The Return of Kin: Verizon may try to sell off product stock

By | November 12, 2010, 6:29am PST

Summary: The Kin team has been disbanded and Microsoft killed the project, yet it appears that Verizon may make a second attempt at selling off the stock of devices they still have in their inventory.

You may remember I had my teen daughters evaluate the Kin devices since that was the intended audience. They were underwhelmed with the device and just a month later Microsoft killed the Kin. According to Engadget, Verizon may actually be selling the Kin One and Two again to clear out inventory. I know that the Engadget team only posts things like this that have been verified, but I just cannot believe Verizon would try to sell these again when there is no Kin team and no hope of updates or added features to a dead product. Who in their right mind would even consider purchasing a product that has been killed off by the creators?

Engadget statest that the revised offering will be sold without data, but with the Zune capability through a WiFi connection. So essentially it will be a different Zune device that kids can use for text messaging. How many teens have a Zune or pay the monthly fee for a Zune Pass? This is just sad in so many ways.

when they get the phone, as a way to get people to sign up for their "Family Plan".

@John Zern - Heheheee. You made me laugh.

However, with Windows Phone 7 failing in sales, and Kin making a big comeback, maybe Microsoft should give away a free Windows Phone 7 handset with every Kin purchased. Otherwise they all have to go to landfill.
@gyepera m experience in Australia was that the Wp7 was lmost impossible to get, especially for my chosen model (omnia 7). It's not the phone, is the inability to get the things that is contrbuting to their poor sales. The store that I got mine from turned away 4 other people for lack of stock.

Persoanlly, I 'm miffed with the carriers and the vendors - ie samsung etc - for not having sufficient stock to meet demand. Otherwise, the phone is beautiful. My iPhone weilding partner now wants one.

As for the kin - i saw one once and didn't mind it's look and feel. Don;t know much about the data plan saga, but if it was to be successful it had to be cheap. Perhaps as a no Data plan product, it'd be ok for limited numbers of people.

Sad? I see it as a good opportunity. I thought the Kin was a great concept that revolutioned a new UI. The problem was Verizon decided to throw on a data plan.

pi$$ed because MS could not get its act together on schedule.

But then again, in your parallel universe, MS can do no wrong.
@Economister - and in your universe MS can do no right.

So somewhere between the two of you is the real world, you should BOTH pay it a visit some time.

into cash. I'm sure there's a KIN update already done that can go on them. Wonder if studio will still be functional...

My daughter liked hers

But we returned it because of the expensive required data plan. She did not need a Zune Pass to play her collection of music. She really liked it, she just did not need the data plan - facebook, etc.
Lets start a new #twittermeme: What to do with excess #kin inventory. Hash tag: #kinuses http://zd.net/aRsd4v

Without the data plan

it seems like it could be a good deal. A basic phone with a keyboard for texting. If it has a good RF section (I live in a 'dark' area) I may conciser one to replace my very old Nokia.

Not Big Enough For a Doorstop

Not compelling enough for a teenager.

What they going do with all the Windows 7 phones next year?
I might buy one as a replacement for my son's almost dead LG. Since he's using the family plan and already has unlimited text, I think he would be happy to use this phone until he is up for a new phone (provided the purchase of the KIN doesn't change his phone upgrade date).

A Kin (esp. Kin Two) is, to quote my Business Law professor, "almost sort of kind of OK" as a feature phone. Offered dirt cheap with no monthly tribute to the carrier, it could garner a cult following of some sort.
