Motorola Xoom sales tepid; Production cuts next?

By | March 11, 2011, 5:09am PST

With Apple launching the iPad 2 Friday, Motorola Mobility may be forced to scramble to bolster sales of the Xoom tablet.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek on Friday argued that earnings estimates for Motorola Mobility are too high for the second quarter and 2011 because sales of the Xoom and Atrix haven’t lived up to expectations.

Misek said:

Xoom sales have been underwhelming. While marketing has just started we believe MMI will likely have to cut production if it already has not done so. We believe the device has been a bit buggy and did not meet the magic price point of $500. We believe management knows this and is hurrying development and production of lower cost tablets. Importantly we believe management will likely have to make the painful decision to accept little to no margin initially in order to match iPad 2’s wholesale pricing.

On the Atrix front Misek noted that the BlackBerry Torch is outselling the Atrix at AT&T.

We’ll focus on the Xoom for the moment. Misek’s take on tepid Xoom sales backs up what we’ve been hearing anecdotally. We’ve heard of a handful of folks that have returned the Xoom. The frequent complaint is that the Android 3.0 Honeycomb software is buggy and prone to crashes. Expectations are simply higher given the Xoom’s price.

Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research, also indicated that Google’s perpetual beta approach doesn’t fly for electronics. Google’s approach works for free services, but expectations are different for a tablet that can run you $800. “The consumer is unforgiving,” said Chowdhry in a research note.

Reviews of the Xoom have also been tepid. The good news is that Xoom prices will come down because Motorola Mobility is going to have to move inventory.

I am new to blog subscriptions and I am looking for an easy reader that is nice and organized that lets me view my blogs from my homepage or has a little scrollbox that is always up on the side of the computer screen. I started to use bloglines but it is really unorganized with all the blog names lined up on the side. Thanks a lot!.

Motorola Xoom is DOOMED.
@Brick Tamland : you mean Xoomed.

Reality-wise, Motorola created too much expectation and forgot Honeycomb was a point release.

What amazes me the most is how ZDNET uses different approaches depending on OS.

If it's Microsoft and Windows Phone 7, then sales are "just starting to pick up" as consumers "have been quite interested on the platform".

But if it's Apple and iPad2. "Don't expect the massive success of the iPad with the iPad2". "This is only an incremental update". "No mayor value is seen by the customer by the update".

It appears the doom falls on manufacturers and OEMs when they dare not to choose the Microsoft way. But if they do, and see no results, it's because the thing needs time.

@cosuna The honeycomb previews looked great, but all the pieces just arent there yet to make for a solid competitor to iFad.

Lack of flash, having to send the unit back for 4G upgrade, too pricey, Honeycomb bugs, its just too early to release this.

Im holding out, or perhaps I'll pickup a used iFad 1.
@otaddy

I agree with your other points, but I am not so sure about the lack of Flash being a problem. Lack of Flash has certainly not hampered sales of iPads.

No Flash
Hameiri 14th Mar 2011
@ptorning Yes you are right, the iPad does not have Flash. For some of us, that means we won't buy it.

I want a tablet, but I want it to run as many videos as it can. So I want flash, and I'm waiting for the Xoom to be able to run it.

But, I'm also waiting for the Wi-Fi only version. I don't want a contract, and I can run it from my phone's hotspot.

So...... i'm waiting.

@Hameiri Apple's iPad 2 Wi-Fi only model just costs $499, while for a contract free Motorola Xoom, the price is $800. The iPad 2 doesn't have Flash, but you should enter the Adobe website, they even don't use Flash on their newest technology based on Javascript and HTML5.
http://www.adobe.com/special/futureofdigital/ I like Flash, but it's something I've used for more than 12 years, it's time to open web standards and give people better web experiences based on W3C recommendations. iPad 2 web browser experience is better than if you had Flash on new websites.

Software updates are starting now and likely we will see the wifi only version within a few weeks so it will improve I am sure. Also, I had to go to 3 stores to find one so they can't be that bad.

