Google makes $5million code contribution to Eclipse

Summary: Google is releasing two of the products it acquired from Instantiations into open source under the care of the Eclipse Foundation.

In August, when Google purchased Instantiations along with several of their excellent development tools, I wrote:

This may be just wishful thinking but it would be terrific if Google would donate WindowBuilder to the Eclipse project.

Today they did just that. Eric Clayberg, Software Engineering Manager for Google Developer Tools, formerly co-founder and VP of Product Development at Instantiations made this announcement in the Google Code blog:

Today we are announcing Google’s donation of the source code and IP for two of these products to the open source community through the Eclipse Foundation. This donation includes WindowBuilder, the leading Eclipse Java GUI Designer, and CodePro Profiler, which identifies Java code performance issues. Specifically, the WindowBuilder Engine and designers for SWT and Swing. All in all, this is a value of more than $5 million dollars worth of code and IP.

Eclipse is notoriously paranoid, about IP entanglements so it will take a while for the contribution to be reviewed and the projects to be officially created. Eric says we can expect to see them in the first half of 2011. He will be leading the WindowBuilder project.

Google is transitioning commercial support of these products to third parties. Genuitec intents to offer commercial support for all the WindowBuilder products, and OnPositive will offer support for the CodePro Profiler. Money from the commercial contracts will help pay the salaries for some of the committers to these projects.

Ed Burnette has been hooked on computers ever since he laid eyes on a TRS-80 in the local Radio Shack. Since graduating from NC State University he has programmed everything from serial device drivers and debuggers to web servers. After a delightful break working on commercial video games, Ed reluctantly returned to business software. He currently develops enterprise software for Android phones and tablets.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! They are both Java development tools. Whose Java ? Has Oracle spoken on the matter?

@Sagax- Google claims they don't .... but Dalvik is completely useless without a Java JDK.

These tools are for Java Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition as produced mainly by Sun, er, I mean Oracle. They wouldn't help mobile development.

@Ed Burnette to some degree it would, if code runs poorly on the desktop it will be really bad on the phones.

Your advice to donate has been in the back of my mind since you made the suggestion. Lots of other folks asked us to do this as well, so I am very happy that Google has allowed us "to do the right thing" and make this contribution. We already have almost a dozen outside committers signed up in addition to the ones we are providing. This is going to be a very cool project!
