Nokia updates Nokia Maps and Nokia Messaging clients and services

In addition to the amazing new upcoming Nokia N97 Nokia announced some service upgrades at Nokia World 2008. In particular there are new versions of Nokia Maps and Nokia Messaging. Nokia Maps gives you new features like high resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks, ability to share your location, and the capability to preplan your route and have it sent to your device. The new Nokia Messaging client integrates email and IM (from Yahoo!, Windows Live, Google and AOL). These two updated services are now also brought into the Ovi brand as Maps on Ovi and Mail on Ovi.

The Nokia Maps announcement can be read in full detail. I tried to download the new Nokia Maps 3.0 on my device, but found out that you need to install it on a Windows PC first to get the latest client on your S60 device since there is no SIS file available. Hopefully, support for Macs comes eventually too since you can't install it directly to your S60 device. Here are the other stated features in Nokia Maps 3.0:

  • High-resolution aerial images
  • 3D landmarks for 216 cities and terrain maps
  • New route overview during routing and during Drive
  • Purchasable turn-by-turn car navigation guidance
  • Instant access to real time information such as camera alerts, safety spots and traffic information for selected countries
  • Access to Wcities event guides, giving real-time information for events and movies in over 450 destination
  • Straight-line guidance allows you to walk the shortest distance between point A and point B
  • View multiple entrances to the same underground metro station

The updated Nokia Messaging application works with Mail on Ovi where users get 1GB of storage space. The beta version will roll out in December in 12 languages and is not yet available. This is a commercial service that will require a subscription, with many subscriptions being a part of the wireless carrier data plan.

I have been using the Nokia Email beta client that looks to now be moving to this Nokia Messaging service. I like most of the features of the Nokia Email client/service and found I have the latest version currently available. You can download and install a free limited-period version of the Nokia Messaging (email only part) beta right now on your E71 or N95 by visiting email.nokia.com.

Features of the new Nokia Messenging service include:

  • Experience mobile email as a standard part of the Nokia device experience
  • Create and access Ovi email accounts as well as cross-access to other Ovi services with just one sign-on account
  • 1GB of storage space and spam filters to block spam emails
  • Full access to built-in push email and IM access
  • Email delivery of Yahoo! Mail accounts to Nokia devices
  • Access Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger on the majority of Nokia devices
  • Access Yahoo! Mail directly from the homescreen, giving one touch access to your inbox
  • Set your status and customize status messages, see which of your contacts are online or offline, send and receive instant messages, and use emoticons to enhance your messages

I understand that corporate users will also provided with updated versions of the Mail for Exchange and Lotus Notes Traveler clients.
