According to a News.com report, Intel has developed digital voltage regulators made in standard silicon. Voltage regulators essentially control the amount of energy directed to different computer parts.  The story goes on to say that switching to silicon could improve battery performance by up to 40 minutes on notebooks. The question is, if this next story is true, who the heck cares?  According to a eWeek news report (that came by way of Reuters), "Japanese consumer electronics maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said on Wednesday that it and chip giant Intel Corp. will jointly develop battery technology efficient enough to keep a notebook PC running all day."   All day?  Bring it on!  So, let's see... between that and the new sleep state technology that's coming out in the next version of Windows, our systems should go a week without refueling.  Right?  OK, wishful thinking.

  • Insufficient detail

    Considering as the current voltage regulators are already silicon, this is too garbled to make sense.

    I have a hard time believing that they're proposing to replace the energy-storage devices (inductors and capacitors), and the switching devices are, as noted, already silicon.

    I guess I'll have to wait for journal papers to find out.
