Apple iPhone 4 launch day; why I won't be buying one for the first time

By | June 24, 2010, 2:14am PDT

Summary: There are lines all over the world for the Apple iPhone 4 launch today, but this time will be the first time I will be avoiding the lines and skipping the newest iPhone. Competition has risen and the carrier issues with AT&T are too much for me to handle.

Today is iPhone 4 launch day and being the smartphone fanatic that I am I tried to place a pre-order last week. The system was having major issues at the time so I ended up with just an in-store reservation to pick one up today. I purchased the last three iPhones and was in line either the night before or early on launch day for each one, but for iPhone 4 I have decided to pass up my opportunity to purchase the device after a week of evaluating my options and have no plans to purchase the iPhone 4 at this time. There were several factors that went into my final decision and I wanted to share them with you since I think there are others performing this same evaluation.

Let me start off by saying that I would have already purchased my iPhone 4 if I was an existing AT&T customer who was eligible for an iPhone discounted upgrade because I think the iPhone 4 is clearly the best smartphone available on the AT&T network. That said, I am not currently a subscriber so the decision is not quite as easy. Here is a list of the factors that went into my decision, with more details for each factor following my list:

  1. AT&T network performance
  2. Sprint vs Verizon vs AT&T monthly fee comparison
  3. iOS experiences on iPhone 3GS
  4. The Android competition

Please keep in mind these are MY reasons and everyone will have different preferences, network performance, and desires so I am not judging anyone or saying that the iPhone 4 is not the device you should purchase. Much of my chagrin also is directly related to the AT&T network, which is not applicable to those readers outside the US.

AT&T network performance

I purchased the original iPhone in 2007, followed by the 3G and then the 3GS. I was an AT&T subscriber each of those times and dropped them twice during these past three years. My last attempt was a way I thought would get my whole family onto AT&T so we could eventually be an iPhone family, but that failed miserably when we experienced dropped calls almost every day in areas where different phones, not just the iPhone, showed strong signal strength. If your network cannot be reliable for the basics then there is no reason to stay with the carrier and pay huge monthly fees. I know that carrier performance varies wildly by geographic position so this issue may not affect you at all.

I have been an extremely happy T-Mobile customer for about 9 years and my calls never drop while I get full coverage just about everywhere I live, work, and play. I also have seen very good network performance from Sprint and Verizon. AT&T’s issues for me may be related directly to the number of iPhone customers in my area, but I am not willing to put up with and pay for substandard network performance any longer.

Sprint vs Verizon vs AT&T monthly fee comparison

I recently dropped Verizon and switched to Sprint for the HTC EVO 4G. A factor here was the carrier offerings and even with the $10 premium data fee, Sprint ends up being less expensive than Verizon and AT&T while offering more services. Let’s take a look at the lowest individual calling plan with data and unlimited text messaging as a comparison and here is what we see:

  • AT&T: $39.99 for 450 minutes, 2GB data plan for $25, unlimited text for $20, and AT&T Navigator for $6.99 (current promo price) all for a total of $91.98
  • Sprint: $69.99 for 450 minutes with UNLIMITED data, unlimited text, included Sprint Navigation, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile, Sprint TV and more and premium EVO data fee of $10, all for a total of $79.99 before taxes
  • Verizon Wireless: $59.99 for 450 minutes and unlimited text, $29.99 for UNLIMITED data, $9.99 per month for VZ Navigator all for a total of $99.97

You can also add WiFi tethering with Verizon or Sprint, while Apple offers a cable tethering option for the iPhone 4. I regularly hit 2GB of data with my regular smartphones and imagine with a more powerful iPhone 4 people will reach that 2GB level. Additional GB cost $10/month so you could add $10 or $20 to the AT&T total above if you are a heavy data user. Verizon has also announced they will be following AT&T and moving to a metered data strategy soon. After yesterday’s revealing of the Verizon Motorola Droid X and Andrew’s review I was seriously considering the device over my EVO, but the $20/month savings affected this decision as well.

It is pretty clear here that Sprint offers the most for less and this was a good exercise for me to perform because it helped me confirm that the Sprint EVO 4G is the right device at this time for my needs.

iOS 4 experiences on iPhone 3GS

A couple of days ago I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4 and was able to spend quite a bit of time with it yesterday to get a good feel for the new operating system. I do like the ability to finally organize my apps into limited folders and the task switcher is handy. I do not like the “multitasking” implementation though as I have seen it freezing where I left apps and not allowing true multitasking where things keep running in the background. For example, I started loading a webpage, then jumped into refresh my Twitter feed, then jumped over to read an email and into Kobo to download some ebooks. I went back to the webpage and it did not load anymore than where I left it and then checked Kobo to find the book was in the same download position I left it in. I know that true multitasking probably has a major hit on battery life and understand Apple’s desire to control this, but I personally would rather I be allowed to manage this and have things run the way I want them too.

