Without 4G pronto, Nokia's Windows Phones are hampered in U.S.

By | December 12, 2011, 11:54am PST

Summary: The buying calculus for Nokia Windows Phones would change dramatically if there was only LTE support.

Nokia is working with Verizon and AT&T on a 4G Long-Term Evolution Lumia 800, but Microsoft’s inability to support it with Windows Phone is a significant hurdle.

CNET News’ Roger Cheng reports that Nokia is testing a Lumia 800 smartphone that can work on LTE. The problem: Windows Phone doesn’t support LTE yet.

This phone would be a lot more interesting with LTE.

The bright side here is that Nokia realizes that time to market is critical and anything it can do to speed up an eventual LTE handset is critical. Today, all LTE phones are powered by Android. At Verizon, which has the most developed 4G LTE network,  anyone who wants speedy service has to stay with Android. Many of us—my Verizon contract just ended—want LTE and would gladly consider another option. In my view, the iPhone would be a no-brainer with LTE, but in the meantime I’d bump Android.

Here’s how the buying calculus works for Nokia Windows Phones today vs. LTE.

Today:

  • Nice phone.
  • No. 2 OS in terms of quality, but market share small.
  • Do I want a two year contract on Microsoft’s platform and a smartphone maker that has been unknown in the U.S.?
  • App selection.
  • 3G network.

Choice today: I have no interest in being a first mover with a Nokia Windows Phone and don’t feel like being on 3G only for two years.

Today if Nokia had LTE:

  • Nice phone.
  • No. 2 OS in terms of quality, but market share small.
  • Fast LTE service.
  • Do I want a two year contract on Microsoft’s platform and a smartphone maker that has been unknown in the U.S.? Maybe if it has the features I want.
  • App selection.

Choice with LTE: If both Android and Windows Phone supported LTE then the buying decision resembles those old Coke-Pepsi bake-off challenges. Windows Phone would win its share after a few force closes from Android. App selection is an issue, but Microsoft has enough (but would really need the SiriusXM app to win me over).

Microsoft hasn’t officially said much about LTE support timing, but the day it launches Nokia better be there with a device on Verizon and AT&T. After all, the clock is ticking. Once Apple hits the market with a LTE iPhone it’s game over and entrenched Android-iOS duopoly for years.

Jesus, if I could get a LTE windows phone (a decent one) from VZW, I would drop my Driod (Lockup just for the hell of it) Charge in a second. I love LTE and I would not pass it up in a future purchase. I am eyeing some more advanced droids out there, but I am doing the wait and see what happens in a couple months.

@jahmekan Im not sure if I would like WP7 better, but an alternative would sure be nice. Maybe I'll give Nexus a try since its pure Android.

We know Apple will release an LTE phone once LTE is ubiquitous. So maybe by next Fall we'll see an LTE iphone.
I thought that Windows mobile phone 7 supported 4G? There is that HTC Radar 4G, or is that not a 4G phone?
@Rick_Kl

WP7 does support what T-Mobile calls 4G, but not LTE the 4G offered by Verizon, and now AT&T. I am guessing they are adding LTE support with Tango the WP7 update coming out this spring, and then it would make sense that they are testing LTE phones now.

Hint: Verizon LTE is NOT 4G

@Shmythey LTE does not meet the minimum requirements to be called 4G. That is why you don't see them calling it 4G in the ads.

ITU definition not relevant
otaddy 13th Dec
@wackoae It's a new radio interface, new all-IP core network. Therefore it qualifies to be called 4G and that's why the carriers and vendors refer to it as such.

The ITU's arbitrary requirements have been superseded by reality. And who cares what they say anyways, my 4G connection is still much faster than 3G.

Likewise, I see plenty of adds from Verizon which mention 4G.
security and reliability. So you're VERY WRONG in stating that it's #2. Second what os do you think AT&T and Verizon are testing the LTE Nokia's with? Thirdly Nokia is not an unknown is the US. They may not have a big smartphone presence but that's not important. They are well know and known for high quality. That's all that will matter, especially because the vast majority of the market still doesn't have smartphones. And todays android smartphone users either dont even know what os their phone has or are very anxious to switch to something different. If Nokia comes out with even half the advertising that the android phones have they'll have no trouble grabbing lots of US market share.

