Shazam for TV will enhance your Super Bowl experience

Shazam for TV will enhance your Super Bowl experience

Summary: You might think Shazam is just for identifying music, but if you use the app this weekend during the Super Bowl you will find several ways to enhance your experience.

You might think that people would put down the phone and focus on the game when watching sports, but I have seen quite the opposite with an overload on Twitter during the big game as people express their enthusiasm, critize the coaches and refs, or give status updates for those unable to view the game. Mobile devices can also enhance the experience with apps that give you stats and other facts about the teams and players. Shazam has been known as the go-to app for music identification, but they are also making major advances in your house through the Shazam for TV experience.

Shazam for TV will be integrated into this weekend's Super Bowl event, including the ads, the game, and halftime show with opportunities for you to enhance your Super Bowl experience. If you use Shazam during the game and participate with your mobile phone then you will have opportunities to receive discount offers, free downlads, enter sweepstakes, vote on your favorite ads, take part in game polls, buy music, support charities, and share your experience on Facebook and Twitter. It sounds to me like Shazam will make the game a more enjoyable event, especially if the game turns out to not be very competitive.

Advertising is a major focus of the Super Bowl and Shazam reports that almost half of the ads will be Shazam-enabled so you can tag the ads and receive offers and content. The Bud Light halftime show is also Shazam-enabled so you can unlock content and find out more about the performing artists.

The Shazam application is available for all mobile platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Symbian. Shazam is free with limits on the number of song tags per month, but you can purchase the Encore premium version for select platforms that gives you lifetime unlimited usage.

  • RE: Shazam for TV will enhance your Super Bowl experience

Sorry, Matthew, but every time somebody tells me they're going to "enhance" something I run for cover. The way companies use the word "enhance", it means: This is an opportunity for us to charge you more money for something that most people will never use.

I have seen some ads for Shazam related TV content during and after Superbowl. However, I am not sure that they are giving user enough time to get their phones out and be ready for the functionality. What they may want to do is show the Shazam icon at the beginning of the Commercial and then again a little later. If someone has a realtime DVR going the viewer could rewind (i.e. go back in TV time) and get the Shazam app up and running). I think it could be handy, but I don't really want to be a slave to my TV or my phone so I will have to see how it goes.
  • This isn't why I have Shazam

I have it so when I'm watching TOWIE or Desperate Scousewives and a cool song comes on, I can find out what it is. That's it.