I have owned the first three iPhones and have never stuck with using them for an extended period of time. I like the apps and the user experience for the most part, but do not like just having application shortcuts all over the home screens. I want more on my smartphone and the iOS just doesn’t do it for me.

The Android competition

The other hottest mobile operating system today is Google Android with the Sprint HTC EVO 4G and Verizon Motorola Droid X the main competitors at this time while T-Mobile will soon have the Samsung Galaxy S. I like the iPhone operating system for many reasons, but here are my personal reasons that I prefer the Google Android operating system:

  • Outstanding notifications system
  • Widgets and/or Home screen glanceable information
  • Unshackled multitasking and user control
  • Hardware variations (huge touchscreen or QWERTY keyboard designs)

I do believe that Apple’s iOS offers a smoother, more consistent user experience that I know will appeal to the masses. However, I need these things above to be implemented before I find iOS as useful to me as the Google Android OS. Palm’s webOS offers a fun and intuitive experience while also meeting some of my needs above, but there is no compelling hardware at this time running webOS. I also don’t think applications are a factor any longer, except for games, since I am able to find any application I want on Android that I use on the iPhone.

I should also mention that the Sprint HTC EVO 4G will get better in a few months when HTC and Sprint release the Google Android 2.2 (Froyo) update with support for Adobe Flash, Bluetooth voice control, speed increases, battery life improvements, improved Android Market, microSD card app install support, Gmail switcher, and much more.

The new iPhone 4 display is probably phenomenal, except for the yellow spots, but I honestly cannot see the pixels on my EVO 4G display either when I hold it close to my face and much prefer the larger 4.3 inch display size. I like the quality and performance of the camera and dual LED flash lights on the HTC EVO and particularly enjoy using the kickstand.

Can you now understand where I am coming from and why I am not getting the iPhone 4 today?

RE: Apple iPhone 4 launch day; why I won't be buying one for the first time

@spookyone1

You really don't understand the anger? Look no farther than your Apple fanboy legacy of unfounded attacks on others and your almost universal smug attitudes and unfounded claims of superiority. Like most non Apple users, I spent well over a decade attempting to "get along" with you fanboys. The anger comes from your camp's unwillingness to accept the choices of others without disparagement and constantly starting arguments that we never wanted in the first place, repeatedly offering "whatever works for you" as a friendly exit strategy without creating flame wars. But your camp refused to play by common rules of etiquette.

You've gotten what you wanted, a virtual class war. And now you complain about the fruit you so carefully tended for all those years....lol Your hypocrisy is really quite humorous. Spend two decades fomenting discord, then sit back and say "golly jee, why doesn't anyone like me?" Are you all really that dense?

Still running OSX on the Wintel platform we created and you came a begging for after the demise of your closed source hardware model? wink Pathetic techno wannabees.

You and you alone wasted the opportunity for a friendly techno world by your own actions and created the hostile environment you're complaining about. You get what you give.
With so many phones coming out the 2 year contract limits the competiton between the smartphones. Example I purchased a Apple 3GS in August 09. I'm eligible to upgrade in January 2011 which is 7 months before my 2 year contract runs out so it would cost me 500.00 to buy an EVO now.
@jblazsek@... Yeah. www.MobilePhoneBillofRights.com is on to something!
"Can you now understand where I am coming from and why I am not getting the iPhone 4 today?"

