as China remains dependent upon the consumer countries for its production, it will not become the world leader that many people continue to lie about. Most people in China cannot even afford the products which are manufactured there. Without a large "consumer market" of its own, where people can purchase whatever the country produces, China will remain dependent upon the U.S. and other consuming countries.

I agree with you.Why do so many people still treat China with the Cold War mentality. Why does US still block the technology from China ? China has never treat any other country on the technical block, we are always kindly open to friendly countries . Although China is a socialist country, her is essentially different from the Soviet Union.China needs the world, the world also needs China. We live on the unique earth ,and it is good for us to live kindly, isn't it. I hope more and more people could understand China instead of hostile attitudes. Isn't Right?friends from the other side of earth.

  • RE: China's Nebulae duels U.S. Jaguar on Supercomputer Top 500 list

I think there was a report here on ZDnet last week that stated the US debt to China is in the $900 million dollar range, not quite $1 Trillion and certainly not over $Trillion. I would like to know more on how "China even founded America, not Columbus." I do not remember that being in my history books, but I may have skipped that part, so please enlighten. But I do agree about american wars, we need to keep ourselves in our own country and worry about americans. the US military needs to start policing the home land and keep their noses out of other countries until everything is right in our own country.
