Here's the email that Apple CEO Tim Cook sent to employees on word of Steve Jobs passing.

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Tim

Apple's board of directors said:

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

  • Greatness at its peak!

Dude, I soooo admired you. Your passion for what you believed in. You've made an impression in my life. For this I Thank you. Agreeing with you on everything was not a requirement. Very few great minds agree. But you were you till the end. RIP Steve. Lets hope the company you built will honor you for years to come with innovations you could be continually proud of.

I'll be curious to see if Bill Gates issues a statement about Steve Jobs. Despite being competitors they did sit on a stage together.

Anyone who claims that Bill Gates is the Devil incarnate needs to read that.

Very classy, very succint, & insightful: "colleagues, competitors and friends " just says it all right there.

Very devastating news, in all honesty. But we should not forget to celebrate a life well lived, a wholesome life, a man with exceptional vision, determination and work ethic that will continue to inspire generations upon generations.
You are in a better place, Steve.

Ever since buing my first computer, an Apple II, Steve has been my hero. He truly did what he set out to do: he changed the world! Very few people every century achieve this. RIP Steve. I still have my Apple II, and I'll keep it forever.

Steve was only 2 years older than I am, and having grown up with he and his company brings to mind my own mortality as well as his own vision and brilliance.

RIP Steve. Not only did he make people think different, he made things BETTER. I truly hope his attitude of uncompromising forward thinking, his tenacity and devotion, his distaste of poor design and mediocrity and willingness to push boundaries is continued in the way he would have wanted. May his spirit live long at Apple. ???

I think Hollywood will surely make this into a movie, Steve Jobs: The Apple Story.

Steve changed my life, and the lives of many people I know. I'm grateful for his work, his vision, and for the fruits of his relentless drive to excel. Sometimes he pissed me off, but I'm better for his having lived, and I'm sorry he's gone. Requiem in pace, Steve.
