First front facing QWERTY Android device coming to T-Mobile, Motorola Charm

By | July 7, 2010, 11:33am PDT

Summary: T-Mobile will be adding to its extensive Google Android offerings with the Motorola Charm. This also happens to be the first front facing QWERTY Android device.

We heard some recent rumors of a QWERTY Android device coming soon to T-Mobile the past few weeks and I just read over on PhoneScoop that Motorola announced the Motorola Charm for T-Mobile USA. You may recall I ordered an Agora Pro back in late 2008 that was supposed to be the first front facing QWERTY Android device, but that device turned out to be vaporware and my money was refunded. The Motorola Charm is certainly coming and while it looks a bit odd, it may be appealing to those Sidekick users who cannot upgrade to another Sidekick now that T-Mobile has killed off that line.

The Motorola Charm runs Google Android 2.1 with the latest MOTOBLUR UI. It has a 2.8 inch touchscreen display with front facing QWERTY keyboard. The design is short and chunky looking, but may be better in person than in photos. It has a unique BACKTRACK navigation pad, similar to the way the Backflip had a touch sensitive are on the back, that is designed to let you navigate while having the full display viewable for browsing, email, etc. Motorola is also providing support for Moto Phone Portal on the Charm so you can manage the phone’s data from a web browser through USB or a WiFi connection. Additional specs include a 3 megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, microSD card slot, and second microphone for better voice quality.

It is expected to launch this summer on T-Mobile for an undisclosed price.

I have a blackberry (contract coming up soon) and I have enjoyed the keyboard. I was looking at the T-Mobile 3G slide (which is cool), but with the slide out keyboard, none of the carry cases can really be anything other than a kludge or a pouch. I will take a close look at this because it appears to be a direct competitor to the BB. I want an android phone (played with lots in stores) and was considering BB with OS6.0 only because I like the keyboard (as millions do with their BB's, lol). I think this will appeal to many.

@TripleII
except few i have seen jumping boats, most of the BB users are once you're BB user your are BB user for almost ever.
The battery life of BB is still much better than Android devices. I've migrated up to Android 2.0 on my Moment but still have to turn off many services to get a full workday out without having to plug in. I can run same apps on BB all day without needing to plug in.

I don't know

My TMO contract is up in October (an original G1 guy) and am hoping that they'll have something decent phone-wise that I can continue on with. I don't think this is it.
@rag@...
Get a Nexus One. You'll be first in line for updates, and it's a great device.
@rag@... I think the phone you want then is the new Samsung Vibrant, coming out on 7/15 from Tmo. I'll be in line for it. Great bright screen, fast chip, RAM, features, and Android.
So what is the size of the keyboard compared to the BB??

Yuck!

Too small of a screen. Really the onscreen keyboards work great, even with my big fingers.
Looks more like a Curve 83xx and iPhone4 did the nasty and this is the bastard child that came from said mating.

Improve a little on the next iteration of the myTouch Slide and you may have me 100% going to Android. That is, unless the BB slider becomes available on T-Mobile first
