Apple copies a bunch of features from Android, calls it iOS5 (Updated)

By | June 6, 2011, 1:14pm PDT

Summary: iOS5 was announced today. In this article we run down the top 10 features of iOS5 and see how original and innovative they are compared to Apple’s main competition: Android.

Today at WWDC 2011, Steve Jobs took the wraps off iOS5, the next major release of the operating system used by iPhones, iPod Touch, and iPads. According to Apple, iOS5 has over 200 new user features and 1500 new developer APIs. But how many of these are really new?

Apple is known for their innovation, and for suing other companies that copy (or as they put it, “steal“) ideas from them. So we were curious to see how iOS5’s features stacked up in the originality department. In particular, we looked at the 10 main user features highlighted during the keynote today and compared them to features in iOS’s main competition, Android.

1. Notifications. In iOS5 notifications will appear at the top of your screen and you can drag the bar down to see all the notifications in one place.

Original? Definitely not. Android has had that since version 1.0. Recently they improved it in Android 3 so developers can make rich notifications that are more than just text and an image. So iOS5 notifications have caught up to Android 1.0 notifications. The only original part is integration of notifications into the lock screen. Some 3rd party apps provide that for Android but it’s not built-in.

2. Newsstand. Now you can subscribe to magazines and newspapers and have updates downloaded in the background.

Original? So-so. Android relies on programs that are not part of the core operating system to view content, in order to allow 3rd parties to compete against each other. Android apps, including the Market, are still catching up on subscription and in-app purchases. But the OS has had background updates and sync for quite some time. The nice thing about the Android story is that the APIs for this are public.

3. Twitter. Apple has integrated Twitter into the operating system and its major applications. Whether you like it or not.

Original? Absolutely. Nobody else is stupid enough to do this.

Seriously, Android has these standard messages called “Intents” so that if your app wants to have a Share button it sends out an Intent indicating what it’s trying to do. The OS will go out and find all the apps that can do Sharing and give the user a list of them to pick from. That can include Twitter, Facebook, SMS, GTalk, and whatever else you have installed. Even social media apps that weren’t invented yet when the program was written can be supported.

iOS5 provides single sign-on for Twitter. Android does the same, but for any application. It lets the developer write an account manager for single sign-on for any service you can think of including Twitter, Google mail, Exchange, and more.

@Ed Burnette You don't understand. If Apple is announcing it, then it must be magical and revolutionary, no matter it existed years ago. iFanBoys will tell you that "the way" Apple has done all that accounts for a lot of originality.

So I wonder what a Apple will do.

Eventually they will be forced into one of the following scenarios:

a) Pay up a lot of dough
b) Cancel the IOS 5 release from all users (bad PR)
c) Compromise and let others use their IP.

None of them are good.

This is Apple admitting defeat, recognizing Android is better. As they are now following the leader and not leading anything.

Like I said before, Apple's system is two years behind the curve. To late to recover now.

@Uralbas Google has fewer patents with which to menace Apple. Besides, using patents offensively is not in their DNA (at least not so far).
@Uralbas

If this were true, why would HTC pay Microsoft to keep Microsoft from suing HTC? HTC is one of the only hardware manufacturers to pay Microsoft for 'protection'.
@pervleft Regarding Twitter integration: "Original? Absolutely. Nobody else is stupid enough to do this." LOLROFLMAO ALSO!!!

@Will Pharaoh : Ya right. And my name is actually Steve Jobs. I guess the Google nlawers will be looking at the "new" features carefully see how many lawsuits they can start off with against Apple.

What happened to Apple's innovation? They are now resorting to copying or catching up to others.

Of course the typical fanboi or fangurl won't know that Apple copied Google on this and think it's actually unique to the iPhone.
@Gis Bun I like how it's news that Apple copied something when 90% of Android UI is ripped off of iPhone.

I have tried Android many times. It's not that good. I would not blame iPhone users for not knowing how things are implemented there because they have no reason to look at it.
@Gis Bun A year from now they'll be arguing that Apple made it popular or that Apple came up with it. What a load.
@Will Pharaoh

Well, as any inventor applying for a patent or scientist/doctor publishing a paper will tell you, it's the first one that gets it out that receives credit.

I noticed they're using tabs, microsoft OWNS tabs, well except for the guy that invented the tabbed folder.
@sparkle farkle
I'm hoping you're joking here. Microsoft was the last to use tabs in browsers, still don't have a decent tabbed notepad environment, don't have a decent tabbed filesystem viewer (explorer vs. nautilus, konqueror, dolphin, etc.), don't implement tabs very well in WLM.

