Blurring the line between what should be called an HDTV with a touch screen and a tablet, the 55-inch Mondopad HD tablet for cloud-based video conferencing has been unveiled.
The idea for labeling such a product as a “tablet” probably stems from the fact that this machine combines intuitive and collaborative apps with Vidtel’s video conferencing service via the cloud. (However, an HDTV can also run apps these days too…)
Basically, it’s a tricked-out, high-tech whiteboard with a video camera. That’s no joke. There actually is a “Whiteboard Wizard” function that allows users form a “virtual multi-party whiteboard session” and the notes can all be saved. (That last part actually sounds very useful.)
And thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi, the Mondopad can also double as a wireless access point so participants can easily deliver documents to the display without having to log into the local network. Some of the supported documents include the usual bunch: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, PDF, JPGs, etc.
Spec-wise, the Mondopad sports a full HD 1080p resolution on that massive LCD multi-touch display. It’s also ready for a lengthy list of digital and analog inputs: HDMI, VESA Analog PC, Component, Composite, S-Video, analog audio in/out, RS 232 and multiple USB ports. Naturally, there is a 720p integrated video camera with four microphones along with a voice-optimized sound bar for improved dialogue clarity.
Mondopad’s creators promise that not only will the wall tablet be easy to use, but it will also be “easy on the wallet.” That is, if you have $5,949 extra in your budget. Don’t forget about the $49 monthly fee for video conferencing connections. Accessories (which could be considered necessary with a screen this large) including the wall mount, mobile cart and floor stand are all sold separately.