Oh and on ebay there were several going for the high $700's range so maybe we should wait until Motorola actually tells us rather than speculate.

@Peter Perry

The fact that you had to go to 3 stores proves nothing, you first need to know how many units each store had in inventory. Maybe each store had only 10 units for sale. The headlines will be that it's selling out when in actuality sales a very low.

@dave95.

Why should Peter take the advice of a person who cannot even spell the word 'units' correctly?
I love reading personal blogs, Mommy blogs, etc. . . What is the best way to find these types of blogs online? The best method I have is just following favorites people have - going to one bloggers "favorites" then the next bloggers favorites, and so forth.. . I've tried Google Blogsearch but all that gives me is old news articles, etc. Nothing personal at all.. . How do you search for personal blogs?

@Peter Perry And there are several iPad2s going for $1,000 or more... So if you want to use eBay prices as your guide it looks like iPad2 is kicking Xoom's butt.

I'd be quite interested in the Xoom vs iPad2 sales figures... I'd trust Motorola not to pull a Samsung and artificially inflate the sales numbers (like Samsung did with the Tab). I have a feeling that the iPad2 numbers will be much higher than the Xoom despite the few differing specs and Xoom's "promiseware".
@athynz But the comparison should be between the iPad2 with 32 gigs and 3g correct? Not the low end $499.
@mrxxxman. Correct, but everyone wants to compare Apples to Oranges.

@mrxxxman Sort of. Since there's only one model of the Xoom is available, and its got 3G and 32GB of Flash it seems reasonable to compare its PRICE to the iPad 3G/32GB model. But as far as sales, well I'm afraid I don't agree there. If Motorola doesn't want to offer multiple models with differing flash sizes because they've got a (not yet working) SD card slot, then it seems to me you should compare their volume vs. all of Apple's wifi models. And if Motorola couldn't get the Wifi-only model out the door so those who wanted a Wifi-only Xoom have to buy the 3G model, then again, I'm afraid you'll have to live with the volumes vs. both Wifi+3G iPads. Stupid really since its been known for some time that more than half of the iPads sold are wifi-only models, and the most popular model of iPad is the cheapest one with only 16GB of Flash. Motorola should have known better.

It runs Android.. yikes!
@Hasam1991 I love Android better than iOS even with the occasional force closing because it's a superior OS in almost every other area. That's more than worth it to deal with a few force closing. Besides, the software will get better. It's the hardware that is amazing and better than iPad2.
@Hasam1991 Android is improving...and it needs improving..Honeycomb looks great. I also like the Google Chrome to phone plugin.
@hjenkins1 No I think what Moto will do is shift as quickly as possible to introduce the wifi only and increase production on the low end before they ever think of lowering the price of their high end model.
But...but....it runs Linux!

@samalie Indeed. I hope their brains have melted. I always find interesting their talent of saying nothing with so many words.

As for the article: lets hope that prices will go down and consumers get happy. I am curious about the HP Tablets this year. They are stated to be cheaper...

Dead? Depends
Robert Hahn 11th Mar 2011
Whether they die depends a lot on how smartly they play this tablet deal, and in particular whether they bet the company on it.

They aren't doing badly at all in the phone business. They have good market share, they're making money, it's a nice business.

What could kill them is turning too much cash into too many parts that get assembled into too many XOOMS that go unsold... until they get footballed on Woot for 10 cents a pound.

It's a tough call. If they don't make enough XOOMs, they could miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime. Too many, and they die. I don't envy the people who have to decide how many XOOMs to make for next quarter. But if it were me, I'd err on the side of staying in business.
@Robert Hahn
I am using their flagship phone Atrix 4g for the past 2 weeks and I found MotoBlur is their problem, and I dont know why Motorola is still sucking to MotoBlur, they should have tied up with HTC and made SenseUI available for their phones. As long as Verizon pushes them they are ok, otherwise they are doomed. HTC, Samsung and even LG phones UX is much better than Motorola.
