Howard Stern renews with Sirius: From satellite to app radio?

Howard Stern renews with Sirius: From satellite to app radio?

Summary: Howard Stern is going to sign up for another five years with Sirius XM and the move opens up a few app possibilities. Sirius XM could ultimately ditch that pricey satellite infrastructure.

SHARE:

Howard Stern on Thursday announced that he was going to sign up for another five years with Sirius XM and the move opens up a few app possibilities.

On his radio show, Stern said Sirius was the best place for him. The move is likely to allay fears that Sirius would lose a big chunk of subscribers---including me---if Stern left. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but are likely to wind up in a regulatory filing.

The more interesting wrinkle with the Stern deal is that his show will now be available on the Sirius XM app, which is available on various platforms such as the Apple's iPhone, Android devices and the BlackBerry. There was a lot of talk about Stern going to Apple, an idea that was total bunk. But the rough idea is the same: Apps and online distribution are increasingly important to content creators.

Due to contractual hang-ups, Stern wasn't on the Sirius XM app. That reality kept the Sirius XM app from being a must have. With Stern on the Sirius XM app downloads are likely to pick up.

The big picture here is that Sirius XM isn't necessarily about satellite radio anymore. Sirius XM is about content on any platform.

Stern staying with Sirius XM and appearing on mobile apps should accelerate the day where pricey satellites aren't the main distribution method for the company.

I didn't think anyone still listened to Howard Stern any more. He was ok back in the 90's, but his material got old and repetitive. Every Howard show: "show me your boobs" tee hee. And it still hasn't changed.

How would you know that "it still hasn't changed" if you don't listen? You conservative piece of trash.

if they would release a windows mobile app, I would get it. But I use my phone primarily for buisiness, and the Droid and Iphone wont cut it.

I absolutely must chime in. I have heard for 30 years how the Stern show is nothing but gratuitous nudity and cursing - from people who do not listen to the show. Those who do (pretty much all of them) have to disagree. Howard's show is the best place to go for in-depth interviews with the biggest names and tons of the most creative comedy available. It's not 'safe and clean' but it's creative, intelligent and always very funny.
Frankly, if you think that Stern was ever simply "show me your boobs" tee hee, I doubt you have ever listened to even one complete show.

I love people who havent heard stern on Sirius, or since the 90's for that matter, but still have time in their day to comment on it. Maybe time to revisit your priorities Loverock! The economy sucks and people are struggling all over this country and Sterns show (our show), is pure entertainment and helps the millions of people who listen everyday regardless of the struggles in their lives, just relax and enjoy quality entertainment whenever they get the opportunity. The funny thing is that Stern is so popular that Loverock decided to make the comment no one listens anymore and if that were the case why make a comment at all? Do you often comment on things that are irrelevant in your life? You should start a blog of all things that dont matter in your world Loverlock! Ignorance is not only bliss its hilarious! LOL!

    Stern Fan for Ever!

Your obviously talking it up with some Stern fanboys.. The guys is a shock jock, regardless of the interviews and content... Stern isn't afraid to point out the obvious sometimes in politics and I have even agreed with him on some points, but that's not the real reason people tune in.

  • love Howard

I agree with all the other comments about Stern haters...all people who actually never listen and simply base their opinion with what they saw on the E! Show....which always pandered to teenagers so OF COURSE they would only show the T&A stuff.

  • The best interviewer...PERIOD

Mr. Stern is by far the best interviewer out there. First of all there are no time limits. Second of all there is no censorship. You see someone on Letterman, Leno, or Larry King (yuck) and after 10 minutes you don't care what else is said in the interview, you either fall asleep or turn the channel. The same person will be on Howard (usually before any other show) and after a complete hour with no commercials you find yourself sitting in your PARKED car, riveted to how Howard gets people to talk about their REAL lives and not just what a publicist writes for the stars to say. For you non Stern fans, treat yourself. Find the complete interviews with Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Mike Ditka. Heck anybody really. I promise you will be converted.