It's possible
otaddy 12th Dec
@Johnny Vegas MS really needs to speed things up. They have an opportunity to grab some market share with an LTE phone now...once the lte iphone comes out, they will have a hard time.

For many of us, we are using Android because its the only 4G game in town...

Windows Phone is #1! Yay Windows Phone! It's the bestest most wonderfulest phone OS ever!

C'mon, Microsoft has an ad budget that's a 9- or 10-digit number. Why do we have to put up with you trying to spam the forums for free? ZDNet ought to charge you for posting ads.
@Robert Hahn I have a Windows phone; and it IS better!

@dveed ... What Anti-Virus do you use on it?

Just make sure you don't use it for any financial transactions.

Android does not need AV.

I've been using Linux for 9 years and I would avoid using Windows for financial transactions or online banking like the plague. Any Windows is not secure. -- their source code is not secure, there's more profit in it for them that way.
@Robert Hahn
Windows phone is by far the most #1 OS for quality. What shill wrote this garbage?
@Joe. Considering the recentl spate of malware, spyware and other nasties found in 'droid based devices, I'd be VERY cautious about making claims that 'droid is immune to malware.

And asking what anti-malware a user of a phone with no known malware (to date) is using? That's just silly.

All computing devices do/will have malware/vulnerability issues at some point. Even Linux. Believing otherwise is just pure stupidity.

@Joe.Smetona It is android that is increasingly needing some kind of end point protection - note I do not use the term "anti-virus" because almost all malware these days (even on Windows PC's) are NOT viruses. But there have been a number of news items of late related to malware on Android and yes, iPhone too. With a much smaller market share than iOS or Android, Windows phone is currently the smaller and less attractive target for the bad guys.

The Apple Vs Windows Vs Linux flame wars are soooooo, sooooo old. Give it a rest.

@cornpie ... Android has not shown any indication of falling sales due to the malware accusations provided by the shills here. It's because what is there, is a result of owners installing apps from non trusted sources. The Android uses the Linux kernel, so access to high level operations is limited the same way my Linux is. And, I've been using Linux for 9 years, without AV and without any issues. I don't install programs from untrusted sources. I'm sure any complaint about Android having spyware or abhorrent operation is quickly met by "it's not an approve app" by the customer service department.

If you study their responses, it becomes apparent they are operating as "mini propaganda artists", targeting the less informed or non-technical audience with misinformation, especially attacking WalMart, which is proof positive they are shilling. Everything I've seen regarding Android had to do with rogue apps being installed. If people want to do that, they are trusting the application provider for quality. If the trust is misplaced, they are going to suffer to some degree. All the shills addressed know that, but in the effort to get more bang for the buck are trying to make more of it for theatrical purposes -the penalty is disinformation to some of the readers. Their propaganda techniques are as old as dirt.

As far as some external program to help with this, I don't see the need because it's not going to stop user operations that were initially approved by the user. It the menacing operation is spyware, or tracking, the customer may even want to put up with it because they like or want to keep the app.

As far as flame wars, Microsoft is mounting an all out media blitz to sell their smartphones. Windows phone is not going to be any better designed than their other operating systems. If you carefully look at these posts and especially Ed Bott's articles and their posts, they are just infomercials. It's just like watching NCIS LA and seeing Windows logos and phones shoved in your face every 5 minutes. It's distracting and so very obvious. Most quality programming disguises the manufacturer or won't accept inserting that type of paid advertising into a TV series. Microsoft always takes the low road. I have had many, many non-offensive posts inexplicably deleted on ZDNet because they hit sensitive nerves. ZDNet and some posters are totally aligned with promoting Microsoft.
@Robert Hahn I'm an Android user but for my 2nd phone bought an HTC Radar WP7.5 a few days ago. It's been just a few days but I've fallen in love with the OS. It's smooth, elegant, simple and intuitive!

@Johnny Vegas ... But, funny, when I see a Walmart sales circular, all they have is one page of smartphones. And all nine are Android. Walmart is no. 1 in the Fortune 500, second to none. I'm sure they know what they are doing avoiding Microsoft completely.
@Joe.Smetona
funny you're enjoying your "malwared" phone, the worst ever
@Joe.Smetona - Wal Mart ... you mean the retail superstore chain that focuses entirely on offering the cheapest products possible at the lowest prices possible? The same WalMart that discontinued sales of PC's preinstalled with Linux because even WalMart's customers didn't buy them?

