IDC: Android partners see biggest gains in smartphone shipments

By | August 5, 2010, 2:28pm PDT

Summary: In a report released today, IDC said that smartphone makers who have partnered with Google to make Android devices are seeing the greatest growth in the smartphone market.

It was quite a first half of the year for smartphone makers, especially those who’ve partnered with Google to put out Android-powered phones. According to figures released by IDC today, Google’s smartphone partners, including HTC and Samsung, posted the highest year-over-year growth rates in the research firms’s second-quarter smartphone vendor rankings.

The firm notes that four of the top 10 vendors, all of which mostly ship Android phones, saw growth rates of more than 100 percent, with HTC being the top supplier, based on unit shipments. In a statement, IDC senior analyst Kevin Restivo said:

Emerging smartphone suppliers, such as HTC, that are allied closely with Google, gained share at the expense of the historic top smartphone players last quarter. This is largely a result of greater consumer interest in smartphones generally and Android devices in particular.

Overall, the smartphone market grew by 50 percent globally, compared to the previous year. In all, 63 million smartphones were shipped in the second quarter, up from 42 percent a year ago. For the first half of the year, 118.3 million smartphones were shipped, up 54 percent from the 76.8 million shipped during the first half of last year.

And the best is still yet to come.

The second half of 2010 is expected to see some “explosive growth” Yes, more smartphone models will be launched in the second half but, more importantly, the offerings will grow. BlackBerry, Symbian and Microsoft are all slated for an OS refresh, moves that should drive competitive pricing through the holiday season and into 2011.

According to the report, third place Apple is still the one to beat, despite a year-over-year dip in global shipments, which could be the result of anticipation around the launch of the iPhone 4 near the end of the quarter. Despite antenna issues and some backlash on iPhone 4, the company still benefits from high consumer awareness and international expansion that will take the device into 17 countries in the current quarter.

first: there is no yoy decline in global shipments for apple not even in market share. and this quarter shipments and market share will excelerate again. normal seasonality pattern since 2007. a pre-refresh stagnation and an explosion in units and market share with the new version.

second: of all the android handset makers only htc and samung are making a profit. the rest: sony ericsson and the mobile units of lg and motorola are all in the red.

i have no doubt that android will surpase iOS in market share but apple is a hardware maker so these IDC figures here (hardware market share numbers) are the real deal. let's see how 2010 and 2011 will pan out.

my bet: apple, htc and samsung growing, nokia, rim and motorola losing.

If you have facts, post the links, in particular when the author has pretty credible sources. Otherwise your post means nothing.

all numbers are q2 2010, in $

motorola mobile division: operating loss of 109 million
lg mobile division: loss of 101.2 million
sony ericsson (my mistake): a tiny profit of 15,5 million
samsung mobile division: a profit of 533 million
htc: a profit of 268 million

so combined the leading android makers had a profit of 800 million in q2 2010. (and losses of 210 million). for reference apple had a an estimated iphone profit of around 2 bn in q2 2010. and the quarter in which apple's iphone sales are normally accelerating (after the yearly refresh has only just begun).

activating? selling? using?

here is what mr. schmidt really said: " we are activating, selling, using whatever, 200.000 android phones a day" (he really said "whatever"; have a look at the video here: http://www.businessinsider.com/android-revenue-2010-8) his smoke screen comment that has been widely and wrongfully reported starts at 2:30

what does that even mean? using? i would argue apple is "using" millions of iphones every day. what does activating mean? obviously something else than selling. he said: activating, selling, using...

remember google apps. the biggest threat to microsoft? like a lot of things google no one is talking about that anymore.

iFans ahoy!

iFans: Accept that the iPhone has SERIOUS competition, and it's not going to get better. Sure, iPhone had a great run, but the World of smartphones is evolving rapidly, and you just have to accept the fact that the iPhone isn't the awe-inspiring device that it once was; it's part of a whole group of devices that are all pretty much equally-capable.

Oh, I know that I'm going to get plenty of replies from iFans who will bombard me with sales-figures "fragmented Android" stuff, and, you have valid points, but, at some point you have to push your heads out of the sand and recognize that the iPhone is simply no longer king...it shares the throne with a number of other devices. Nobody (other than fanboys) gets a woody when they see your iPhone, anymore.

Just because you don't like what I say, doesn't make me a troll.

Show me where I'm wrong, and I'll retract my comment.

@Economister

Seriously, before you call me a troll, refute any of my points:

1. The iPhone has serious competition
2. Smartphones are evolving rapidly
3. The iPhone isn't the awe-inspiring device that it once was.
4. The iPhone is no long "king", it shares the throne with other equally-capable devices.
5. Nobody gets a woody over an iPhone, anymore.

serve no purpose other than trying to bait Apple fans. You come across as a 10 year old looking for validation that you are/were right. I would hope that we all try to keep the discussion at a slightly higher level.