No.
@astra4
Sorry; but without elaborating you come across as either arrogant or lazy (or both).
@rikasa Actually, I was planning on saying exactly the same word but astra4 beat me to it. And I don't think I would have come across as arrogant or lazy at all.
How many arrogant people think they are arrogant
@rikasa
If you were in a job interview or on a date and every time the other person ask you a question and you respond with one single word and nothing more....ain't gonna go so well.
@astra4 I am arrogant and a bit lazy... The evo is still junk beside my iPhone 4. It creaks when you touch it... Sorry, I'm not in to cheap tech, give me the good stuff!
@daddymatt Creaks when you touch it? Ok buddy, have fun with your iTrash and enjoy steve jobs junk in your mouth for another 2 years.
  • Flagged
@daddymatt Oh, you mean the good stuff that can't make a call because of it's antenna issues? Or maybe you mean the good stuff with the yellow spots on it's display?
Is this the 'good stuff' you're talking about?
@daddymatt what's the basis in which your judging the evo... were u playing with a abused store model or do you own one. From what i'm understanding the iphone 4 is having problems of its own, antenna and screen. The iphone 4 is full of gimmicks designed to make people think its so great... android isn't perfect but its grown up quicker than apple's stable yet ridiculously juvenile OS.
@daddymatt It's true; the EVO does creak when you touch it. Of course that creaking does come from the removable back cover -- a feature many people appreciate in a phone.
@daddymatt
You S. Jbb's believers are so funny. You believe that is good because SJ says it LOL. Like they invented the A4 chip too? ups no, it comes from a 3rd party company and the Samsung Galaxy has the same Chip on it. ops!!
It's a cult Apple brainwash them slowly, not like the Apple Store boys, those goes thru an intense brain Washing session or have already been converted. Apple is the new Scientology crap LOL
@daddymatt Remember people, a fanboy is just that. Reasoning capacity is something they have not.
@me neitherastra4 me
@astra4 When there is nothing to say monosyllables are very useful.
The Evo is on Sprint, not ATT. So you woul;dn't be payin the 500 for the Evo
@cchismc@... After he pays the penalty to AT&T and then buys the Evo, that would be about $500....
@Stinger66 at&t's penalty is prorated. If he's only got seven months left he can't have too much penalty left and the savings from Sprint's lower monthly rates might make up for that.
ATT network performance: I'm now going into year 4 with ATT and my iPhone, and I've never had network problems. No dropped calls, and a fast 3G network with extensive coverage.
Sprint vs Verizon vs ATT: having been with all three companies, you would never catch me even considering Sprint or Verizon as viable alternatives again, both had terrible customer service. ATT iPhone pricing was a bit high, but I recently switched to the 250MB plan and I now consider it very reasonable.
IOS4 experience: in one word, fantastic.
The Android competition: in one word, a mess.

How So?

@spinoza2
"The Android competition: in one word, a mess. "

In what way is it a mess? I don't have a smartphone yet. My brother has a Nexus One. He loves it and has only a few small complaints.

He looked at the iPhone out of curiosity and played with it a while, and he generally said it was good. But he was annoyed by the limited multitasking, didn't want to go back to AT&T's crappy network and customer service, and on principle he preferred to not give his money to such a restrictive and antagonizing company as Apple.
@colinnwn It's lucky he didn't go with the iPhone. There's all kinds of issues with it already. The biggest is the dropped calls/antenna hardware issue. It's not a good thing...
@colinnwn
It's a mess in the way Linux is a mess, and before you say anything, I'm a happy user of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora, Knoppix, DamnSmall, Puppy, openSUSE, Debian...that's the point. FOSS OS's tend to fracture, as Android is doing right now. Every company using it does the thing that makes FOSS attractive in the first place, CHANGES IT. That's why it's such a b***h to get your wifi card running on Ubuntu. My next phone will be Andriod based, but I've gotten a wifi card running--in Puppy! The fact that every Android is different could drive away non-tech-savvy (read non-geek) users. People don't have Windows on their computers because it's better, they have it because it always works like they expect it to. If Android ends up with versions as different as Ubuntu is from CrunchBang is from Puppy, it'll be hard to sell to the masses. I'm hoping Google helps keep that under control, but FOSS is meant to run free...

It might be a mess in a GOOD way, but it is a mess, and likely to get bigger.
@spookyone1 you do realize that apple's ios is based on unix as well right? Wait, you are an ubuntu user and you call yourself a linux user HAHA ok I got it :P Any true linux users see right through that

Don't know where you are comming from
Jimster480 24th Jun 2010
@spinoza2 I have never had an issue with Sprint customer service. Maybe the CS was bad before they merged with nextel? But we were on Nextel until about a year after the merger and we have never had an issue. If you aren't having issues with your AT&**** service then you are either a.) lying to yourself b.) lying to everyone here c.) in denial or d.) in a location that doesn't have many people yet somehow has 3G coverage (since we all know how bad their 3G coverage really is).
And if you think a 250MB plan is reasonable for $15 a month then your a moron. You obviously haven't even experienced the iOS since you can't really use ANY of its features on 250MB a month of data, unless your around free Wifi 24/7.
@Jimster480 look at all the gripes about at&t performance with other phones besides the iPhone. then ask yourself "maybe it's the iPhone?!?!"