Right.

Android malware.
Joe.Smetona Updated - 13th Dec
@Bitcrazed and ozinanoypi ...

It's entertaining to see these articles expounding the little Microsoft train that could.

Yes, Nokia will be the big player says ZDNet and the resident shills. I've never seen any store selling Microsoft smartphones. None. Can anyone remember seeing Microsoft phones being sold anywhere? If I wanted a MS phone, I would have no idea where to even go and buy one. They are that unpopular.

Yep, and WalMart is such a loser store, selling inferior products like Stanley Tools, Black and Decker power tools, Panasonic and Sony large screen TV's. And to add insult to injury, their annual revenue is $224 Billion and they are no. 1 on the Fortune 500. But Microsoft isn't interested in them to sell their phones, they are a cheap store and sell cheap items. Give me a break! happy

And your idea of malware must be pretty funny. Anyone with common sense knows Android is Linux secure and doesn't get self-infected like Windows. Microsoft users are buying Androids and senselessly installing rogue apps like they do on Windows. Unfortunately the electronic cure for stupid hasn't been invented yet. But you both are aware of that.
@Joe.Smetona
You really don't know how badly you just put down Android... First off just look up shoppers of Walmart... Fits in with all the Droid/Linux crowd right? Secondly Walmart sells only cheap crappy products for pennies and people buy it because everyone is poor. Of course they want cheap flimsy crap so go Android... You are a tool.

@Watchmen247 A company rating and review website, Glassdoor.com, regularly quizzes employees of tech companies how they feel about their current CEO asking: ???Do you approve of the way your CEO is leading the company???? Unfortunately for Steve Ballmer, Microsoft employees gave him the lowest approval rating of any tech company.

Microsoft employees gave Ballmer a 40% approval rating which is down from last years 46%. This is not good news for Ballmer who has already been on the board of directors??? naughty list after the failure of the Kin. In 2008, Ballmer said he would retire in 10 years ??? with his declining approval rating and recent Kin failure ??? another set of mistakes could move that retirement forward a few years.

4G is still a marketing gimmick
paferg Updated - 12th Dec
that's important to a minority of people. Few people in the US know what 4G even means, and most of the people who do go looking for a 4G phone most likely do so because of the marketing hype more than because they actually understand its value. 4G/LTE is still a tradeoff between speed and battery life, and until phone makers can solve that issue, it's unlikely to gain mainstream traction. These phones have a serious hill to climb, but their lack of 4G is a minor consideration. A year from now, that may be different.
@paferg All 4G means is that you hit your low but expensive data cap faster. happy
@jgm@...

This.

Unless Verizon is going to raise their data cap, there is no incentive for me to buy a "4G" phone. I am currently rationing my "4G LTE" MiFi because I'm on pace to go over the 5GB limit.

Incidentally, Netflix works perfectly on my 3G HTC Trophy, but I try not to use it because of the 2 GB cap on my phone.

If Verizon lifts their data caps, then I will jump on the LTE bandwagon. Until then, LTE just offers me a fast track to spend more money on their network and little more.
@Rich Miles So Verizon has already raised it.
@paferg I agree...normal average joe consumers have NO IDEA what LTE is. It just not important.

Microsoft and Apple are playing it safe, adopt it when it matters. Let the others bleed on LTE until all of the kinks are worked out and the coverage is better.
@paferg I totally agree. This kind of discussion is irrelevant for the majority of the market.
@paferg
I agree. 4G and dual-core processor phones are nothing but marketing gimmicks for ignorant people. Both battery suckers and unnecessary, at least at this point in time. 4G coverage is terrible where I live and work (Toronto).
@kris_stapley@...

Talking of ignorant people who believe all the BS+FUD spewed by Apple concerning battery life:
1) it is a proven fact that a multicore CPU trumps a single-core CPU in terms of battery power consumption.
2) It is a proven fact that a multicore CPU trumps a single-core CPU in terms of computational speed.
3) It is a proven fact that a quad-core CPU trumps a dual-core CPU in terms of battery power consumption.
4) It is a proven fact that a quad-core CPU trumps a dual-core CPU in terms of computational speed.

