Palm loses webOS user interface design lead Matias Duarte, report says

By | May 27, 2010, 6:15am PDT

Summary: Palm has lost Matias Duarte, the man responsible for leading the team that designed its webOS user interface, according to a new report.

Newly-acquired mobile company Palm has lost Matias Duarte, the man responsible for leading the team that designed its webOS user interface, according to a new report.

Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski reports that Duarte has been hired by Palm rival Google.

Duarte was officially the senior director of human interface and user experience at Palm. If Paczkowski’s report is true — he cites “multiple sources” but no further details — it shows that HP’s acquisition of the company is finally beginning to set in.

Before arriving at Palm in 2007, Duarte was design chief at wireless company Helio and at Danger.

HP’s attraction to Palm is no doubt its webOS operating system, so it’s curious that one of the folks leading the charge would leave so soon — much less to a rival platform, Google Android.

Duarte’s departure doesn’t offer much hope for HP’s acquisition of Palm. Most folks joined Palm to challenge Apple; now that they’re part of a bigger company, it’s now a question of whether they’ll get sucked into the corporate black hole — or worse, continue to defect toward the rapidly innovating Android platform.

Get the fact straight. HP owns the brand, so they are the ones that lost the talent.
Why is ZDnet allowing blatant advertisements in the comments of your articles? Does this mean that you don't give a damn about the comments? I think maybe it does, when after 3 hours you still haven't removed the ad.
I hope Palm survives and continues innovating with it's WebOS. All Palm was missing was the capital, now it has it so let's see what they do now.

I was an avid Palm user until a few years ago when I had to change, kicking and screaming, to Windows Mobile. At the time, Palm was still developing it's WebOS and the PalmOS was just old and lacked many features I needed.

Now Palm has a great OS, all they need to do is capitalize on it and take it to the next level. The Palm Pre/Pre Plus needs updated hardware (1GHz processor, support for microSD) and we need to have a WebOS tablet with the Palm (not HP) brand on it. This, along with some strong marketing, would increase software development interest in the WebOS platform... thus more quality apps in the Palm app store and the app store is where the game is.

Probably a major loss

There are some exceptionally good design people around - Jonathan Ive comes to mind - who can make a product stand far above the competition. If Matias Duarte is anywhere near the calibre of Ive then HP has made a major balls up by not retaining him.
Great!!! thanks for sharing this information to us!
