Google+: Overall visits decreases, male users increase

Summary: Traffic for Google+ has decreased slightly, but it's not time to spell out the end of the site just yet.

SHARE:

Google+ has been around for nearly a month now, still locked down under invite-only mode. Traffic has decreased slightly, but it's not time to spell out the end of the site just yet.

Last week, Experian Hitwise found that Google+ received more than 1.8 million total visits during the week ending July 16, 2011. Approximately 38.37 percent of visits that week came from users aged 25 to 34, and at least 57% of all users were male.

Here's the update for Google+ traffic for the week ending July 23, 2011:

  • Received more than 1.79 million total visits last week (a three percent decrease)
  • 59 percent of upstream traffic came from other Google properties
  • 40 percent of upstream traffic came from search engines (an eight percent increase)
  • 37 percent of upstream traffic came from Google.com
  • 15.59 percent of upstream traffic came from Gmail (a nine percent increase)
  • Average time spent on the site was down by 10 percent from five minutes and 50 seconds to five minutes and 15 seconds
  • 59 percent of visits are from males (a four percent increase)
  • 33 percent of visits are from users age 25-34 for the four weeks ending July 23rd

Note that this data does not include mobile or third-party application traffic, and it represents U.S. visitors only.

Sure, traffic has decreased slightly and the average time spent on the site has diminished by a matter of seconds. There are a few reasons that can easily answer for that. The biggest one is that most Google+ users are likely more familiar with the site now, and that initial allure and mystery is gone for anyone who has already received an invite. Thus, of course users are not going to check as often and for as long.

Once Google+ goes full on public, then we can expect numbers to seriously jump.

Frankly, I am pleased with how Google+ works by and large.

Although, I am finding members of my family resistant to crossing-over, mostly the fear factor.

Everyone is 'jittery' with security issues that plague Facebook so the awareness is up but they are in a comfort zone of familiarity which is hard to break.

Still, Google+ is a better solution for maintaining relationships than Facebook.

    I'll keep trying to educate.

and that beeing that Google+ is the inferior product, and that abandoning Facebook to apease your preference for open source is not worth the "downgrade"?

        @Mister Spock
You assume that all believe that Google+ is inferior, then 15 million + users are wrong. You may want to speak with the Captain on that logic.

This is funny you are wrong on both accounts. Google+ is not inferior to facebook and it is not open source.

undying love for all things Google (cause they use open source and he's pro open source) so Google has to be the better of the 2.

Facebook uses open source but they don't promote that fact as it's reason for existence, instead just what they use it to run Facebook on.

Google is suposedly all about open source.

Definately a sausage fest from what I've seen. Fun to mess around with for a few days but I found myself visiting less and going back to Facebook and Twitter.

Google+ still doesn't have all the features Facebook has, but since adding them is promised by google I think we can expect the field being leveled in the near future. Timing is very important though, I hope Google got things under control.

Something must be seriously wrong today... We're talking about a non-Apple product and ZDnet isn't forecasting "the death of"... already?

it will be a long term battle for google+. Look at how Chrome pick up users in 3 years. Google+ will gradually catch up FB. The key is Google have most talented people and also some very strong products to support G+, like Gmail, Search, Youtube, Android, chrome and even Map..... Challenges are ahead for sure, but i believe google was born for challenges.

Can't see it ever catching up with Facebook.

Google+ looks too techie, and Google haven't done a particularly good job of advertising its strengths. From what I've read, it has more in common with twitter in that you can add anyone - friends, celebrities, family - and differentiate between them all with the circles feature; yet everyone's (including me in this post) comparing it to Facebook.

I think it's going to end up falling between two stools.

@windypops Who said that having the less intellectually fortunate flock to G+ would be a good thing? Im all for elitism and FB is the cesspool of the internet as it is, not a thing to strive for.

  • RE: Google : Overall visits decreases, male users increase

The numbers may jump when it goes public, but it will still die off in terms of actual use.

I really don't see the general populace who are used to Facebook switching to G+. It's got neat ideas, but it comes down to the users' real-life relationships. If their real social circles are not doing it, they'll stay where they are.

    It's that simple.
