Securing a trusted IT partner could be the key to widespread cloud adoption and deployment among small and medium businesses, based on a new report from Dell.

Conducted in partnership with global IT SMB market research analyst firm Techaisle, the survey found that cloud applications are becoming much more prevalent at SMBs this year than you might have expected.

CRM, in particular, is the most popular of any cloud application at up to 55 percent, an increase of up to 34 percent from 2010.

Many of the SMB participants cited single sign-on, automated feature and functionality upgrades, faster deployment, a lower total cost of ownership, and simplified access from a browser as some of the expected benefits of moving to cloud-based applications.

But one of the problems for small businesses, in general, is a lack of manpower. Nearly 50 percent of respondents complained that managing multiple vendors was tedious and time consuming.

Thus, most SMBs are looking for a trusted, one-stop shop for setting up and managing their cloud solutions.

For reference, the report is based upon the responses of IT decision makers surveyed in December at over 400 SMBs in the United States with at least one cloud-based business application

In related news, Dell also revealed availability details about the upgraded PowerEdge servers that were introduced last week.

Designed for handling mission-critical applications ranging from collaboration to high-performance computing, pricing starts at $1,789. The PowerEdge C6220 will be available first later this month. The Dell Quickstart Data Warehouse Appliance, still in beta, will roll out during the second quarter, as will vStart for Dell Private Cloud.
