Sun says it's giving Dell an ass-whoopin

Sun's claims that its new Galaxy servers leave market leader (by a huge margin over Sun) Dell in the dust. I guess Sun is feeling confident in its benchmarks and not waiting for the market to validate its findings. The prankster executives at Sun hired a plane to fly a Sun banner over Dell's headquarters and are unleashing an ad campaign (some censored by publications), with themes like 'Dell rhymes with hell.'

It's has beer drinking football fan, in-your-face appeal, and is also a calculated appeal for the attention of CIOs with large budgets. If the products perform as advertised, Dell, as well as HP and IBM, have a product development challenge on their hands.

Quoted in a news.com story, Illuminata analyst Gordon Haff said, "It's probably not possible to be head and shoulders above the competition in the x86 space. There just isn't that much opportunity for being compellingly different. That said, they're nice boxes, with good management features, prices and performance." Maybe he underestimates what Andy Bechtolsheim has done with Sun's new rack mount servers. And, maybe not. Awaiting Michael Dell's response, who won't be easily vanquished or resort to trash talking, and more feedback from the market and users.

  • Sun has always said benchmarks are not valid

Sun has always said benchmarks are not valid.

Unless of course they do well on them.

I guess things have changed since they stopped using their own processors.

    • Does anyone ever agree with benchmark findings?

Seems to everytime I see a benchmark report the immediate responce is "you didn't do it right", "it wasn't opitmized", and of course my favorite, "the other guy is lying".

  • Dell need an ass-whoopin

For the pittyful joke they call support. I'm fortunate I have a lot of experience dealing with people who's first language is not English or American. Unfortunately Dell's support people generally have too little grasp of English to understand the very people they are supposed to be helping. Couple that with the fact they read from a script only makes the farce blacker.

It's about time that companies like Dell were forced to bring the jobs back to America.

  • Sun claims

Well when you've lost most of you're market share, you're a bit more prone to say anything to get back on the radar. I would seriously take their claims with a grain of salt. Anyone familiar with how well Dell engineers their servers knows they are no slackers when it comes to performance or price. I also just read they are now #1 in X86 servers running Linux! Who'd have thought!
