Just after MasterCard and Visa confirmed that they warned U.S. banks about a security breach, now the situation is getting bigger.

Card processor Global Payments has reportedly been struck by a security breach that puts approximately 50,000 cardholders at risk, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company has since halted trading as an investigation gets underway.

Again, just as with the incident involving the world's two largest credit card companies, specific details about the extent of the breach and potential damage have not been revealed.

Word about a "massive" security breach involving MasterCard and Visa as well as non-public alerts to card-issuing banks spread quickly on Friday morning.

In statements published earlier today, both Visa and MasterCard acknowledged that they are investigating incidents in which sensitive, cardholder data might have been compromised at a third-party entity.

Taking a proactive approach while not giving too much away, both credit card companies have affirmed that they have informed account holders that might be potentially at risk.

However, it's not clear if banks will begin reissuing cards to either all or select customers just yet.

    So not only do Visa and Mastercard charge some overpriced fee (2%) for every card-swipe to the company that allows transactions, they're so incompetent that they cannot control their own systems and have to outsource what they do to others?
