Time names Facebook's Zuckerberg 'Person of the Year'; Should he be?

Summary: Ranting about Time's Person of the Year is an annual ritual. In some respects, Zuckerberg taking the person of the year crown is almost the same as when Time gave "you" the crown.

Time named Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Person of the Year and the move appears to have predictably sparked debate. After all, ranting about Time's Person of the Year is an annual ritual. In some respects, Zuckerberg taking the Person of the Year crown is almost the same as when Time gave "You" the crown in 2006.

But before we get to the reaction, let's give Time a chance. Time in a statement says it has "the most comprehensive portrait of Zuckerberg to date." As if we didn't get enough of Zuck on Oprah and 60 Minutes.

Time also gushes that a billion pieces of content are posted on Facebook a day and it is closing on 600 million users.

Can we give Wikileaks Julian Assange a write-in vote (he was a runner-up)? How about naming the Tea Party group of the year (another runner-up). Maybe Craig Venter for the creating the synthetic cell. How about Chilean miners (yet another runner-up)? Or better yet how about the rescuers or Chilean President Sebastian Roberto Echeñique for rallying a country?

These are the debates Time just loves.

  • If in a field of IT, then it should be Jobs, probably

    iPad changed things much more conceptually this year, while Facebook only got bigger, already being popular as crazy last year.

      @denisrs Wasn't Job's already a Man of the Year?

      @denisrs Get serious! Jobs is a figurehead...chief evangelist at Apple. He does nothing but grind people into the ground to get stuff done. And then...as in the iPhone antenna episode...you see the fallacy of that sort of management. He deserves more to be on America's Funniest Home Videos giving that speach when the wireless services went down.

      About the only good thing an I-pad is for is when my laptop is too big to use when I am dropping Obama off at the white house.

  • NO He Shouldn't

    The voters overwhelmingly picked Julian Assange as Person of The Year, but Time Magazine saw fit to ignore the voters even though Assange won by a landslide on a write-in. Won't ever pick up another issue of Time again.

      @cyberslammer2

      Zuck won because he is responsible for the leak of more private information than Assange.

      I never have picked up a copy of Time, unless it was at the doctor's office. So while I'm quite sure The Zuck shouldn't be person of the year... It also doesn't bother me that he is.

      Who knows... after all this Wikileaks stuff plays out, maybe you'll get your wish and Julian Assange will be person of the year next year. Then again, I'll feel exactly the same way about him as I do The Zuck.
