Facebook to remove Discussions tab from Pages

By | October 2, 2011, 12:00pm PDT

Summary: Facebook will be removing the Discussion Boards app from all Facebook Pages on October 31, 2011. The company wants everyone to just use the Wall.

Update: Facebook kills Discussions and Reviews tabs on Pages

Facebook recently started notifying Page administrators that it will be removing the Discussions tab from all Pages on October 31, 2011. The Discussion app, also known as Discussion Boards, allows Pages to host a basic forum.

Apparently, Facebook prefers that everyone just use the Wall, according to a screenshot (above) obtained by KarthikK. I’ve transcribed it for you here:

We’re Making Pages Better

We want to make sure the tools you use to manage your page are as effective as possible. Here are some updates about how you connection with your audience:

  • Discussions: The Best way to encourage conversation and feedback is through posts and comments on your wall. To focus on this we’ll be removing the Discussions app on October 31st. Learn more

The “Learn more” link sends you to the Facebook Help Center question “What happened to the Reviews and Discussions tabs on my Facebook Page?” Here’s the answer, which confirms Page administrators can no longer install the app:

We’ve found that the best way to encourage conversation and feedback is through posts and comments on your Wall. We’ve removed these tabs for now as we work on tools to help you moderate and filter content. Our goal is to help you can manage everything from one powerful place. Stay tuned.

On place pages with a location, fans can still write a recommendation for their friends or others from the right-column that says Recommendations.

Facebook rolled out the Discussion Boards app alongside Pages years ago. It was mainly meant to facilitate longer-form discussions about different topics on a given Page. At its peak in December 2010, the app had as many as 55 million monthly active users, according to App Data. Now this number is at some 22 million active users.

The social networking giant has obviously noticed the decline and has decided to take action. Having all discussions limited a Page’s wall will mean much more confusion, although possibility more visibility.

I would bet that the Discussions tab is not picked up by the newly launched Ticker and the upcoming Timeline and Open Graph rollout. Walls on Pages are, however, and so Facebook has decided to just kill Discussions instead of updating the app so that it works with other updates to the service.

On the other hand, Facebook’s plan to delete old conversations could anger some users and Page administrators, especially if they had important conversations on it. Furthermore, Facebook doesn’t seem to be planning to offer a way to export content from the app before it’s killed.

Are they getting rid of the Review Tab aswell? people keep telling me they are
It appears that Facebook is just becoming an ad venue instead of a venue for the exchange of information from person to person or from a business to a potential client.

The removal of discussions kills the chance for anyone to get a point across without the "wall" text limitations. It's hard to get a point across when you cant finish your explanation. I also find that these "changes" are actually limiting the reach for facebook users, confining people to select approved groups, or most frequently contacted people.

The changes are starting to become annoying instead of helpful.
@jzuk I totally agree with you. I am really upset about this proposed change I hope we can create a groundswell to stop it. The discussions and reviews apps actually give some longevity to a facebook post.

@jzuk yes this is why they will be surpassed by Google Plus.

Facebook Games Cheats
Facebook is doing more and more to drive me away from using it. The new format is dreadful and I resent being told what posts *I* would like to read. I thought that I was finished with that when I left school/uni!!! As a social network it is more and more going down the pan. Whereas wall post are good and useful, if you see someone on line and a though pops into your head you can correspond there and then and get your answer and not have to wait for them to trawl through a load of garbage before they see you!! I think I will stick to Twitter and Yahoo from now on!!
Removing these two applications is crazy. They are the best ways to keep information in one place. The wall is great but within a few days the info is pushed down and lost for all but the extremely curious to find. I spent a lot of time and money getting people to post reviews of my products on the reviews app. I am really upset about this.
Seems like Facebook is rolling im the money and wants to make alot of cuts. Why don't we all just find a different place to go and leave Facebook. They keep making all these chages and removing every thing, so what are we going to have left?

This is really a disappointing move by Facebook. The Discussions tab is a useful tool for businesses to ensure some sustainability on their pages. What will replace this?
We do fundraising for a non-profit organization on their Facebook site. We present our events on the Discussion Board and NOT on the wall for specific reasons including having all participants posting in one place in the event presentation and also to keep it off the Wall out of respect for the fans who are unable to financially participate. Facebook has basically put us out of business. After raising thousands of dollars for this organization in this medium, it is a sad shame that Facebook does not take ALL into consideration when making their illogical changes.
I wrote them and told them they are in no position to decide what is the "best" way for us to disseminate information and discuss a topic. Doubt it will do any good, however.
the move has both advantages and disadvantages. for one, i have seen lots of discussion pages on facebook that is used by spammers to promote certain sites and they write thousands of words that no one can't understand and fills it with hundreds of links. SEO practitioners will surely approve of the removal of the discussion pages.

As a page administrator who relies on having a discussion board, I am disappointed to see this change. I run a book club and post our books for each month in that section so people don't have to scroll through the wall just to find out what book we are reading. Not to mention we have actual discussion questions posted in there for people to have a constant discussion. I know many other pages who rely on the discussion board for more important topics as well so their users aren't constantly searching the wall for answers to their questions. I think Facebook is going to get some definite backlash from this change. I'm not sure I understand why they have to remove something that shouldn't take up that much "space" on a page anyway?

That will be pretty much do it for me and Facebook.
The Wall does not work for ongoing discussions..and the discussions on FB is pretty much the majority of what interests me on FB in the first place..
Otherwise I may check in every month or 2..
Bye bye FB..
I don't want a whole feed-stream of discussions on my wall - what a mess! Surely this isn't really going to happen, or I'm misunderstanding? I've accepted the other changes, some I like, some I just live with. Although I considered changing to Google + for networking, I figured they are going to have things I like and don't like too... Does anyone use G+ and know if they have db? I keep seeing more and more people promoting G+ and saying they are switching over, but I still like fb for the most part and would prefer it (I think)

Please don't remove discussion boards

I still have the discussion tab on my page - where there are many exisiting discussions. However, on another page where there are none the tab has been removed. Does anyone know if Facebook are keeping the discussion tab on pages with many discussions?
Well its removed now. Time to move my facebook page away from facebook.

I'm late to the party here....agree that it's disappointing fb removed the discussion application - I found a workaround forum app (see link, then Forum https://www.facebook.com/Insight.Genesis.Network) - but it requires info share and injects ads into the experience - anyone know of an alternative ad-free discussion/forum solution for business pages?! I don't want members of my business network having to share their info and being exposed to ads. Cheers and happy new year! Adam.
