Welcome to the new blog about IT, work, careers and everything in between from Deb Perelman, covering that thing we do no less than 2,000 hours a year, and think about in all too many of the 6,700 we're not paid to.

Here I will weigh in on all of the news and trends that affect your daily grind. Expect to see posts about the IT job market, the economic forces that affect it and how to stay ahead of the curve; the good and bad of workplace culture and all the ways the tech job doesn't resemble that of ten, or even five years ago as well as technology education, innovation and competition and what the next generation does and does not bring to the table.

And also this: I'm sitting in a coffee shop this morning, and at the next table a manager is chewing out a barista over an incident that seems to have occurred last night. He's saying he didn't have time to do something or other, that he had no coverage because nobody wanted to come in and he'd warned her about this before she left. The manager is talking quickly, her hands waving and I hear the phrases "my job" and "expectations" and "gets done" and "no ifs, ands or buts." He says, "the conversations that we've had, I feel like you're not lis..." She cuts him off, "It has to be this way."

I have no idea who is right, but I know who will have the last word. And on all the parallels between this and your job, latte-frothing or not, one could write a book, but here we'll just limit it to a blog post or twelve.

I hope you'll join the conversation.
