In the battle-royal for runtime supremacy between the two 800 lb. gorillas -- .Net and Java -- the vendors of both technologies have taken some liberties in attaching those brand names to technologies that aren't necessarily .Net or Java specific. Realizing the misappropriation of the .Net brand may have been doing more harm than good, Microsoft backpedaled on the way it was attaching the .Net name to many of its products and services and has since, been very judicious in its use of the brand.
