Symbian Anna and a mega camera update come to the Nokia N8

By | August 22, 2011, 7:16am PDT

Summary: Nokia continues to update the Nokia N8 and other Symbian^3 devices released in 2010 with the Anna and camera updates available now.

It’s real popular to be a Nokia Symbian fan in the U.S., but you can’t fault me for liking my orange Nokia N8 even if I just used it for the fantastic 12 megapixel camera. We have been waiting for a long time for the Symbian Anna update and Nokia finally made it available for the Nokia N8, C7, E7, and C6-01. In addition, Nokia released an amazing camera software update in beta form that takes the N8 camera to the next level.

The Symbian Anna update was something that was talked about by Nokia in late 2010 and thought to come out in the spring. They ended up meeting their regularly pushed back deadline of end of August though and it really does breathe new life into these Symbian^3 devices. The update is available OTA and through the Nokia PC Suite and includes the following new features and updates:

  • Much improved web browser
  • Portrait QWERTY keyboard and in-context text entry
  • New icons
  • Ovi Maps version 3.6
  • Updated Social application
  • Updated Calendar application with split-screen month/day view
  • Updated Photos app
  • Updated mail application (this is MAJOR for me and puts the phone back in my pocket)

I found that Swype works in portrait mode, but won’t give me the in-context entry format so I removed Swype since the in-context view is more important for me at this time. It would have been fabulous to have Anna on the N8 at launch and I think it would have made the device more appealing to people. There is a Symbian Belle update in the works that should also be coming eventually to these Nokia devices and this update looks to make the platform even more similar to Android. I like my N8 and the Anna update lets me use it as a primary device while the Belle update will likely keep it around even longer.

In addition to the Anna update, Nokia also released a camera update for the N8 that will eventually bring 30 FPS video recording (the current beta is at 25 FPS with an update coming very soon) and continuous autofocus for close-up video recording. I was traveling quite a bit earlier this year and tried using my N8 for recording video for reviews and it failed since it lost focus when shooting close up to an object. I ended up using my Samsung Galaxy Tab video camera instead.

Nokia also added a viewfinder grid so you can use the rule of thirds a bit more easily with the camera and video recorder. Remember that you first need to update to Symbian Anna before applying this camera update.

Such a shame about the N8. Amazing camera and.... well, nothing else really. As an i8910 user, the camera is the only thing marking the N8 as a better phone than the one i owned a year before it came out (the i8910). Still keep flip flopping over buying one to replace the i8910, but always come up short when remembering it has a slightly smaller screen, and still (and this is the killer) runs Symbian.
So Matt, how does this compare to Windows Phone 7? Doesn?t updating symbian send a confusing message to consumers?

Doesn't compare, but nice for those who bought the N8

@Rick_Kl IMHO, WP7 blows Symbian away. However, there are millions who bought these Symbian devices and it is nice to see Nokia deliver on their promise to update these devices that are all still quite useful and functional.
@palmsolo (aka Matthew Miller) You seem to be one of the few WP7 evangelists, from personal experience (mind you it may just have been the particular phones at the AT&T store) I was less than impressed by WP7. That being said my current contract ends in October and I will be looking at all options when buying my next phone.
Matthew any clue when itwill be available in the US? I have been doing SW Updates check via Ovi Suites since Saturday to no avail sad

Popped up on both of my N8 devices

@Marilith It appeared via the SW Update utility directly on my two Nokia N8 units here in the U.S. Granted, they may have been import devices so maybe that is why the update appeared.
@palmsolo (aka Matthew Miller) I have tried that on mine as well. I got mine via Amazon, so it is US unit sad
@palmsolo (aka Matthew Miller) the Nokia US site lists Anna as the current SW version but neither the SW Updater in my phone nor Ovi Suite mentions an available update. Mine is at 014.002. I tweeted an d email NokiaCare.
Matthew, I have the same question as another poster. When will the Anna Update be available to those in the US that have the N8? Or will it? Do you know of other ways to get it? There are many rumors that Nokia isn't planning on releasing Anna in the United States. Do you have any information on this?
in houston tx and as of monday aug 22 no anna update available
where are you people fnding it.not on ovi or wifi or any news about a web site that has it.
I also tried last week with no luck and purchased the phone via Amazon in July. The press release says that it will be rolled out to various countries at different times. Everyone that sees the video on mine is amazed (with no update) - I also have an iPhone and too bad Nokia's marketing didn't know how to steer engineering in the right direction - Symbian is way behind Apple - nevertheless, I love the phone and will continue to use it and look forward to seeing the updates

Symbian Anna's horrible icons
gonnawear 14th Sep
Symbian Anna may be a fantastic update but I really dislike the new icons. I've tried to download other themes but these seems to be forever to download. I removed the Microsoft communicator from my phone, would this have anything to do with my problem downloading apps from Ovi store - or is it an Anna issue?
