Updated: Oracle CEO Larry Ellison was spreading the love for his competitors on the company's third quarter conference call.

Notably, Ellison said Oracle replaced Red Hat for Linux support at Yahoo. Oracle's Linux support, which is aimed at undercutting Red Hat, is off to a solid start with Dell, Hewlett-Packard and CDW reselling service. Ellison also noted that Oracle has sold some large enterprise contracts in the $500,000 range.

Ellison didn't disclose sales for Oracle's Linux business, but indicated he was confident. "Oracle has displaced Red Hat at Yahoo and numerous other customer sites as their Linux support supplier. That is extremely important and this is just the beginning," said Ellison, referring to the Linux support business. "We're not going to build it overnight, but we will build it."

On other topics, Ellison ripped SAP--a quarterly occurrence--and its strategy to target the midmarket with A1S. "We have a good chance to catch and surpass SAP in the applications business," said Ellison.

Update: SeekingAlpha conference call transcript is now available.  It's definitely worth a read.

  • Oracle Linux certification

One of Red Hat's arguments supporting the assertion that the company could fend off Oracle was that Oracle's version of Red hat wasn't certified. I know the discussion in this article was about service, but selling the software is the essential part of the Linux business, of course.

  • Apparently this isn't true...

...it might be a good idea if one of you ZDNet folks called Yahoo.

    • Is there a link to back up your claim?

      • Not one I'm at liberty to post...

...but, I repeat, I think Larry Dignan should check with Yahoo.

        • Beat me to it

I was going to post that same link. Clearly this is Larry being very "liberal" with the truth, bending it, or however a spin-doctor would wish to term it. Naturally when he said they "replaced Red Hat" he wasn't intentionally being misleading -- knowing full well that any corrections would be given an asterisk to the already sensational headlines that Oracle is taking all of Red Hat's business. Nah, he wouldn't do that.
