Facebook: 500 million strong and sharing life-changing stories

By | July 21, 2010, 10:37am PDT

Summary: Despite being slammed in a customer service survey this week, Facebook announces that it’s registered its 500 millionth user and has launched a new app where users share stories of how Facebook has changed their lives.

It’s a thin line between love and hate - and Facebook is finding out that its users are truly straddling that line.

This time yesterday, the headlines about Facebook stemmed from a report that put Facebook below the IRS, the airlines and cable companies in terms of customer satisfaction. Its users, it seems, have concerns about their personal privacy, site changes and so on.

But they don’t stop coming. And they don’t stop sharing.

Facebook said today that the site registered its 500 millionth user, a monstrous milestone that shows that Facebook’s growth and momentum are no where near slowing down. Sure, that comes with downsides, such as lawsuits that surface years later to try to take credit for the the site. When you’re a big company, you suddenly get a big target on your back.

To celebrate the milestone, Facebook said it is launching an app called Facebook Stories, a place where users can share stories about how Facebook has impacted their lives. The stories are categorized by themes such as crime fighting, Education, parenting, grief or relationships, among others.

Clearly, Facebook has had an impact on our lives, helping us to reconnect with people from our pasts or share in the ups and downs of the lives of people we care about. Even though the customer satisfaction survey hinted that a competitor could come in and unseat Facebook if it offered a more compelling user experience.

As hard as it is to imagine starting over in a new social network, it’s also important to note that many people easily jumped from MySpace to Facebook.

I believe there are about 6 billion people in the world, give or take a few million. Now I suspect there are tens of millions of those who don't have PCs or iPhones, or live in countries that restrict internet access. So, the total number of people that could have a Facebook account is going to be somewhat else. Let's be geneous and say 5 billion. Of course, businesses and other organizations have FB accounts as well.

But basically, Facebook is saying that about 1 in 10 people (real or artificial) in the entire world have a Facebook account. That just blows my mind!

In developed nations such as the USA, the likelihood is that the percentage is much higher.

This supports a commentary I saw recently that says that Orwell's "1984" has finally arrived, but Big Brother is actually Facebook.

Am I the only one left without a Facebook account? Why do I feel like Charlton Heston in the "Omega Man"?

I know people who have 4-6 facebook accounts for playing games. So there maybe 500 million "users" according to facebook. It is no 500 million different people. Once you filter out companies and duplicates. You would probably get 3-400 mil different users. Which is still impressive.

And they can only be big brother if you let them. I will admit I have an account, but they don't get my phone or anything like that. I gave them a "disposable" email that I can just stop using and off the web with no way to trace it back to me.
You are not alone. I feel the same way about Facebook. I joined it early on and it truly did serve a grand purpose connecting me with old friends etc. However I also saw the potential for massive personal invasion on all fronts. (as if we don't have that already) I warned, they said 'farewell' and I am now 'out in the cold' real world. FEW if any have chosen to contact me via e-mail unless I write, and then it is considered a hassle by them. I have to think twice every time I begin to weaken almost deciding to re-join!
I know lots of people with multiple accounts. 250 million is a more likely figure and many of those aren't active.
and also allowing their users to email spam and porn offers, and to make it worse they've removed the abuse reporting email address so you have to sign up to report abuse. Great site not.
While 500 million is an amazing number, we must also realize that about 70% of web users are still using it as a read-only medium. Here?s an article that discusses this missing majority.

500 million people doing nothing useful. Now think what could be accomplished if they got together and did something constructive.
We used our BI software to generate an interactive dashboard to display the data concerning Facebook's 500 million users. Now you can visualize it, you can see so much more than just a number!

The dashboard contains 3 visualizations which all show different relationships.

The first, the treemap, shows the number of users in July 2010 in relation to the percentage penetration (number of people on Facebook as a percentage of the country?s population). The size of each individual box within the treemap shows the total number of Facebook users in the country. The strength of the color shows the percentage penetration, with the darkest blue being attributed to a higher percentage of users, and the lightest blue being attributed to the lowest.

The second visualization is the geovisualization, or heat map. We have chosen graduated circles to display the information but you can change it back to the original heatmap format by clicking on ?Rendering Mode? in the bottom left hand corner. Here we see the relationship between the population and the percentage penetration. The size of the graduated circles show proportionately the population size, and the number inside demonstrates the percentage penetration. A very simple but a highly visual representation, the heatmap is probably the best way to get an overall geographical idea of where Facebook?s users are around the world.

Lastly, our third chart is the classic pie chart. We have used the filters to filter out any country with a population of less than 10 million. This gives us a nice overview of the relationship between the percentage penetration and the number of users. We have also chosen to display the percentage penetration measure by size, to make it really clear which countries have a high percentage (USA, UK) and which have a low percentage (India, Mexico).
