Inventories are under control, capital spending is restrained and capacity utilization rates are gradually improving so the prospects for a decline in the semiconductor market this year have diminished. However, uncertainty surrounds both the short and the long term future of the industry. Gartner's revised semiconductor forecast is examined with a particular emphasis on the NAND flash memory market and how its interplay with the DRAM market is expected to impact top-line semiconductor market growth in the short to medium term. In the long term, the search for the next "killer application" continues.
