Google Docs rolls out mobile editor for Android, iOS
Summary: In a demonstration, the editor---essentially a stripped down version of the desktop version---proved to be quick and able to tweak most documents.
Google Docs on Wednesday launched a new document editor that supports mobile browsers.
In a demonstration, the editor---essentially a stripped down version of the desktop version---proved to be quick and able to tweak most documents. On the go, users are more interested in document browsing and light editing instead of full-blown creation.
Google is supporting Android with Froyo (version 2.2) and iOS devices (versions 3.0 and above). Support for other platforms is on deck.
Jonathan Rochelle, the group product manager at Google Docs, said the editor is designed to work on any phone, feature collaboration and voice transcription on Android. Rochelle said that a mobile editor was a big feature request from customers. These customers were looking to get away with just carrying an iPad instead of a laptop to view and edit documents.
There is an option to switch over to the desktop version of the Google Docs editor, but the performance does lag.