Here are my thoughts one these...
Note: I use Android and iOS, phones and tablets in both...

1. Notifications - about time iOS started catching up. I will want the ability to turn off the function of viewing from the lockscreen... security.

2. I prefer having options on how I want this content delivered. Will have to see how good the iOS version is. Background updates are fine but I need to be able to turn this feature of if on 3G/4G; especially if I have a data cap.

3. Twitter? WTH!?! - if you are going to blatently mimic Android, add a share to client, not just Twitter. Lame. BTW: I don't use Twitter.

4. Safari - it is lame and this really does little for it. Several web versions in the store already provide most of this. Compared to the Android 3 version Safari still has a long way to go.

5. Reminders - this should be interesting... especially location based. Now this assumes I want Location Based turned on. Not always and give me a better way of turning it off/on. Settings... sheesh!! Now accuracy.... in a conference room.. get near a wall and off goes the reminder? chuckle. I'll need to see this. Sounds like a gimmick.

6. Camera - Any improvement in speed is a blessing! The extra features though... I do my photo and video adjustments on a pc capable of properly handling it. I like my data raw and work on copies. Not sure of the value of this..... we'll see......

7. Mail - Does it need it but it still stops short. Looks like a partial version of GMail with most of the good stuff left out. Make it more Outlook-Centric for some features. Still needs serious improvement.

8. PC Free - About time!! One question on the updates... are these auto or can I opt out and do when I want? If I am updating how will it handle interuptions? Serious concerns here. Hope they are a very close copy of Android.

9. Game Center - chuckle. Open Feint does it good and I don't need to be just iOS to use it. I see this more as another Apple silo.

10. iMessage - who came up with this old, well implimented idea? I use Google Talk and can do it across devices - all kinds of devices. wow.

End of day, Apple really needs to start thinking harder on linking iOS users to the outside world. Then there is the impact to slightly older hardware (3GS, iPad) that still sells well. This looks like it will seriously impact their functionality - limited mem. And some wonder why we said that the iPad2 needed 1gb...

While this interests me and makes for a better comparison Android to Apple, it feels more like a 4.5, not a 5.0.

Not really impressed, more of a ho-hum. plain

Re: Updates
Ed Burnette 7th Jun
@rhonin Application updates have always been optional. You get a notification updates are available (a badge on the App store icon) then you open the App store and get a list of what is updated. You pick and choose what you want or just press Update All. My guess is that OS updates will be similar.

One thing I like about iOS app updates vs. Android ones is that it's easy see what changed in all the apps at once. In the Android Market you have to drill down on each app, expand the More tag, read it, then back out and repeat for the next app.
in the world you've comeup with a blog stating they copied from Android. Actually most of the features iOS 5 are from WP7 Mango update.
@Ed Burnette One thing I DONT like about iOS updates is every time you go to update an app, it kicks you back to the home screen. Android has a much better interface for that kind of thing.

If Apple really wanted to be innovative, they'd swipe SBSettings and make it part of iOS. That's pretty much the only redeeming quality about iOS right now.
@rhonin
Apple doesn't usually come out with things that the world has never seen. There were programs in DOS that attempted to do a graphical interface, but Apple did is right with the Mac. Others then copied.

There were attempts by other manufacturers to build a computer screen that included all components besides the keyboard and mouse, but it was not until the iMac from Apple came, that these were used by any significant numbers of people. Other manufacturers have tried to make all-in-one computers, but so far have not been very successful at it.

There were music players on the market, but Apple made one that people actually wanted to use. Other copycats were and still are left in the dust.

There were tablets, but nobody used them until Apple came out with the iPads and did it right. It remains to be seen, whether any of the copycat also-rans will sell in significant numbers.

There were phones, but Apple came out with a smart phone having a touchscreen that actually worked so that people were willing to buy them by the millions. In this area, the copycats have had some measure of success, but will face a steep uphill climb to integrate a desktop computer, a tablet and a phone into a coherent and useful system of devices.

Once again, Steve could have shouted "Gentlemen start your copiers!"
@arminw So everything that follows an Apple release is a copy by default?

"There were music players on the market, but Apple made one that people actually wanted to use. Other copycats were and still are left in the dust."

You do remember that Creative successfully sued Apple for copying its menu for its first iPods, right?

@jgm ((( "So everything that follows an Apple release is a copy by default?" )))

He said nothing of the kind.

