Facebook starts rolling out facial recognition feature worldwide

By | June 7, 2011, 11:56am PDT

Summary: Facebook has started rolling out a facial recognition feature worldwide called Tag Suggestions.

Late last year, Facebook started rolling a facial recognition feature across the US. Now, the company has pushed the Tag Suggestions feature to countries outside of the US, but has switched it on by default without telling its users first.

When you upload new photos, Facebook uses software similar to that found in many photo editing tools to match your new photos to other photos you’re tagged in. Similar photos are grouped together and, whenever possible, Facebook suggests the name(s) your friend(s) in the photos. In other words, the square that magically finds faces in a photo now suggests names of your Facebook friends to streamline the tagging process, especially with the same friends in multiple uploaded photos.

When the new feature was introduced in the US, Facebook pointed out that users could disable it in their Privacy Settings. When the technology started being pushed out internationally this week, the social networking giant didn’t feel the need to warn its users that it was switched on by default.

Facebook shouldn’t require you to constantly check your Privacy Settings to see what the company has changed since your last visit to the site. Security firm Sophos agrees and finds the move worrying.

“Unfortunately, once again, Facebook seems to be sharing personal information by default,” a Sophos spokesperson said in a statement. “Many people feel distinctly uncomfortable about a site like Facebook learning what they look like, and using that information without their permission. Most Facebook users still don’t know how to set their privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing. It’s even harder though to keep control when Facebook changes the settings without your knowledge.”

To opt out of this feature, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Privacy Settings on Facebook.
  2. Click on Customise settings at the bottom.
  3. Under “Things others share” you should see an option titled “Suggest photos of me to friends. When photos look like me, suggest my name.” Click on Edit Settings.
  4. Change the option from Enabled to Disabled.
  5. Click OK.

If at step three you do not see an Edit Settings option, you will likely see “This is not yet available to you.” At this point, you’ll have to wait before Facebook rolls out the feature to your account before you can change your Privacy Settings for this feature.

As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained last month, Facebook users eventually get over privacy anxiety. This is just how the company works: enable a feature by default and gauge the response.

While users are skeptical of new changes at first, they tend to change their minds over time. Users eventually realize that the feature or change is actually useful as they begin to use it, plus Facebook tweaks and fixes issues as users complain about certain aspects of the feature.

I have contacted Facebook about this change and will update this post if I hear back.

Update: “We launched Tag Suggestions to help people add tags of their friends in photos; something that’s currently done more than 100 million times a day,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “Tag Suggestions are only made to people when they add new photos to the site, and only friends are suggested. If for any reason someone doesn’t want their name to be suggested, they can disable the feature in their Privacy Settings. When we announced this feature last December, we explained that we would test it, listen to feedback and iterate before rolling it out more broadly. We should have been more clear with people during the roll-out process when this became available to them. Tag Suggestions are now available in most countries and we’ll post further updates to our blog over time.”

I'm tellin ya, no limit to the depths of depravity over there. What do you expect, concentrating the chewy center of human nature like that?

Anyone else here "like" the kitten toss... ?
Now we know how Facebook ensures they are not banned by foreign governments. They just collude with whatever security apparatus is in place, and turn every amatuer photographer into a highly auotmated agent for Big Brother.

What if someone had a photo from an accident site and was able to identify a doctor in the crowd that didn't help? A stretch but it will happen. This is like walking around with your name on a banner over your head. Nobody would do that.

Even the privacy UI has a variety of checkboxes and "Edit settings" buttons and dropdowns that make the user dizzy. I guess that is one way of discouraging users from knowing and, heaven forbid, changing the settings from what Facebook wants.

Retinal Scans and fingerprinting. As usual there will be some whiny babies at first, but everyone will soon come to accept it as part of their everyday social networking routine.
At times I suddenly realize I'm just happy i don't have a Facebook profile... just plain happy.. and i don't miss it...

What is just as interesting is that the govt just sits there and does nothing. So much for your govt working for you. What year is it? Oh ya... the Medieval Ages.
