Talk about serendipity. Just when I was lashing NBC executives with a wet noodle for finding scapegoats and planning to take until 2009 to fix its problems (2009? We'll be on Web 4.0 by then... or will that be XP Service Pack 5?), Ze Frank comes out with a show that the ailing media giant's top brass should watch (it wouldn't hurt the other media giants to pay attention either). Frank starts out with a bit of media satire (which is just as important for the brass to listen to as the rest of the video) and then, with some great tips, spends the rest of the show deputizing his audience into an army of self-directing show producers (aka: Ze Frank clones). But, it's the bit at the beginning that hurts most. Said Frank:

Now that you've mastered the basics, it's time for Volume II of the ins and outs of video blogging. For years, traditional media.....sorry...old media.......no.....dirty media has tried to sell us things that "looked good" and "were interesting." Luckily, with the dawning of video blogging, there's a cheap and fast alternative to making media that looks cheap and fast.  While dirty media is stuck telling stories, video blogging is about connecting with people.

But it's doubtful that the entertainment confab will ever get it.  And of course, their plight is never their fault. It's something that's "out of their control." Oh, and if you're looking for part 1, here it is. I guess I'm not the only fan of Sennheiser's ew100 wireless gear. Oh, and we're glad to see that things between Frank and Google are all ducky.

  • Old media = dinosaur

The creaky dinosaurs who run most old media empires just don't get it. They're like the newspaper publishers who think that just because they assigned someone to publish a blog, that this is enough evidence that they "get" the Internet and are now riding the leading edge.

It's another reason why so-called traditional media is gradually ceding its place as an influencer of cultural direction. By 2009, it will no longer matter. Timelines work a little differently in an Internet-enabled world than they did when there were only three networks, and we all watched TV at 6 and 11 to find out what was going on.
