Is this a possible future Palm device?

Is this a possible future Palm device?

Summary: It's Monday morning so what better way to start off the week than with a bit of mobile phone rumor news. Jenn at Pocketables posted a photo and some information on a possible new Palm device that some are calling the Quatro. Jenn was wondering if it was some kind of new UMPC/MID concept design and now others are saying it may be a future smartphone. The similarity of the keyboard to the Palm Treo Pro and Centro devices indicate it may be a Palm device.

I think it is too early to say we will see this from Palm in 2009 as a Linux, Palm OS, or Windows Mobile device because there are always lots of different protype and mock-up devices floating around that never see the light of day. The design is rather unique because it would give you a full large touch screen with the QWERTY capability just when you need it without making the device too large. I think the slider form factor, like what I have on my HTC Fuze, gives you a wider and more functional QWERTY keyboard though and this device may be too gimmicky. This concept reminds me of Tony Stark's phone from Ironman, the LG VX9400.

Here are a couple more articles on this rumored device from Treonauts and Engadget.

  • It's too late for Palm

Even if this is the next Palm device it is just rehashing some other company's ideas which doesn't impress me. When I went to the electronics store a few years ago Palm would have have a large display, now I just see a one or two models mixed in with some others and I see nothing from Palm in the cell phone displays. Palm is dead or close to it, it just hasn't realized it yet.

I sold my palm Life Drive on Kijiji for a reduced price and a bag of M&Ms. The M&Ms were the highlight of owning a Palm. Someone administer Last Rights already. RIP Palm.

True. I have a centro, least innovative piece of technology I have ever used. My fault for buying it years ago. Their probelm is that if they make a new phone they have so many hurtles to overcome from their lack of updated OS that they better make a flawless phone or people will pick them apart.
