AT&T and HTC announce the HTC Aria low cost, compact Android smartphone

By | June 14, 2010, 7:09am PDT

Summary: HTC announced their first Google Android device on AT&T, the HTC Aria. This looks to be a good alternative to those on AT&T who do not want an iPhone, but then why else would you be on AT&T?

AT&T is the carrier with the weakest lineup of Google Android smartphones, but you can’t really blame them when they have the Apple iPhone locked down on their network. A new iPhone launches on AT&T next week which looks to give HTC just a small window to announce the new HTC Aria Google Android device. I personally am more of a fan of the Google Android operating system and think this looks like a nice device for those on AT&T looking for something other than an iPhone this summer.

THe HTC Aria is powered by Android 2.1 with HTC Sense. Other key specifications and features include a 5-megapixel camera, 3.2 inch HVGA display, and price of just $129.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and two year agreement. The HTC Aria will be available on June 20th, the same week as the iPhone 4. It is quite a compact device with a length of just over 4 inches and a weight of 4.05 ounces.

Is there any possibility that Htc Aria arrives in Asia?
Not the Aria, they could have gotten something equivalent to Droid Incredible. Aria is low level game, not real competitor to iPhone on AT&T network, definitely not. If it were Droid Incredible, I would have seen some potential for it.

$129 after a $100 rebate ... not so cheap.
@mobile_manny thats what I was thinking. I think I'd rather go for an iPhone 3gs, even though i don't like Apple, its better hardware for cheaper.
I didn't want an iphone (or blackberry bold), and I expected that ATT's Android offerings would be lame. I ended up jumping ship to Sprint and an Evo 4G.

It would be the least they could do to get me out of Windows Mobile 6.5!

Wifi G not N, but it's small. Can't find the details on the screen but I'm sure the res will be great like your current HTC phone. Even 480x320 would be awesome on a screen that size.
Actually there is another reason to be on AT&T - they are GSM providers. Anyone with international travel plans would want to be on AT&T. Tmobile is GSM too but unfortunately they do not have reasonable data and texting plans for international roamers.
And then there is local stuff...i live in southern louisiana. AT&T has blanketed the entire interstate between Baton Rouge and NOLA with 3G. With Tmobile i will get GPRS and not even edge. And no dropped calls here and 3G speeds are regularly above 1mbps with ATT.
@ecobranon
yes, I agree with you. But I so wanted to see something better than Aria. Aria is not so cheap and not better than any other Android 2.1 HTC phones out there. AT&T's Android offerings look like an eye wash.

No sense in buying Aria. $229 before the $100 rebate? Sorry, that won't do.
Yea, it's Android. Does it make and receive calls without dropping them?