((( "You do remember that Creative successfully sued Apple for copying its menu for its first iPods, right?" )))

Yeah, Creative was awarded the patent for sorting music into Artist:Album:Track. That's a little like getting a patent on alphabetical order. And technically, it's not accurate that "Creative successfully sued Apple," since they settled out of court.
@arminw
The popularity of the iPod came primarily from iTunes. The ability to purchase music easily was key. The iPod was ok, as a music player: good interface, ho hum sound quality, but I could never get over having to tether the thing to my computer. Yick.

OK Android fan
ITman370 6th Jun
Yeah we can tell you are an android fan and an Apple Hater.... First off some of the things that Apple has added to iOS 5 are from Blackberry and Windows (BBM and Camera) but we dont see you saying anything about that. Secondly, who cares?? Android has had these features, yes, but have they had them working as well as apple will? NO! Apple wont put it in until it works well. Take multi tasking for example, ANdroid has had this before Apple did. But will your android phone last more than a day on a single charge?? Didn't think so.

So yest Apple is using ideas from other OS... but they are doing more that just copying and pasting. THey are improving. Maybe now Android can take what apple has made better and learn.

Peace
@ITman370
"Take multi tasking for example, ANdroid has had this before Apple did. But will your android phone last more than a day on a single charge?? Didn't think so."

iOS does not really have multitasking. It has task switching, but the apps that are not running in the "foreground" are frozen.
@Theli and apple does not run flash, etc. Sure, if you take everything off the fone that eats battery, IT WILL RUN LONGER, LONGER, LONGER!
@ITman370
I have yet to have a day when either my i4 or Nexus last beyond midafternoon under normal use....

My son's Captivate is very comparible to his 3GS, both last about a day and a half....

You were saying?

As far as the user experience is concerned. It is true multi-tasking. I get skype messages when I'm browsing a site with Safari. I don't care how the OS pulls it off. Unless their implementation kills my handset performance and battery life. Like in Android. Then it sucks.
@Theli: code in the background (let alone specific other APIs for that).
@Theli
Hmmmm. I listen to Pandora while using other aps... no freeze.
I talk, surf and text simultaneously ok. Not sure about the freeze there either.
@Theli Nope. Not true. I have music running in the background, can flip to issh, flip to a browser, then rdp, all while everything is running with no dropped connections. You are however correct that some apps get frozen when shuffled off.
@Theli I think you may be a bit confused.

If I leave my game to send an email, when I return, the game resumes where I left off. - "Task Switching."

If I want to listen to my Pandora radio while playing a game or using an app, I can. - "Multitasking."
@Theli

The iPhone does have multi-tasking. You are reading too much into the usage of the word rather than the meaning. If you start a Pandora stream and then start browsing the internet, your stream continues, and you can use the system controls to pause the stream. That is multitasking. It's not full-on multi-tasking, but it is multi-tasking. I wish Google would implement something similar into Android; delegating simple tasks to the system while the rest of the app stays inactive. If a developer needs more than that, they can still create an app that will use full-on multi-tasking. Apple had a good idea, and now everybody hates them because it wasn't in Android first. I do dislike Apple, but I will give them credit where it is due.
@ITman370
Actually, they work splendidly, and in many cases, Apple's implementation is still not quite as well thought out as Android's.
As far as multitasking, there were stories going around as late as last week that it kills battery life on iOS. My Android gets through two days on a single charge, and it does all the fan dangled syncing it wants. You're making an argument that was valid when the G1 was still hot stuff. Time to move on happy
@anakin78z
Depending on the app, it can degrade the apparent battery life. Bigger issue is the memory it hogs.... sad

Re: Memory
Ed Burnette 7th Jun
@rhonin Actually, you *want* to see all the memory being used, at least in Android. That means inactive apps will start up quicker. If the memory is needed by the foreground app, then the least recently used stuff is discarded.
@ITman370
Android Multitasking has had its clues from WM and WebOS, so it is not original there either. Most of the stuff Ed is talking about had its roots from elsewhere not Android. OTA, Symbian first, Notifications BB and then WM, Camera WM, true multitasking - WM, browsers even though it wasn't IE, WM had browsers like Opera etc. even before Android opened its eyes, Reminders - a lot of 3rd party software made it possible for WM in its day. So none of the stuff that Ed cries about have their roots elsewhere not Android. Sorry Ed to burst your bubble.
@Rama.NET No bursting necessary, I agree with you. I think it's hypocritical for anyone, whether it's Apple or Microsoft or Google, to claim invention of almost all features on phones today. Software developers should be free to build upon and enhance ideas that others have developed before. But now, in the US at least, when we do that we're accused of "stealing" and hit with patent lawsuits. Or at least we're afraid enough of that happening to modify our behavior to the detriment of great improvements. It's sad.