Rationale?
Think of battery energy spent as a function of time as well. If a penta-core (that's five cores of CPU in addition to the GPU multi-cores) CPU such as the Nvidia Tegra3 using state-of-the-art power management techniques can perform in 1/4th or 1/5th the time required to accomplish the exact same task on a single core, while consuming the equivalent, or less power than the single-core counterpart, then the effective power consumption is 1/5th that of the single core.

Translation for ignorant people: The Tegra3 penta-core can use 1/4th the power of any existing single core CPU, such as the obsolete Apple A4 CPU.

But like you said, only ignorant people are gullible and will believe otherwise.

Proof #1:

NVIDIA: Quad core can actually use less power than dual core
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/nvidia-quad-core-can-actually-use-less-power-than-dual-core/46478
More cores, less power drain

Last month, as TI and Qualcomm were announcing their dual core chips that will come out later this year to match the Tegra 2, NVIDIA unveiled its quad core chips under the code name Project Kal-El. I talked to NVIDIA Director of Technical Marketing Nick Stam at CTIA and he said tablets running NVIDIA quad core chips are on track to arrive on tablets in August and on smartphones before the end of the year.

However, when pressed about what quad core will mean for battery life ??? a major concern for the average user ??? Stam remarked that quad core can actually be better for battery life than dual core. And, he said the current dual core ARM chips can be better on battery life than their single core counterparts.

The reason that???s the case, according to Stam, is that when an application is properly multi-threaded and the workload is spread across two CPUs, it keeps the voltage and frequency of the CPUs lower on both cores. However, the same workload on one CPU would max out the voltage and frequency on the CPU and when the CPU gets maxed out, it runs hotter and that???s when it draws a lot more power. Take a look at the two charts below for a visual on this concept (you can click the images for a larger view).

Proof #2:
Google iphone 4s battery problems and witness the flurry of issues with a mere dual-core A5 CPU. But the problem isn't the multicore. It's Apple ineptitude with multicore and Flash that's causing all this brouhaha. And sometimes I wonder if it's not intentional? Apple is great at deception. Actually, it's the #1 best at that.

Thus it is you and the likes of you that are gullible and fall for marketing gimmicks which only works on ignorant people believing in Steve Jobs' RDF.

My VZW contact is up in February. My current phone is giving up the ghost and I'm just hoping it makes it until February. I want a Windows Phone, but only have one choice on VZW. I know VZW wants to only bring on phones that are LTE capable. I don't have access to LTE where I am now and probably won't for a year based on their most likely rollout. So even though it's very nice that Nokia is testing phones with VZW on LTE, it really won't matter to me anyway. I won't see any Windows Phone on VZW other than their current offering, and VZW won't release a Nokia phone until it has LTE. I'll get to choose the one WP7 phone VZW has or go with Android/iOS.

I really wish I had a viable choice on my personal time frame.

Go with LTE - especially as it quite likely may get to you early.
Then you have at least a year + of your contract with high speed.

Since your're aware of loneliness, perhaps it is you that is lonely?

While I enjoy my Samsung Galaxy S2 with LTE speed!

Now how would you know LTE sucks in Toronto? Which 4G phone do you have? Or are you just trollin'?

Instead why not try it? Once you experience speed, there is no coming back.

I don't care about 4G. In the midwest I get pretty good service on AT&T. But I need a phone with 32+ gigs of space and the ability to play Audible books. I'm not going to carry around an iPod just for Audible books, I might as well just get an iPhone (which is what I currently have). When I can get a phone large enough for my music collection and can play Audible books, I'll look at Windows Phone 7. until then, its just a brick.
@A Gray Audible is already developping their WP7 app. Nokia Lumia 900 will have 32gb version.
@andrea.barbera@..
or just get an iPhone 4S with 64Gb of love built in..
@paferg, you have summed it up perfectly. This story is basically pandering to the technogeeks and the telecommunications providers rather than the real customers.

"4G/LTE is still a tradeoff between speed and battery life, and until phone makers can solve that issue, it's unlikely to gain mainstream traction. "

Telecommunications companies have invested big in 4G/LTE and want the customer to use it so they get return on their investment. However it clearly is going to be a real issue to battery lifetime and this needs to be sorted out first. If they can convince one or two telephone manufacturers to adopt it then there will be a tech geek drive to have the latest 4G capable phone. I hope telephone providers don't buckle under the pressure and start deploying before this issue is fixed. It is all well and good for telco's to push this but you know the telco's will blame the telephone manufacturers when the customer complaints start to roll in.