Maybe?!?
The_Omega_Man 25th Jun 2010
@thatroom - Or maybe it's the users. The unsuspecting or the uncaring users of those devices that, no matter what Apple does to them, they still continue to lust after and accept ANY crap that Apple may put out.
@Jimster480
I am both a former and current Sprint customer and you hit it dead on. Sprint had, hands down, the worst CS I had ever seen before the merger. I am pleasantly surprised at how well they have cleaned up their act.

But I am ALSO an AT&T customer with an iPhone. AT&T's CS stinks but every time I've had a problem with I have just called Apple, who have been great. As to coverage, both AT&T and Sprint have huge coverage gaps, just in different places. While this is convenient for me, I suppose it's not good for everyone.

"The Android competition: in one word, a mess. "

That's two words.
@spinoza2 I'm glad to hear AT&T has been good for you in your area. AT&T's quality of service is largely area dependent. While you have no dropped call problems, someone in another part of the country may experience nothing but problems.
@spinoza2 Good luck with your poorly designed antenna issues, spinboy. No dropped calls? BS.

@vailmcc
So it is very likely he has had no problems also he might be
one of those who buys a case of some sort when purchasing the iPhone I did for my 3GS and put it in said case before I even used it. I use AT&T and haven't had a dropped call issue in my years plus use of it. I live in a basement apartment as well. So no it's not spin for many a person with an iPhone 4 no problems are being reported. I would say the vast majority even. With many a customer AT&T is just fine.

The writer did add the disclaimer in at least 2 separate places that he understands network performance varies from region to region.

That said, a whooooole lot of people have performance issues under at&t. Nobody at at&t is pretending that is not true. Much more so than any other carrier. Not only the iphone drones but I have to deal with friends with iphones who keeps dropping their call. but I usually just tell them to text me instead because I can't deal with their crappy phone service.
@spinoza2 -

I have a regular Nokia phone on ATT and I experience dropped calls on a fairly regular basis, which is annoying as hell.

@spinoza2 Currently outselling the iphone and either closing in on market share or already passed iphone. Some mess, huh? If you have an iphone and are happy with it, good for you! Now, go away. Go on. Scoot!

Android based phones that they would eventually surpass unit sales of the iPhone. The real question is what kind of money per sale are these vendors making? I think I'd much rather have a per unit profit from every Macintosh sold then I would for every Dell PC sold. Now if you break it down per vendor like Moto Android sales vs Apple iPhone sales how does that work? Also how much does Moto make vs Apple? Does google take a hit off of Moto's sales? Apple shares with no one. Apple gets all the profit from each and every single sale. I'd much rather have Apples business plan than Moto's in this case.

Pagan jim
@richdave
It equalled, not exceeded iPhone sales in Q1, and is currently tied for fourth in the phone OS marketshare, sharing that place with "all the rest." BlackBerry is #1. iOS is #2, WinMo is #3. I want to see a good open OS on a phone, too, but exaggerating, and you knew you were guessing, that's why you used weasel words, doesn't make a point that needs making.
@spinoza2 - "IOS4 experience: in one word, fantastic." Relative to iOS3.x Probably...
Relative to Android or WebOS...Not on you life!

For Playing Games and wasting time - iOS is it!
For Getting things done - Android (or WebOS when they have a real hardware platform) is what you need/want!
@The_Omega_Man
Both iOS4 and Android provide good user experiences, though with Android it depends a lot on which device, but WebOS? I WANTED to love it. I tried to love it. I hate it. Really, truly, hate it.
@The_Omega_Man

Well put. Currently I have the Evo, I did have the Palm Pre which is a AWESOME phone just underpowered. The OS its self is BEAUTIFUL. Android is heading in that direction. Froyo is also beautiful happy
250MB data plan on AT&T for a smartphone? Sweet, enjoy that while I go use 250MB today alone on my EVO on sprint that I pay less a month for and have never had a single customer service complaint in 5 years. In fact, I've never seen a company so willing to work with me anytime I've wanted to change something around or do things a little different. Maybe it's just the local employees that just seem to always be helpful one way or the other, but I couldn't imagine dealing with the cap and trade known as AT&T.
@swatpup102 Same here, me nor my family has ever had issues with Sprint. Even calling their support lines the people have been very helpful, even waving fee's for having services performed.
@swatpup102 Sprint just won an award for the biggest improvement in customer service; not just in the wireless industry, but in all industries.
