Verizon to sell Apple iPad starting October 28

By | October 14, 2010, 6:15am PDT

Summary: Apple and Verizon have been rumored to be in talks over the iPhone, but on Thursday they made a different announcement: the iPad is coming to Verizon stores.

While the rumor mill about Apple iPhone coming to Verizon Wireless has kicked into high gear again recently, Apple and Verizon made a surprise announcement on Thursday when they revealed that they had reached a deal for Verizon Wireless stores will begin selling the iPad on October 28.

Apple COO Tim Cook said, “We’re thrilled to be working with Verizon Wireless to get iPad into the hands of even more customers this holiday season. iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before, and together with Verizon Wireless we’re offering an easy way to stay connected wherever you go.”

Verizon COO John Stratton said, “This is the perfect pairing for holiday travels. iPad together with the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G data network allows customers to easily connect on the go wherever they are.”

However, don’t mistake this for an iPad with Verizon’s CDMA 3G chips embedded in it. No, it’s actually the iPad Wi-Fi, which all U.S. Verizon Wireless stores (over 2,000 locations) will be selling in bundles with a Verizon MiFi 2200 Mobile Hotspot. The three configurations will be:

  • iPad 16 GB + MiFi = $630
  • iPad 32 GB + MiFi = $730
  • iPad 64 GB + MiFi = $830

This retail pricing may look familiar. It’s the same as the iPad 3G models that Apple sells with embedded broadband chips and discounted data plans on AT&T.

That means that you’ll pay quite a bit more for the Verizon 3G service ($60/month) than for either the AT&T discount plans for the iPad ($15/mo for 250MB or $25/mo for 2 GB). Of course, you’re also getting a Verizon device that you can use to connect your laptop, smartphone, and other devices via Wi-Fi. And, you get access to Verizon’s much more widespread 3G network.

But, not to be left out, Verizon will also offer a special monthly access plan to iPad customers for $20/mo for 1 GB of data. The company will also sell the iPad at standard retail price without the bundled MiFi.

While this is not as significant of an announcement as a Verizon 3G (or even better, 4G) iPad would have been, it shows that Verizon and Apple are looking for ways to work together, and so it very well could be the first step toward bringing other Apple products to Verizon’s network.

The other important thing to note here is that this is another sign of Apple’s ubiquitous retail strategy with the iPad, which was originally only available at Apple Stores and Best Buy (in limited quantities). Apple has recently expanded iPad retail sales to Amazon, Target, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and now Verizon Wireless. On Thursday, Apple also announced that AT&T Stores will begin selling the iPad and October 28 as well.

This is terribly over priced! The worst part is that the iPad owners won't realize how badly they are getting screwed over. I bought a laptop for less than the cheapest iPad Verizon is offering.

@Loverock Davidson You can get a laptop with 3GB of ram, 160GB hard drive, and a 15" display for half the price of the iPad. That's no secret. People don't buy iPads because they are comparably priced with laptops. They buy them because they provide something new, unique, and convenient. An iPad is a great complement to a laptop, not a replacement.

@Tiggster

I don't find anything new, unique, and convenient about the iPad. The iPad is not a compliment to a notebook. That would be $600 for the notebook and another $600 for the iPad bringing you up to $1200. That's a lot of money considering the laptop can do the same tasks as the iPad. Almost sounds like the iPad is redundant.

@Tiggster You're right...I have it to complement my laptop...I can read and study for certs in bed, remote desktop to my office machine and work on it, surf the web, without having to worry about battery life or a horrible heat signature that I would have if I had my laptop.

How about doing a search on toasted skin syndrome Lovey...see how many iPad users have that.

@Loverock Davidson So how do you explain the still-explosive sales of the iPad, and projections of 42 million next year?

Will you say iPad is a success then, or continue to be in denial like you've been for iPhone and iPod??

It depends how u use the iPad. With a keyboard and vga connector, it's even a PC replacement

There's cloud apps like Google Docs and virtualization software like ThinServer. This will allow you to bring your "office" to your iPad

@Tiggster Yeah, people love to repeat that "competition is good for users" mantra but it's not true when half of the players in a given market are phoning it in (so to speak.) The half-baked crap being dumped into the market by most of these companies will actually hurt users when they get suckered into buying them. At this point, there are only one or two phones I'd want to own. If there were indeed true competition, with a batch of companies truly trying to compete, not just dumping beta products into the bargain bins in the hopes of snagging the profits of 2-year contracts, then the consumer would benefit. As it stands, not so much.

