I've been torn. I'm trying to figure out who is the leading technology innovation pack at this juncture but the changes come so fast and so furiously that its become almost impossible to pinpoint it. So I'd like to get you weighing in on this.

Here's a poll with a significant number of companies that you can choose from.  Choose one and, once you do, I would LOVE to get your reasons in Talkback as to why you made your choice. If you choose "Other", please feel let me know in a write-in who you think is innovating.

This isn't meant to be only who the coolest is, though that can factor into the choice you make certainly.  It is meant to be the most innovative - leading the leading edge for enterprise.

Okay. Here we go!

[poll id="5"]

UPDATE: The poll will remain open for the remainder of this week. It will close on Friday April 17 at the end of the day Eastern Time

UPDATE: The Poll is CLOSED. Watch for a blog posting on the results.

  • Tail wagging the mutt..

It seems to me that the small players develop a really cool application that creates a lot of noise and buzz.
The 400lbs Gorillas try to scramble a "me too" without thoroughly understanding the value statement and dilute the intent.

    I'm just saying..

Microsoft! The recent announcement about Public Sector On Demand was an amazing breakthrough in thinking. The apps look very rich, the ability to capture public comment is incredible.

  • SugarCRM

Not a lot of enterprise play - yet - but their take on cloud and apps (beyond CRM) is pretty innovative. But I'm a lil biased ;)

      A strong player...yes. Innovative...I can't
agree. What have they done that's changed the
game for other vendors in the space?

Why don't you suggest Zoho, it is one of the mst innovative enterprise ?
    ccoolen
  • What about Zoho ?

I am surprised not to see Zoho in your list ! They are very innovative dont you think so ?

    • Zoho IS Innovative But...

There is no question of how innovative Zoho is, and I considered them for this list, but the reason they didn't end up on it was the word "Enterprise" - that's not their market really. However, I have a HUGE regard for them and was (and continue to be) one of their earlier supporters.

      • What?!!!

Did you miss the GE deal Zoho did to replace the whole of that company's desktop apps?
        dahowlett
        • Nope

I didn't miss it. But that's one deal. And they released their business suite at the end of 2007 aimed at SMBs. I didn't say they can't scale. I said they weren't aimed at the enterprise market.

Despite all the "complaints" Microsoft still keeps coming out with technology that pushes the envelope. The way they are evolving surface into solving real enterprise supply chain problems and the way they built Dynamics CRM as a XRM platform first and foremost and their tools to auto-generate proposals from structured data. They don't always nail marketing the right things, but when you look beyond the marketing there are some cool technologies to tap into.

SuperOffice CRM leads the way in innovation. New features are always being added to the system and, most importantly, the award winning user interface leads to high levels of user adoption.
PC World Magazine (Norway) picked SuperOffice as the Best in Test in their recent CRM test saying "No one beats SuperOffice in usability."

  • Helpstream

Its hard not to put Helpstream on the list. The innovation of tightly coupling social networking functionality with business process in the area of customer service and support is a true breakthrough. The company has recently been placed on the Garnter Magic Quadrant which is quite a feat for a new player. Keep your eyes on the company.

    • True, but not enough

I love Helpstream as you know, but innovation doesn't rest with a single solution per se. We're talking about companies who can have an impact on an industry, not just be a brilliant solution - which they are. They are innovative but not yet industry wide. That's the only reason they're not on the list. Impact and scope had something to do with those on it.

Paul, what about CIOs? The most innovative ones take core technologies from many vendors and create magic unique to their own businesses. Example UPS's DIAD has enabled their drivers with scanning, wi-fi, GPS and more and the battery lasts all day - and it came out 15 years before the iPhone. BP created a sensory network years ago to raise alarms if barrels of unstable chemicals came too close to each other. I could catalog many more.

They are the unsung heroes as I wrote below - no billionaires there but squeezing huge value from tech

    • Corporate Innovators

Actually, I think that you're right and there is a WEALTH of incredibly innovative outcomes out there in the practitioner world. I'm just limiting this to surveying vendors because a. that's what interested me here and b. I have no idea whatever how to construct a poll that would uncover what you're talking about. However, adding CIOs would have been a good idea as a category for the poll. Unfortunately, its too late, but you make a really good point.

Or is a better question, what companies are providing technolog solutions to enterprises that help the enterprise be more innovative in thier own business?

    • Different Question

I think its a different question, not a better one, though a really good one. Just not the purpose of this particular poll.

The large enterprise companies 'innovate' by consuming and assimilating the real innovators to keep just behind the leading edge.
I think that Google and the small companies are really leading real innovation (especially in the Social Media/Networking space), but I don't consider Google and enterprise vendor.
My vote goes to Salesforce because they seem to have the right platform to consolidate and leverage the real innovations into something useful for enterprises.