@Tiggster I'm the same way, I do my best to remain neutral. It's hard, if you communicate with the person the other person dislikes, then you fall out of favor with them! I simple can't dislike a person, just because someone else does, I just can't.

@trickytom3 Or if you want to occupy a fake CIO who is too incompetent to see the value of the iPad....but I guess 4.5 million per quarter, faster adoption than DVD players..

I'll even show you a stat showing that since the iPad announcement notebook numbers have dropped:

The iPad battery is awesome (10 hours +) but instant on is way oversold. My Tablet PC (HP 2730p) with Win7 Pro is instant on as well - I never leave sleep mode even when docking/undocking, and it is up and running just as fast as my iPad. In fact, it re-establishes WiFi faster than my iPad - sleep mode in a modern Win7 notebook/netbook is as "instant on" as iPad or MacBook - it is battery life that is the real dividing line.

@Loverock Davidson I fully agree it's terribly overpriced - the only good thing about VZW's pricing here is the inclusion of the Verizon MiFi 2200 Mobile Hotspot with the price... but even then one would have to pay 3x what AT&T customers pay for data.

It's a neat device IMHO even if overpriced but I have yet to have anyone give me an answer as to what I can do on an iPad that I cannot do on my iPhone.

@Orangy And you're as big an idiot as your screen name...Orangy? What is that, a smurf name? Orangy Smurf???

It makes perfect sense...Microsoft hasn't sold one phone yet....if Apple announces Verizon's iPhone it will stop people in their tracks who are reserving their Windows phone..

You're just too STUPID to see how great a move it would be.

I can't wait until February, I'm gonna be in here laughing at all you morons who keep saying Windows phone is going to be a success...

Steve Jobs won't allow that to happen....Jobs doesn't care about RIM or Android, they are already out...all he can do is cut into their market share...

Jobs wants to destroy Ballmer...and he is going to do it with one announcement.
0 Votes
+ -
@Orangy And to show how moronic you are....it's called smart marketing...

Ballmer announces Windows Phone 7, says it's coming in November...people start to reserve it.

Late October, Jobs announces Verizon iPhone and iPad....people who were disgruntled with AT&T and the iPhone being on it suddenly start holding off to go to Verizon...including those that reserved the Windows 7 Phone. This also includes those on AT&T with the iPhone who are at the end of their contracts or near it who will jump over to Verizon because they were going to go to the Windows 7 Phone, but now that iPhone is going to Verizon they will jump to that.

It's called smart marketing..but you fail to see that.....beat the competitor with an announcement that will cause the consumer to stall and rethink their decision.

Apple is pure genius.

@cyberslammer I think you got something a bit skewed...

iPad: Apple store, AT&T, Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and coming soon Verizon (confirmed per this article as well as the joint VZW/ Apple announcement)

iPhone: Apple Store, Wal-Mart, Best Buy
and coming soon....VERIZON.... The arrival of iPhone at VZW is unconfirmed and nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor at this point in time.

Apple WILL announce the Verizon iPhone before the Windows 7 Phone launch....
Then they'd better hurry up and announce it - the physical launch of WP7 is coming up quickly. But again this is purely an unsubstantiated rumor. It would be cool, yes, but until there is a joint VZW/ Apple announcement then it is not happening.

Steve Ballmer's days as CEO are numbered.
Perhaps but only because of the issues with KIN, The issues with Danger, Inc's Sidekick server fiasco, and that's about it... Windows 7 has been a huge success and if one believes the hype then WP7 will be a success as well - I personally don't think it will be as much of one as the die hard MS fans but I do think it will do fairly well - and it will hardly be the failure you have been predicting.

At no point did I say that WP7 was going to be a success. I was just pointing the flaws in your fan boy logic. If MS comes to market with a good product they are going to sell no matter what Ballmer or Jobs says.

bundling with mifi??? really? No thanks!
If you have an android phone already it would be much easier to just use the wifi-tether and buy a $400 Ipad from Best Buy, and I think it kinda defeats the purpose of having a semi-small, portable tablet if you also have to carry a pocket sized router to get it online.

When will people learn
gtvr 14th Oct 2010
Most iPad customers do not want this to do exactly what a laptop does. They do not want it to complement a laptop (as in, they have to buy both). They want it for its own features, and its different twist on portable computing.
Be careful what you ask for.
